The macadamia pancake was large, well done as requested, full of nuts, and delicious. The MahiMahi with Eggs dish was superb and the fish portion generous -- perhaps a tiny bit too well done but really tasty. Service was just fine. The quality of the food makes their prices a bargain.

This restaurant is located in the Kapa's Waipouli shopping center where Foodland is the "anchor tenant." It is a simple store-front establishment with the eating area divided into tables for 4-6 section and smaller both sized tables for 2 to 4 people.

Note: This place has the words "Home Cooking" really big out front so we thought that was what it was called. Don't be confused, it's the same place. :)

We were tired from a long plane ride when we arrived in Kauai & had to leave our hotel to grab some necessities from some type of drugstore or something. We noticed a little hole in the wall type place in the strip mall of the drugstore & decided to google it to see if it was good. It was super highly recommended... but we had to triple check because it seemed like such a little unassuming place couldn't possibly be so good. We were wrong!

We ordered the Oriental Plate, and my family (6 adults) all ordered various items. My mother in law had the steak & mushrooms which looked great if you are a mushroom fan. Our sampler plate was a great introduction to Hawaii & the food of their culture.

The people who worked here were super nice. They don't have alcohol and they don't take cards, so be prepared. But if you're looking for a yummy, home cooked meal, look no further!! :)

After arriving to the island of Kauai, we asked one of the guys parking cars at our hotel where the "locals" eat. We told him we wanted something was and not too fancy or expensive. He recommended the Waipouli Family Restaurant and off we went. The restaurant is fairly dated and is by no means anything fancy, but we were greeted so warmly by all the staff that it felt like we had walked into our grandma's house. We ended up ordering one if the special plates that had a variety of items and split it between us. It was all home-cooked and tasted very good. The young man waiting on us was very respectful and friendly and we decided to leave him a fairly healthy tip just for fun. We told him we would be back, and he said with a big smile, "We'll be here all week!"
We did return the following evening with two other couples and were greeted and treated the exact same way. We would recommend this place to anyone looking for a true "local" feel to their dining experience.

Simply the best I have ever had!

All restaurants in Hawaii are pricey.

Just a little hole in the wall place.

A local restaurant owner told us about Waipouli today and said this is a restaurant that has been around for decades and is frequented only by locals because it has the best home cooking on the island. So of course we had to try it especially when the recommendation was to try the loco moco which I had not tried anywhere yet. And yes it was totally unhealthy and delicious and satisfied my craving for plate lunch. Basically Waipouli has the feel of a inexpensive chinese food restaurant complete with cheesy crooked artwork on the walls but the service is good and the food tastes great. I can't speak to the quality of the ingredients but the loco moco tasted great. I would recommend coming here for lunch ($5.99 for the small rice bowls which are far from small and enough for two people) and find a nicer restaurant for dinner. This is a dine in or take out restaurant so you can get your meals to go in a styro container in 5 minutes.
