A local restaurant owner told us about Waipouli today and said this is a restaurant that has been around for decades and is frequented only by locals because it has the best home cooking on the island. So of course we had to try it especially when the recommendation was to try the loco moco which I had not tried anywhere yet. And yes it was totally unhealthy and delicious and satisfied my craving for plate lunch. Basically Waipouli has the feel of a inexpensive chinese food restaurant complete with cheesy crooked artwork on the walls but the service is good and the food tastes great. I can't speak to the quality of the ingredients but the loco moco tasted great. I would recommend coming here for lunch ($5.99 for the small rice bowls which are far from small and enough for two people) and find a nicer restaurant for dinner. This is a dine in or take out restaurant so you can get your meals to go in a styro container in 5 minutes.

We were very lucky to come across this terrific hole in the wall (which, according to the sign at the restaurant, has been around since 1977).

The home cooked comfort food here was absolutely delicious and deeply gratifying. We really enjoyed the loco moco and the oxtail soup.

The customer service was just superb. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful.

The price was quite reasonable. Our bill averaged out to around $12 per person.

This is a family run restaurant that prepares food the exact way you would get it if you visited a locals home. We visit this restaurant at least once every year when we visit Kauai. There's nothing fancy here and the wait staff and cooks are family and friends... The saiman soup and loco moco are our favorites but there's more local food... Just don't expect ritzy presentations or skimpy portions ... Just right and the prices are too. I've always been taught to go to restaurants where the locals go ... This is the place.

We read a review that the restaurant had declined but still worth the trip. We ordered the tempura shrimp with Steak. The waitress reccommended we order the one with chicken fried steak, what a mistake that was. It seemed since we had lunch at 2 pm we got the leftovers from the lunch crowd. The tempura was a little stale, steak was over cooked and chicken was tasteless. The rice was ok but its hard to fowl up white rice. I will not come back no matter how much food they put on the plate.

There's a reason they've been in business since 1973. If you don't have friends in Kauai that invite you over for a home cooked meal...go here and experience what a home cooked meal is like. Nothing fancy, just good food. You probably won't see many tourists eating here, just locals. And that my friend is a sign of good food.
