Owner description: Since 1999, Doug and Sandy McMaster have been presenting authentic, award winning traditional Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukulele concerts. Fridays 4pm and Sundays 3pm at the Hanalei Community Center. Concerts are also now offered in Princeville at the Princeville Community Center (4334 Emmalani Rd. 6pm Saturdays) and at All Saints' Church (Kapaa 6pm Wednesdays). Their 2000th concert will be held the first week of April 2017. They've been voted Best Live Show by Hawaii Magazine Readers several times. They're a key attraction and an excellent way for visitors to experience the beautiful family music tradition of Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukulele while learning its history, cultural significance, and inspirations behind the songs. Their mission is to ho'omau (continue the tradition) as directed by Raymond and Elodia Kane (Oahu) and Keli'i Mawae (Molokai). The soothing sounds of traditional slack key music relax the audience into 'Hawaii time' bringing peace and Aloha to heart and soul. Concerts are one of the most affordable things to do on Kauai and appeal to both the individual visitor as well as to groups or families. The venues are family friendly and accessible.

“If you love Hawaiian music and lore it's a must see”
Reviewed 7 October 2013 via mobile

My wife and I have been coming to the slack key concerts for over 12 years and never tire of them. Doug and Sandy McMasters play a style of music that goes back to old Hawaii that you won't hear in the hotels or at luaus. Sandy explains the origins of the music. Doug is a master of the guitar and one of the last people to play this type of music in the authentic old style passed down in families for generations. They have a wonderful repartee. If you go once I'm sure you will want to return again and again, just as I have.

“Wonderful Show”
Reviewed 29 September 2013 via mobile

What a great time we had at Doug and Sandy's concert. Doug is an amazing talent. The music was peaceful and relaxing, and the perfect soundtrack for the rugged mountains of Kauai and calm Hanalei beach. It was very low key and casual event, which is fine with me. There was around 40 or so people there, so arrive early to get a good seat and to find the venue since the community center can be easy to miss when driving the main highway through town. If you come to the green church you have gone to far.

I did not know anything about slack key guitar before, but now I feel that I can appreciate the music more. Makes me want to try the ukulele. I hope to find more shows around the islands or back home (and want to see them again).

“Fantastic...wonderful music and stories!”
Reviewed 15 September 2013

Doug and Sandy have a special relationship that shows through their stories and the music Doug and Sandy play ...new songs and ones that honour the history of Hawaii and slack key! Set in such a lovely community center ...truly relaxing ...the spirit of aloha lives on! They ran out of sitting room when we were there...so many are returnees!

“This music will help you get into "Kauai time"”
Reviewed 2 September 2013

Learn about slack key guitar, and the history of slack key guitar, and listen to some great and authentic music. My wife and I both enjoyed the concert, and we bought a CD to take back to our rental cottage.
This music will help you enjoy Kauai. Highly recommended.
Added bonus: no blowhards downing their third and fourth mai tais and pina colodas at the concert.
Thank you Doug and Sandy.
