We had a great time browsing the shelves. We found a couple of "gems" we couldn't leave behind. We were surprised by the wide selection.

Talk Story is a must-see if you are a book lover. Even if you're not, you should go. Ed and Cynthia Justus run the store, and talking to them is worth the visit. The place is crammed with so many different kinds of books that it is almost guaranteed that you'll find something you love (and the staff can simply point you in the right direction is you have a vague idea). It's also a wonderful atmosphere; we were there on a Friday, which is a street festival for the arts every Friday night. Vendors, food (amazing butter-crust pies), music, paintings...and it feels as if you just happened upon this lovely community festival -- very low-tech and down-to-earth, and you can always find someone to talk to. But check out Talk Story first...it's one in a million.

Small, independently owned bookstore with great personnel. They had an incredible selection of books of all sorts, history, novels, and my favorite all things Hawaiian. They had better prices than I have seen for the same books on Amazon, and knowledgeable staff to help. The bookstores are becoming a thing of the past on the island, but this was a real treat to find. There was something for everyone in our group (my elderly mom, husband and teen daughter.)

Let's say you came all the way to Kauai and realized you forgot to bring that current bestseller you wanted to start reading. Chances are they have it at the Talk Story Bookstore. But you probably won't leave with just that one book. At least we didn't.

The store is owned by Cynthia and Ed, who both assisted us during our visit. Once you've passed through the front door and into their domain, you'll hear one of them greet you with "Welcome to the Western-Most Bookstore in the United States." Their book selection is incredible. Somehow they managed to cram 70,000 or so books into that store. Fortunately they know what they have and are able to guide you right to what you are looking for, or make recommendations.

We could easily have spent hours there, but instead only had time to browse a few sections, including sci-fi, which was a goldmine. It is rare that I come across titles I haven't seen before, but I did at Talk Story.

They are also one of the few retail outlets for a local spice merchant who puts together interesting blends.

I've been to a lot of bookstores, and I can't recall any that are better than Talk Story. This is where bibliophiles should hang-out after they are done with the surf and sand. 5 stars all the way...Worth a special trip.

Hanapepe is a small town close to the south-west coast of Kauai. If you like books, don't miss the marvellous used bookstore on the main street. Owner Cynthia is happy to advise, look up a review or just let you browse. It may be hours before you leave! In the cyber age it's great to find a hidden gem like this.
