“The Worst Experience Ever”
Reviewed 7 April 2013

I agree with everyone that the lava flow into the ocean is AMAZING. Just do it with another carrier. Lava Roy is horrible, inconsiderate, and a miserable person to be around. My husband was concerned about saying anything on the boat for Roy was not stable. Don't go out with his ship.

“THE best way to experience lava flow!”
Reviewed 15 March 2013

When we headed to The Big Island it was all about seeing the lava. Sadly, we learned from the park ranger in Volcano National Forest to do so you had to hike in over ten miles, take a helicopter or go by boat. Since we were all about the lava we opted to take the boat at night, as recommended by the hotel staff where we stayed. One word:WOW! My husband and I travel a lot and this was in our top ten things in our life so far, (including Rome Attractions, Disney, etc). What we loved about Lava Roy's is that it's locally owned, they only take a small amount of people at a time, the boat alone is run to ride on, and you are so close to the lava you can feel the heat, hear it pop and hit the water, and will exceed your expectations! Be sure to make a reservation in advance, as tour had a waiting list when we went...we were lucky enough to be flexible on dates.

“Awesome lava experience”
Reviewed 14 March 2013

I was slightly afraid of what to expect considering some of the reviews, and indeed, Roy had misplaced our reservation... but the matter was swiftly resolved and he proved to be a man of his word in accomodating us on board and more. Actually, we got the best spot there is: the bow, all to ourselves with no one to get in your way when you want to get that great shot ! Plus Roy takes you so close to the ocean lava entry that you sail in between steamy floating lava bombs trying to cool down in the water. We got so close I had to use wide angle to take pictures ! In addition, we got to stay well over 30 minutes and had ample time to enjoy all of the three ocean entries. The ride is sometimes rough but hey, this is an ocean and a big one, so be prepared. The boat is otherwise comfy and Roy a true sea pro - no worries there.
All in all a breathtaking experience that is highly recommended. So, if you want to see it close, go for Roy. As for us, if there is a next time, it will be a Roy time.

“Amazing Lava”
Reviewed 22 February 2013

We took this tour to the lava fields on 1-23-2013. The 40 min ride to the fields was a little bit rough but we felt safe with Capt. Roy. The 40 min we spent at the lava fields were absolutely amazing. We were lucky a lot of lava was flowing that night and we had great opportunities for pictures and movies. This was an adventure we won't forget for a long time.

“Lava Lava & More Lava”
Reviewed 22 January 2013

This tour is not for the faint of heart. I call this an extreme adventure but no risk, no reward and the reward is INCREDIBLE. A rigid inflatable twin engine boat that takes only 6 guests. We lucked out on a fabulous overcast ocean afternoon with pretty calm seas. The 40 min. boat ride is exciting with some education along the way with Capt Roy showing us lava tubes in the cliffs and explaining how they are formed. You anticipate what you expect to see with the glow as you approach but once you round the cliffs the lava flowing is utterly amazing. Capt Roy gadges the winds to ensure you don't get a nose full of sulpher gas but gets safely close enough to feel the heat. It is magical. The other boat company an aluminum cat, seemed (to me) to get way to close. This is extreme enough but I felt very safe wth Captian Roy. I would advise folks to spend the night on the other side (as my husband and I did). It's a long drive back in the dark to the west side. The location where the boat leavs is remote but beautiful too and you can meet some unique characters at the park before you go. This really gives you a sense of the island. The ride back is another 40 min. in the dark but the talk or quiet all the way back is thinking about amazing mother nature and how lucky you were to see it! We got lucky, the seas change rapidly along with wind so ask Captain Roy the conditions before you venture out. He will be honest with you and won't go if it is not safe, but safe to him may be different that what you believe is safe. Remember, each person has to weigh risk/reward!
