“Your Very Own Place in Paradise”
Reviewed 12 June 2012

What an amazing place! You are literally ON THE BEACH, steps away from submerging yourself in the pristine, healing waters of Hawaii. There are only four, stand-alone cottages so there is much privacy and seclusion if you so desire. But that comes at a price...there ARE only four cottages... so you have to book early to make sure you secure one of these gems. They are designed in the "old plantation style", but with a modern flair and all the amenities you would need.

The floor plan of the cottages are spacious and flowing, making it very comfortable for beach living. There is air conditioning for those who prefer "cold", but you are in Hawaii after all so enjoy the ocean breezes and fresh air! The beds are comfortable and large, with an added day bed in the living area for added guests.

There is a kitchenette complete with microwave, sink, refrigerator, coffee maker (with 100% kona coffee provided), and its fully stocked with dishes, utensils and a dining table for those sunrise breakfasts. Within a short walk is a market in the Queen's shops to stock up on your favorite pupus and cocktails for that oh-so-perfect sunset celebration (which we did !).

The outdoor lava rock showers are incredible! Imagine yourself in your own private tropical rain shower, lathering up with the coconut bath amenities provided for you. True paradise! There are also very spacious and luxurious bathrooms and showers inside for those who are more modest, yet either option are large enough for two. :)

Sitting on the veranda in these comfy chairs, reading a book, listening to your own tunes via the iPhone compatible speakers in the room, or just taking in the soothing sounds of the ocean, is just a perfect way to unwind after a day of touring the island or just simply waking up in the morning to a cup of 100% Kona coffee from your own kitchen.

We brought stand up paddle boards rented from Hyper Nalu Hawaii in Kona (ask for Ian) and paddled every day up and down the coast with the dolphins, manta rays and green turtles. We also snorkeled and enjoyed the extreme visibility and sea life right in our back yard. There is a ocean sports place up the beach near the Marriott and you are surrounded by world class golf courses as well.

These cottages are adjacent to the Lava Lava Beach Club restaurant (to be opening soon). These are the same folks who own Huggo's, Huggo's on the Rocks, and Paradise Gourmet Catering in Kona so you are assured to have the same excellent food, service and local entertainment.

Don't pass this one up !!! Can't wait until my next visit !

Room Tip: All cottages are pretty much identical with the exception of their proximity to the Lava Lava Beach...

Private outdoor lava rock shower, so many windows that all look out over the ocean, hearing the waves crash at night, waking up in a luxurious bed to the ocean right outside your door- kona coffee on the beach and the ability to just jump in the water anytime, all weekend? What more could we ask for? These houses would be stunning alone, but paired with the location right on the bay? Amazing. Impeccably furnished and supplied with everything you could need- with staff nearby to help with anything you could want. We paddle boarded and snorkeled right in front of the house. By the end of the weekend we lost count of how many people stopped to stare (drool?) at the houses or ask us how we managed to get a house right on the beach. The front deck was a perfect shady spot to read and doze off in the afternoon after swimming all morning. We loved the big open plan of the house. It felt comfortable from the second we walked in the door. Especially loved trying to play the ukelele! We walked south along the water one evening and within minutes from leaving our deck we were on deserted, pristine beaches with giant sea turtles- it felt like a private island. The restaurant next door wasn't open yet but it looked almost ready with all the activity. This is a special place, can't wait until a return trip!

Room Tip: Our house? cottage? was 100% wheelchair accessible. All of the cottages have the same amazing views...

We were one of the first lucky guests to check in at the brand new Lava Lava Beach Club on Hawaii Islands "Gold Coast" (the spectacular Kohala coast on the island's west side) this week. In a word? FABULOUS. With only 4 beach cottages (hales in Hawaiian) our only concern is booking our next stay...this place unlike anything else we've experienced in the Hawaiian Islands. Think St. Tropez beach clubs, St. Barts boutique getaways set right on the beach. Set on 10 pristine beachfront acres, the chic resort includes a restaurant and bar, "living room" lounge ares on the beach and a number of event venues for small gatherings to huge celebrations. Now through about mid-June, they're offering special rates on the hales since their restaurant isn't open yet (the say they're targeting an early to mid-June opening for the open air eatery). With the nicely outfitted mini-kitchen in our hale (all 4 have them) we didn't mind not eating out...we didn't want to leave once we checked in! We provisioned before check-in at the nearby Queen's Market Place gourmet grocery store (the sushi and bento boxes from the in-store Sushi Shiono --they have a restaurant in Kailua-Kona -- are absolutely stellar and lots of other prepared salads and meats from the great deli there). The store also has a great selection of wines, beers and spirits. After 2 nights and 3 days of bliss, we can't wait to go back! Note: Just a short walk down the beach is an active ocean sports center -- everything from kite surfing equipment and instruction to stand up paddling, kayaking and outrigger canoe paddling. In the meantime, your nearest neighbors are the green sea turtles (honu in Hawaiian) resting on the beach!

Room Tip: We loved the privacy of the Wa'a Hale, it's the furthest south along A-Bay beach.
