This is a charming hotel in an excellent location. Staff were very friendly, beautiful location and rooms were well equipped. And free wi-fi!
Beware the pillows - Very uncomfortable!

We hadn't booked anywhere in Kauai, and stumbled across this hotel when night was appearing fast. We were very impressed at the standard and location and the great hospitality of George and Rhonda. And compared to other hotels it was great value for money and we only wished we could have stayed there longer. The room was everything we needed and we had the cheaper room closest to the main road and we could not hear the traffic at all. The local Kapaa village is very unique and has great cafes and restaurants all within walking distance.

Other than a few concerns about the reservations in advance, which were then warranted by some mistakes in the type of room (two beds v. one but were resolved because they had extra rooms available), the stay there was wonderful!
The location just steps away on a nicely maintained lawn to the beach with a little area to sit (but no swimming!), was so warm and relaxing.
The upgraded rooms were gorgeous with granite bathrooms, jacuzzi tubs. A small refrigerator in the rooms would have been nice, but all the other touches were wonderful.
The hotel is right on the bike/walking path and you can get some exercise. Also in short walking distance to several great restaurants in Kapa'a including the best fish tacos I had in Hawai'i and a great Indian restaurant!

We have been staying at this hotel for forty years and each time it gets better. Rhonda and George were excellent hosts for this hotel on the beach that has been upgraded three times in the years that we have been coming. It is a 3 story modern "motel like" structure about 100 feet from the beach and a short walk to the town of Kapaa and a few good restraunts. Room rates have always been reasonable and our stay was friendly and great. George and Rhonda can advise you of the places to visit. If you are looking for a place with room service, strumming ukes, luaus, and hula shows, you better keep looking. If you want a quiet and friendly place on the beach with out spending king's ransom, this is it. Ample on-site parking.

We booked for six nights based on trip advisor recommendations which are pretty spot on. If you're into crowded commercial resort accommodations this hotel isn't for you. If you want a hotel that's quiet, intimate, luxurious, on the beach, full of "aloha" yet affordable then this is your hotel.
The one thing I strongly recommend is that you book an ocean view room---they are SO WORTH it!! I got a great internet rate on their hotel web site for their "garden view" room and was initially looking for value. We arrived a day earlier than our reservations and had to stay in an ocean room view our first night for a higher rate as the garden view rooms were booked that night. What a pleasant surprise when we first entered our ocean view room! It looked just like the picture on their hotel web site, beautiful old Hawaiian ambiance. The bathrooms were upgraded with granite, jacuzzi tub, and mood lighting. We were on the first floor and able to access the back lawn and ocean area through a sliding glass door just steps from the ocean. There were lawn chairs on the grass just for the guests to sit, relax, and watch the waves and ocean. As has been previously stated you can't swim this beach. There's plenty of swimmable beaches nearby if that's what you want to do.
The second night we were given our "garden view" room after a long day of sightseeing. After that first fabulous night in the ocean view room we were sorely disappointed but too tired to do anything about it so we made the best of it. It was nowhere near as nice, nor updated, smallish. The lanai overlooked a garbage bin, and we heard the highway traffic noise all night (which you don't hear in the ocean view rooms as the wind is rustling through the palm trees and you hear the ocean waves). Early the next morning we were in the front office requesting an upgrade---and quite willing to pay for it as there is no comparison between the two room types. We had a couple of picnic type dinners on our lawn overlooking the ocean and practically had the place to ourselves. Their pool is in a fenced in area, well maintained, and wasn't much used during our stay. The place is quiet all day and night. It's a short walk to downtown Kapa'a to several restaurants and shopping. It's centrally located to explore both the north and south/west sides of the island.
Their wireless internet didn't work well inside the room so you had to go outside nearer to the office and "suffer" through looking at the ocean while doing your online business. If you're mosquito bite prone definitely bring and use repellent at night and during the day. Managers George and Rhonda and their staff are kind, gracious, and very helpful. They have beach towels, mats, chairs to loan while you're out sightseeing. They also have bikes available for rent at the front desk. There are chickens everywhere on the island.
Of note we were there during the tsunami alert. George called us prior to the sirens going off and gave us directions to the evacuation area. He seemed genuinely concerned about the guests and inquired the next day how our night up country went---what an experience!
We will definitely stay here again if ever in Kauai.

My husband and I recently vacationed in Kaua'i for 5 days/4 nights and decided to stay in Kapa'a because it seemed centrally located with lots of interesting restaurants nearby (we love food). We checked into the Coral Reef very late on a Sunday night, and at check-in I noticed that the room charges seemed higher than I remembered when I booked online. But I wasn't sure, so I didn't say anything. We were shown to our room, #2203 and immediately I knew that this was a higher category room than we had initially booked. I'd booked a garden view room with more or less basic amenities, but this was ocean-front and gorgeous! All kinds of fancy amenities like accent lighting, a huge LCD television, a WONDERFUL jacuzzi tub and double vanity in the bath, a plush king-sized bed and a wet bar with microwave and fridge. And so beautifully designed! We momentarily thought about going down and notifying the front desk of the error, but we fell in love with the room and upon discussion, decided to take it, even with the higher charges. It was WAY too beautiful to pass up! And I have to say, that at only $189 a night, for the luxurious nature of that room, it was still a great bargain in Kaua'i from my research. From the outside, this hotel looks very humble, kind of like a motel, but that luxury oceanfront room could have been in any fancy high-rise hotel anywhere. It really was so comfortable and well appointed! It's unusual that I willingly agree to pay more for something than I had planned, but let me tell you - we checked out of this hotel on the final day and paid that bill with a smile, and we never did tell the front desk about that initial mix-up. We really loved our vacation here.

We had an awesome stay at this hotel. The proprietors were so friendly and helpful, giving us great advice and suggestions on things to do. We booked a catamaran tour of the Na Pali Coast using Susan at concierge, and she was very professional and kind to us. The morning breakfast included with room rate features coffee tea, fresh fruit and packaged pastries - the best part is the fresh fruit. I will say that many people might want more to eat in the morning than this, but luckily there are two delicious breakfast joints directly across the street.

The hotel has a small but nice swimming pool, which we never used, and they provide beach towels at the front desk. There are lots of benches and seating in the back garden so you can just sit out and gaze at the beach. The beach here is rocky and not very well-suited to swimming, but it's beautiful nonetheless. There's an awesome paved public beach path perfect for jogging, walking, etc. in the mornings - you see some beautiful views as you go up and down the path for at least 4 miles or so. Awesome at daybreak.

We used the hotel's coin-operated laundry once during our trip, which was really convenient - love packing light on vacation and just doing a load if needed. There was free wi-fi in the lobby and in the backyard bench area immediately outside the lobby. This hotel also had complimentary parking, a welcome amenity after hunting for parking everyday during our stay in Honolulu.

There are some AWESOME restaurants near this hotel, ranging from the super casual/cheap to the more pricey, all kinds of cuisines, and for every meal of the day. You will not go hungry while staying here!

Overall we enjoyed ourselves at the Coral Reef and would totally stay here again. Hope we get the chance soon! Mahalo to the staff and proprietors for a wonderful time.
