Our stay in Hanalei was wonderful. We chose a small venue (vs a large hotel) because it always feels more comfortable to us, rather than being warehoused. Simon's house was indeed everything we had hoped for! It was very casual, comfortable, and intriguing! The room felt like home with all the kitchen and bath amenities, a nice large bed, and 3 seating areas - 1 inside and 2 outside. The back area was very private and had a BBQ. The grounds (remember this was only a single family home converted to the Owner's place upstairs, and 3 very comfortably-sized units downstairs) were simply delightful! There was a large variety of exotic (and rare) plants and garden art, all intertwined to create a very photographable and leisurely area. And, only a short block's walk to the beach! Simon was very hospitable and overall we had a perfect time!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Cowgirl room and there were two others we did not see, but presume the quality was...

Simon has crafted a wonderful property mixing funky eclecticism with a real sense of comfort and beauty. It somehow feels like a perfect extension of Hanalei. This is the kind of place where we felt right at home. It's like having a garden apartment just a block from the beach, appointed with private patios, places to rinse and dry your stuff without feeling like slob. The kitchenette is fully featured, if you include the fancy grill on the back patio. We made breakfast in the room. Ambitious cooking might have been a little trickier. Maybe with few more days we would have made a dinner, but there are quite few options to eat just blocks away.

What a wonderful experience! Simon is a terrific host and has thought of everything you might need during your stay. The suite is very roomy, much larger than it shows on the photos. Very convenient location. Close to all the north shore beaches! The gardens are beautiful and show how much Simon cares about his property. Can't wait to come back!

If you want to authentically experience Hanalei Bay, this is the best place to stay. You are a minute from the beach, can walk into town and have your own private hideaway. We stayed in the Elvis room and enjoyed the privacy and character of the room. Simon is a great host. He is very engaging, provides local knowledge and appears right when you need him. It is the kind of place that you want to stay and experience instead of zipping around all day just to land back at the room at night. We really enjoyed grilling out and enjoyed eating on the patio. If you are trying to determine whether to stay at the Surfboard House or at the resorts of Princeville, we recommend here. We still had golf and a mai tai at the St. Regis and were able to leave the cookie cutter resort feeling and head back to a peaceful unique setting.

Room Tip: Both the Elvis room and Cowgirl room are the same.

Excellent hotel, fantastic location (near beach & town), wonderful staff. The room decoration is music funky (lots of memorabilia like gold records) and the property landscaping quite eclectic (surfboards & bowling balls among tropical landscaping). Our kind of lodging. We'll definitely go back for a longer stay.

Room Tip: Ask for the "Love Shack"

We just came back from our trip to Kauai, we spent few nights in the Love Shack, and just no words for such an amazing place... every single detail make the surfboard House an excellent place that you can not miss out. At my first contact with Simon I had good experience and made me feel that I have to go and check out this place. I called back to reserve it and I talked to Simon who gave me few tips to enjoy more the Island. His place is just WONDERFUL.... I love each room and of course our Love Shack as well... His House and his hospitality was incredible... THANK YOU very much Simon for the Sapote and the lovely fruits and avocado we enjoyed everything till last minute, and look forward to go back soon!!! Your Venezuelan and Colombian Friend!!! THANK YOU!!!!

We spent three weeks travelling in Hawaii during January. Staying at the Hanalei Surfboard House in the Love Shack was the highlight of our holiday. Now that we are back home we are still thinking about how truly amazing our experience was. Simon the owner was fabulous at helping us with information on where to go for dinner and things to do in the local area. The accommodation was fantastic, the layout perfect, the detail in the decorating was so interesting, Simon had everything covered for a traveller to this part of the world. The proximity to the beach was great, and being able to walk into town and go out to dinner or shopping was a bonus. We just loved the fabulous feel to the place and this lovely town.
