“Beautiful!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2014

Waipouli Beach Resort is a condominium community apparently operated by Outrigger. We rented an oceanfront, 2 bedroom, 3 bath condo with a full kitchen and laundry in the condo. The condo has many beautiful furnishings and artwork. There is a whirpool tub in one bath, a shower in another, and a separate tub and shower in the third. All the woodwork is a rich, dark wood, and the appliances are top-notch stainless steel. The condo overlooked the beautiful beach and we had two full size balconies. The place has a huge pool area that includes a lazy river, but strangely no pool rings with which to float down it. You just had to walk through and kind of wave your arms under the water, which was fine, just not what I expected. There were two waterslides and people were having a great time. The only annoying thing was that you had to memorize a complicated code just to get into the pool, then you were supposed to check out towels with the towel station, where they would make sure you were authorized to be there, and then you were rewarded with a mandatory armband allowing you to use the pool. Then you had to do the reverse to give the towel back...way to complicated. There was no vending machines for pop or water on the property, which was annoying, but Safeway is right across the street. The place was generally quiet at night as the rooms seem very well insulated. I quite frankly loved the place and would like it alot if one of owners wanted to give me one!

Room Tip: Pick either building G or A and make sure your room number ends with an even number or you will be f...

We took our girls to Kauai for the first time and choose this condo complex because the units look newly built and the pool had a cool water slide, as well as a 'family hot tub' that had a heated sandy bottom that the kids could enjoy. The on site restaurant was nice and had a great view of the ocean. We loved our unit (H306). It was very clean, the appliances were very nice, the kitchen was well stocked with plastic glasses that could be used at the pool which was helpful. The resort is quite small, but it was nice to be able to hang out by the pool at the end of the day and grill some dinner. The kids really enjoyed the resort. The resort is also centrally located in Kauai.

Room Tip: Building H had nice views of the ocean and pool.

A family of seven (3 adults & 4 kids) stayed in H101 (2 bedroom/ 2.5 bath) for 10 days. Air conditioning was great because it was a bit humid. Everything was in excellent condition. Upright washer and drawer in condo.
H101 is on the first floor and the closest condo to the sand- about 150 feet. Excellent ocean views from every room. We had our own grass area so our kids were able to pass a soccer ball and play. There was a table for 6 outside on our patio that faced the ocean. We had a full kitchen with top of the line stove, oven & refrigerator. Kitchen was stocked with all appliances. Boogie boards/ ice chest and snorkeling equipment were available. Towels were provided. There is NO daily made service. It is an extra price (which I paid) to get the linens changed and condo throughly cleaned halfway though our trip. Starbucks, Food Mart , Safeway, nail shops, restaurants, boutiques were walking distance. Biking path was about a mile away There was a pathway in front of our condo parallel to the beach which was great for running/waling. The beach has lots of rock/ coral and too rocky to body surf or snorkel. The pool is nice and winds around , but has no current. This condo is conveniently located for day trips to other beaches and areas. I highly recommend if you are looking for a CONDO that has a variety of activities available for the kids. It is a VERY safe area for teenagers/kids. I booked thru Kauai calls. Candace was excellent and she was willing to negotiate prices and the contract for us since we were staying for so many days. Check out their website and find your price range.

We just came back from 9 days at the Waipouli Beach Resort and had a fantastic time. There's no question that we would very strongly consider staying here again for our next trip to Kauai. First, let's get the cons (to the extent they could even be considered cons) out of the way:

1. The beach fronting the WBR is not swimmable, although it is pretty. Prior reviews have noted the less than ideal swimming conditions of this beach, which I took with a grain of salt. My kids are all strong swimmers, but even they found the surf to be a bit rough. More significantly, there are a lot of rocks and coral present. It is, however a fine beach for a stroll or to watch the sunrise. Lydgate Beach and Kealia Beach are a 10 minute drive away.

2. The pool is not a lazy river as others have called it because there is no current flowing through it. It’s just a serpentine pool with a small waterfall and two slides. There are a number of jacuzzis, including one open to kids (but which is only lukewarm). We spent an hour one afternoon and part of an evening at the pool to cool off, but, with all of the beaches in Kauai, we did not feel compelled to spend much time there. The pool would be good for young kids.

Onto all of the pros:

1. The property is relatively new and well-appointed. The kitchen fixtures are high-end (in fact, I wish we had these appliances in my own home). We arrived shortly after Julio and Iselle, which we were told contributed to the mugginess, and thus the AC was appreciated.

2. The staff was super-friendly and helpful. Although we booked our stay through VRBO rather than directly from Outrigger, there was no difference in our treatment. The concierge provided us with a lot of information and coupons. We had an issue with the room’s smoke detector in the middle of one night, and security was there immediately. The towel guys at the pool were genuinely friendly and cool.

3. Proximity to Kapaa. The WBR is adjacent to Kapaa, which has a lot of restaurants and small shops similar to Lahaina in Maui. Safeway, Foodland, Starbucks and a number of restaurants are directly across the street. Not a great view if you have a room which overlooks the Kuhio Highway, but just take a walk to the beach. Hard to argue with the convenience.

4. The Kapaa Path. About two blocks north of the WBR (turn right at the Kapaa Shores) is an entry to the Kapaa Path, which fronts the ocean and runs for several miles to the north. Each morning, my oldest son and I would run up past Kapaa and back while watching and hearing the waves roll in. As a runner, it doesn’t get any better for me.

5. Proximity to everything in Kauai! Located on the eastside, the WBR is centrally located on Kauai. On our second day, we drove to the Kalalau lookout at the end of the Waimea Canyon, which would have been a far longer drive had we stayed in the north shore. A short drive from and to the airport. On that note, I think Lihue doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Sure, it’s the commercial/governmental hub and there are no touristy-type attractions (other than the Kauai Museum, which my wife visited), but that’s where you will rub elbows with the locals getting their lunches at Po’s Kitchen or Mark’s Place. More than the vistas and beaches, it’s the locals that I most appreciate about Hawaii. Also, there is a Wal-Mart in Lihue. One can be dismissive about Wal-Mart, but it sure is convenient when one is thousands of miles from home.

We went to Hanalei twice during our stay, which was only about a 35 minute drive (and a pretty one at that). We stayed at the St. Regis in Princeville a number of years ago. While it was quite ritzy and the location very pretty, we felt a bit isolated up there. Similarly, Poipu is about a 35-40 minute drive from the WBR and one route takes you through the Tree Tunnel. Poipu Beach was always crowded (by Kauai standards) when we visited and it’s almost Waikiki-like, if that’s your thing.

6. Decent gym. It’s a stand-alone, air-conditioned, glass-walled building. It’s somewhat small, but has free weights, various machines, treadmills, etc … Never more than one or two other people there at night. You can really work out there – it’s not the forgotten, interior room with a few machines you often get. The TVs are wall-mounted rather than machine-mounted with a headphone jack, so I imagine it can get pretty noisy when competing TVs are on.

7. Easy parking. This may sound trite, but I’ve stayed at places where parking was both limited and confined, which was unwelcomed when unloading a lot of bags and tired kids. No such issues here.

So happy that we decided on the WBR. While I might consider the north shore on my next visit to Kauai (simply for the beaches and greenery), the property and central location of the WBR makes it my presumptive choice.

The Waipouli Beach Resort is by far the nicest resort my family has stayed at on any of the islands. The location is perfect, on the beach and close to shops and lots of activities. We would stay at the resort through lunch, then drive around exploring, and have dinner at one of the many restaurants located around the island. If you prefer to stay close and not drive after arriving, there is so much close by that you could do that too.

The condo units are spacious and well appointed. Ours was a two bedroom, three bathroom with granite countertops, top of the line stainless appliances, very nice furnishings, two separate balconies, and French sliders at the dining room/living room that opened up to the outside. It was so large and nice that we went shopping at the grocery store across the street and stocked up for breakfast and lunches in the room. Breakfast at the table with the sound of the waves crashing in and the sun rising on the horizon was a truly beautiful experience every day.

The facilities were excellent and well maintained. The pool located in the center of the complex has a large patio for sunbathing, water slides for the kids at the center, a lazy river with coves, caves and waterfalls on one side, a sandy little beach on the other, and multiple Jacuzzis spread about. The on-site fitness center has an excellent selection of equipment for pretty much any exercise and multiple TV’s throughout. There is the Oasis Restaurant on site which the menu looked good but we didn’t experience it. However, if everything else at the resort is a good indicator, I’m sure the food was great too.

Overall the resort was excellent. If you have a choice, and want a unit with an almost perfect straight on view of the ocean and sunrise, choose the A or D buildings. Not to say the other buildings don’t have good views, especially from their balconies, but if you’re very particular… Just like other resorts and hotels, some rooms have great ocean views and others don’t.
The only downside, which was minimal for us because we did our daily exploration, is that the ocean in front of the resort has “shelves” of volcanic rock. Not great for swimming or snorkeling, but you can definitely get your feet wet. This is pretty typical of the islands since they are formed from volcanoes, but there are several sandy beaches with good swimming close to the resort. Google Maps in satellite view is a good tool to see this.

I hope you get to stay at Waipuoli Beach Resort – I know you’ll love it.

We aren't condo people when we travel...that said, this place was awesome! Arriving to the property was a bit daunting because you go down long, carpeted hallways to get to the room....we were thinking this was going to be the epitome of our "condo phobia" - Opening the door of the unit we were in for a huge surprise!!! The room was beautiful! Newly renovated, beautiful materials, lovely linens (I ordered the Martha Stuart foam pillows before we left for home), clean, clean, clean!

No geckos in the kitchen! Every detail of the interior was wonderful, someone put a lot of thought into making their guests comfortable.

The grounds are well maintained. The beach is gorgeous, and you can swim in the ocean from there if you are a strong swimmer familiar with the currents. Endangered Monk Seals sunning in the sand...

Great pool area with water slides for the kiddos. Overall a wonderful family environment. The restaurant on site serves really fresh and locally sourced food, although the menu is not changed out daily, and there are not many selections. Both the restaurant and the bar have very reasonable prices considering you are in Hawaii.

My 4 stars are because we were not traveling with a young family, and the environment is a kids paradise...we prefer a more quiet, raw Kauai....Hanalei is our hearts desire.

Room Tip: We had an ocean view room - many of the other rooms have a garden view which we would not have been...

We spent 5 nights in A203 at the beginning of Aug. This is not beach view. The room was huge and included a jack-n-jill bath attached to one of the rooms. I suppose that is what they mean by 3 bathroom (?). Tubs and showers in both 2 bathrooms. We did have a couple of maintenance issues. The shower on the jack-n-jill side door would never close tight and would flood the floor with water while showering. Also the air conditioning system is linked to the balcony doors, and if the doors are open for a length of time, the system shuts off. Somehow this affected the controls, because if we adjust the temperature from default 72 deg, after a couple hours it would reset to default. The maintenance guy disconnected the doors from the controls, which solved the problem until they came back the reconnected it the next day. So I would check the temp every time I walked by and readjust it. Something of a pain. But the room itself was fantastic. The grounds were beautiful and we enjoyed the pool. People were so very nice. The travel agent in the lobby also was very helpful. Definitely recommended!
