“Chill to Elvis, the surf and strains of Bali Hai”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2009

Loved staying at this fantastic beach house on the north coast of Kauai in Hanalei. Stayed in the Elvis room, complete with an incredible bed and other props from Elvis films.
The whole house is great and I'd love to stay in the front separate house one day. Simon, who runs the house, is a great help with everything, and seems to love life in Hanalei. I mean, who wouldn't?
Steps (yes, really) from the beach, and depending on the time of year, it can be a brilliant beach to learn to surf on, has access to the Na'pali Coast, snorkeling, camping.

When I researched places to stay on Kauai's North Shore, I found so many positive reviews of the Surfboard House that I was initially suspicious. How can a place be so perfect? In sum; the Surfboard House is perfect. Simon's eclectic cottages have everything one could ever need and ooh, the shower! From fluffy beach towels to iced mugs - we wanted for nothing. Simon is a great host - there when you need him and vanishes when you don't. The Surfboard House is across the street from beautiful Hanalei Beach, you can walk to great restaurants (BarAcuda was our favorite and Hanalei Dolphin a close second), and easily drive to Tunnels for awesome snorkeling or to breathtaking hiking spots (bring plenty of water!).

How to describe this funky guesthouse? Well, there are three suites to choose from and we were in the Elvis Suite, but think cool, early 1960s, vintage Elvis rather than a kitsch, Vegas-like showcase suite. You benefit from a separate entrance and private garden at back and also an assortment of beach games, etc. that can be taken that short walk down to the picture-perfect Hannalei beach. It's also about a 5-10minute walk to the small town centre to pick up any groceries you may need, or check out the local gift shops.

Having stayed in a couple of places around Hannalei Bay, this was by far the best. It felt like home-from-home and being part of the local community, as opposed to these resorts. Early morning swims, the sunsets and the convenient location to access the NaPali Coast, Tunnels Beach all made this accommodation so perfect for us.

We look forward to returning to the paradise of Kauai and will definitely be hoping to find there is some availability at this beautiful guesthouse again. Highly recommended.

Simon's place is so charming, peaceful and relaxing. And I am a very picky traveler! The location is terrific and I loved the decor and all the amenities. He has thought of everything. It was so great to just have everything we needed/wanted - even an electric tea kettle and boogie boards! And so much fun to try out the vast variety of music he has available in the room. I will definitely be back again and again. Love Hanalei and Love the Surfboard House!

If you stay at Simon's place you will love it. No need to travel much cause Hanalei Beach is right around the corner for relaxing and water fun. Simon provides you with bodyboards, towels, beach chairs... We want to come back again some time!

I returned to the Surfboard House having dreamt of it often since my first visit a year ago. This time I stayed in the "Elvis Room" and loved it, previously I had stayed in the marvellous "Love Shack". Lovingly decorated with fabulous detail, the room is an homage to Elvis's movie "Blue Hawaii", including the orginal bedstead from the set. The bed was comfy, the amenities great, I loved the bathroom and amazing shower. Simon the owner provides all the essentials for making the most of wonderous Hanalei Beach - seconds away - chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards etc.A couple of days it rained, not a problem as the room was stocked with cool DVDs and great music. Location is amazing, everything on your doorstep. My favourite coffee shop in the world Java Kai, is a short stroll, give my love to Mark and the girls if you go.
Thanks again to owner Simon for creating this unique oasis in paradise. I'm already planning my 3rd visit!!

If you are looking to stay in Hanalei you obviously know how unique and beautiful Kauai is. For our honeymoon we chose the Love Shack as our reward after 3 nights on the Kalalau trail, and it was spectacular! The unique touches and Simon's own handiwork (the bathroom tile and shower were particularly impressive), not to mention the more than ample kitchen and theatre setup (including a great collection of music) - it was really an unparalleled experience. Little touches that you would expect in a home but never get in a hotel (like a blender and weber grill); it really feels like we are now part of a club.
After a few months of reflection, after seeing the entire Kalalau trail, camping 3 nights in Waimea Canyon, hiking the Awawapuhi/Nu'alolo, the Alakai Swamp trail to the lookout, the NaPali coast kayak tour, and staying in a beautiful brand new hotel in Poipu, this was the absolute highlight for both of us.
