“Private, convenient, well maintained cottage”
Reviewed 5 March 2010

We loved the independence of having our own cottage, saving a little money by having breakfast at "home". We used the fridge and coffee maker, but were too lazy to cook. The canal cottage has 2 bathrooms, so we didn't have to share! Great location made it easy to go north or south. Lots of restaurants are nearby. The beaches start as close as a block away, and it's easy to find a secluded spot on any of them! Just beautiful. Hiking trails were just up our road too. All of the beach toys are there for the use of the guests, very handy. Most nights were nice and cool, but on a few hot nights I would have liked an air conditioner. There was a little bit of traffic noise at a nearby intersection, but only at work and home time.

My husband and I rented out all the cottages from the Fern Grotto and had our wedding and reception on the grounds of this gorgeous hotel. The pictures don't do it justice! The cottages are beautiful, with little extra touches everywhere...kitchens were fully stocked, bathrooms were modern, and the grounds were lush and green. The island of Kauai does have wild chickens though, (so roosters might wake you up!) and the cottages don't have phones. But Paul is so willing to help out, that you never miss a thing. And when you came back to the hotel from a day of exploring you felt like you were coming back to your own private retreat. In contrast the big resorts feel totally impersonal.

Fern Grotto Inn is beautiful. We stayed in the River cottage. It was special to be in a classic Hawaiin cottage in lieu of a big condo complex! The amenities were great -- the kitchen was well appointed and had basic spices and condiments -- which was great. We took full advantage of the coolers, boogie boards, beach chairs, flippers and beach umbrella -- these things make a beach trip so much more comfortable! We also used the laundry a couple of times which was great -- it's nice to come home with clean clothes instead of having to face a suitcase of dirty laundry!
Paul was so very helpful. He gave us some good restaurant reccomendations and was very friendly. We had a low wifi signal the first few days and were sitting in the courtyard to check mail (we really didn't mind -- it's a gorgeous lawn!) and we came home to find a signal booster had been installed (without prompting!) You can tell that the Jumas very much love their property and it shows!
Mahalo!!!

The house was lovely---well equipped kitchen, lots of room to cook and visit. It was great to sit on the porch in the morning and have coffee. I loved this place!

Kauai and Fern Grotto Inn is a good connection on the island. Very clean Bungalows and nice owners. The location in Wailua is the ideal point for excursions to Hanalei also as for Waimea Canyon. Restaurants and shopping malls are nearby, you can get all what you want.
We enjoyed our stay very much and can recommend Fern Grotto Inn.

My husband and I stayed in Fern Grotto Inn for 5 nights last week. Garden cottage has a small kitchen, so it was handy to make breakfast or easy meal. We enjoyed the garden and river view. The BBQ outside was quite good, too.
The location was perfect for us. It was easy drive to north, south and west, and we don't have to be sitting in the traffic like the guys staying in Poipu area. There are two supermarkets about 5 min away, so we ate in most of days.
The only down side is the bed was uncomfortable. Other than that we are very happy with all the facilities there.

When we arrived at the Ohana house, our reaction was "oh well, if it rains all week and we don't leave this place, it's ok." Our first morning, we walked through the park, under the bridge and watched the sunrise on the beach without having to cross the freeway. The location was great for trips to Kapaa and Lihue to shop for groceries. It was a central location to head either to Princeville or Poipu. We packed our lunches in the ice chest and used the grill at dinner time. Paul and his wife were responsive and prompt when we had questions. We kayaked, whale watched, went to a luau and took a helicopter ride. Next time, we'll just stay at the house and walk on the beach and relax.
