“A very laid back relaxing time! Can't go wrong!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2008

My wife and I were looking for a place that was out of the way where we could truely relax. We found it. The atmosphere is just what we were looking for. We were able to relax and leave the stress of the mainland behind us. We stayed there 12 days and wished we could have stayed longer.

This location is tops!. It is less than a block from the best beach on Kauai. We could walk to town for dinner each night if we wanted. Some days we didn't even need to use the car! The best parts of Kauai are really close. Once you visit the busy parts of the island you will be glad you stayed in Hanalei. Hanalei is small, but has enough resteraunts to meet most everyones needs.

The accomidations were just right. The room was very clean and with everything we needed. It doesn't have the big hotel extras, but it makes up for that in charm and quiet suroundings. The only thing to disturb you are the morning birds which are like nothing I have ever seen or heard before . There come little things which also make a big difference: snorkls & masks, boogie board, beach mats & towels, iPod dock, Bose radio, cable and WiFi.

The owner was very helpful and just a very down to earth nice guy. He will help you in any way he can and is full of fasinating stories. Be sure to check out the Slack Key Guitar Fridays and Sundays at the Community Center as well as the fantastic Farmers Market there on Saturday mornings.

We had such a great time here we are recommending it to all of our family and friends without hesitation. You can't go wrong at the Hanalei Surfboard House. This is one place I would absolutely go back to. We can't wait to return.

  • Liked — The quiet location and atmosphere.
  • Disliked — Had to leave! Seriously, a little far from rest of island attractions, but not a big negative.

The Hanalei Surfboard House is a delightful house a half-block from a beautiful beach and a short distance from some good hiking. The small town center of Hanalei, with restaurants and shops, is a brief walk away. Our room (one of three) was the Elvis Room, decorated with Elvis mementos. It has a sitting area, a good-sized bathroom, sink, refrigerator, stove, and a space out back with a table and a barbecue. The atmosphere of the house is relaxed, and Simon, the owner, is an excellent host. It was from him we learned that one must pronounce all of the vowels in the Hawaiian names, which 1. makes life easier and 2. makes it easier to distinguish different places in one's mind.

The room has a number of great amenities for those times when it is just too rainy (and that takes a lot, given the location) to enjoy the outdoors: a Bose I-pod dock, wave radio, satellite TV with as many channels as one could possibly sort through, and a wireless internet connection to provide one's own amusement. The reading material is terrific (I enjoyed the history of Elvis in Hawaii and the book of recipes of mid-20th century Polynesian restaurants), and there were many CDs and DVDs, well chosen.

Highly recommended.

I absolutely loved The Hanalei Surfboard House. I have stayed in many places on the north shore of Kauai, and none have even come close to the charismatic suites at the surfboard house. The host was very friendly and extremely accommodating. If you want to stay somewhere with lots of character and luxurious amenities, you have to stay here.

We recently returned from a vacation to Hawaii. we spent 5 Nights on Kauai, and stayed at the Hanalei Surfboard House. We read about it in Frommers and they were right, it was a great place to stay. We rented the Cowgirl Suite, and it had every thing we needed and more. The bed was super comfortable, the bath towels were hugh. You have a washer and dryer, which was great for us, because we did not want to carry a lot of luggage. You have your own outside patio, with a grill if you want. The bathroom with the large shower was nice. It was located on a nice quiet street, and our host Simon Potts, was great, He can direct you to restaurants, hikes and tour companies. If your into music he has lots, since he is retired from Capital Records. Check out his web site.
