My husband and I decided to go to Kauai after reading the reviews for Surfboard House. We are from the East Coast, so flying to Hawaii for a 1 week vacation is a lot of air travel, but being able to stay at the Surfboard House made it all worth it.
After researching Hawaii and deciding that Kauai would be the best island for my husband and I (who are very active and are NOT resort people), I decided that staying on the North Shore would be the best of the best. I booked the Surfboard house months before I even bought our airline tickets. Pretty much as soon as I found it I emailed Simon to get our week long reservation for the end of September.
We arrived on Kauai at 8:00 p.m. on a Thursday. We rented a car and drove for about an hour, wondering what we were missing in the darkness! We found the Surfboard House without a problem. When we arrived there was a parking spot for us and a sign pointing us to our room. The Elvis Suite was perfect, just like everyone has said. Simon has the best taste in Hawaiana, with some of the coolest vintage pieces I've ever seen (especially the wood carved United Airlines relief map on the wall in the bathroom!). Both my husband and I were thrilled with the room. It's large, comfortable, and just like everyone said, very well appointed!
If you're looking for a vacation where you can lazily wake up in the morning and decide what you want to do for the day, this is it. We didn't stress out about fitting everything in. One day I ran up the highway for the most beautiful 5 mile run I've ever done - morning in Hanalei is stunning. While we were adjusting to the time change, we even made it up for a sunrise in the bay.
We were able to save money on food by shopping at the farmer's market and grocery stores, having coffee in bed (via french press, no less!), and having fresh fruit smoothies every morning, and fixing cocktails at "home". We even cooked in a couple of times on the grill on the lanai. It's how I would live everyday if I could!
Simon was a great host - very hospitable! Yet this isn't a typical bed and breakfast type stay. My husband really isn't a people person (especially on vacation), so having our own private entrance made it feel like we were staying in a guest house, not a room in someone's house. I REALLY wanted to see inside the airstream that's parked on the property, but that time never arose... but ask Simon about his time travelling in it across the US!
Simon has it all figured out. I've now figured out what I want to be when I grow up - a groovy ex-record exec with a passion for gardening and yoga and a guest house on Kauai!!
One last note - I'm late writing this review, but what prompted me to write it today is that I finally got around to ordering from the Kauai Kunana Dairy. Simon had the dairy's whey hair conditioner in the room, and while I couldn't find it during our stay, they do ship! I can't wait for it to arrive!
