“Kauai Paradise”
Reviewed 5 July 2011

Visited on business and did not want to stay at the conference chain hotel. I found Coral Reef online and took a chance. Special offer (4 nights for price of 3) fit in my per diem budget. Absolutely delightful place. Staff is friendly and helpful. The room was oceanfront with beautiful views and a real Kauai rooster outside to help me get up in the morning. The hotel calls itself a resort (it does have a pool) but it's really a beautiful quiet place, with only 20+ rooms. If you want to enjoy Kauai and NOT be a part of screaming hordes at huge hotel resorts, this is the place for you. It's best to have a rental car. Only a couple of restuarants are nearby. I bought wine and a fresh pineapple at a Safeway. Room has a refrigerator. Wonderful walking path that goes on for miles is just outside your door by the ocean. I can't wait to find an excuse to return to this piece of paradise!

Pros:
1, Our ocean front view room was about 50 yds from the ocean. I dont think their are too many places on Kauai where you can get that for $150.00 a night.
2. The rooms were kept clean.
3. Hotel staff was for the most part, friendly and attentive. Had a little run in with them during checkout. Ill get to that later.
3. While the outside looks dated, the inside of the rroms are fairly updated. Flat sceen tv, nice beds, updated ceiling lights.
4. There's a restaurant across the street called the Kountry Kitchen. Awesome pancakes and omlettes.
5. They have 3 bicycles that they'll rent you for $5 a day. Pretty convenient b/c theres a 4 mile bike path right behind the hotel that parrallels the ocean. Plus, you can ride them through town and pass most of the cars stalled in traffic.

Cons:

1. It's in Kapa'a. By that, i mean traffic here is worse than Friday afternoon rush hour traffic in downtown Austin. Also, i'm not saying its lower end income on this side of the island, but i dont think anyone will ever confuse Kapa'a with Princeville. Go to Princeville and you will see what I mean.
2. Too much room furniture. The rooms for a double queen are too small. They tried jamming three chairs into this room, which gave us no space at all. It wouldve been better if they had taken all the chairs out. Reminded me of a NYC hotel room (tiny).
3. The beds were too firm. My wife never got a good nights sleep on their matress. She claims she found softer surrfaces on the top of the Waimea Canyon. I thought the beds were pretty firm but i can sleep on floors.

I want to give this place 4 stars but i will not. Why? Because during checkout, the staff got all petty with me. As I approached the checkout desk, there they were, like bodies chalked out at a crime scene in some dark alley: 2 stained towels. Like evidence being presented at my trial, I felt like Tot Mom having to explain herself to the police as to why she waited 31 days to report her child missing. The prosecutor errrrr. housekeeper kindly showed me two stained towels from my room. They insisted I pay for them since they were stained and could not be used again. True, I had taken some towels during an ATV excursion and had used them after i ahd showered. Understand this: I am not upset at having to pay for some towels that i ruined, just dont tell me you paid $15.00 for each towel because that is crap. I dont believe you bought them at Macy's and i don't really care how much in gas in cost you to drive ten miles to the mall to get them. They should factor in the cost of doing business and not try to make a profit from selling towels That's my beef with them. Having dropped over a thousand bucks for an 8 day stay, i thought it was weak for them to charge me that much for them.

Also, plan wisely. Most of our activities occurred on the west and south side of the island. thats where we should have stayed. We spent a lot of time commuting to our activites and theres a lot of traffic on the island and a lot of traffic construction. Stay at a location that is central to your activities, if at all possible.

We just returned from a 9 day stay at the Coral Reef Hotel and the only thing we hated was having to leave! The hotel has a great location on the East Shore, making trips to both the North Shore and South Shore very convenient. Another plus...there were many restaurants and stores located nearby. Access to the Ke Ala Hele Makalae bike/pedestrian path couldn't be any easier...it's located directly behind the hotel! George and Rhonda, the managers, even have bikes they rent on the cheap for a day full of fun.

Speaking of George & Rhonda, I couldn't complete this review without giving them a "shout-out" for their true Aloha! The pride they take in their facility and town is apparent from the moment you meet them. We received a greeting from them daily and they were always close-by if we needed recommendations. By the time we left, it felt more like they had invited us to stay in one of their guest rooms rather than at a hotel!

The room itself had everything we could possibly need and had been nicely updated. The bed was super comfy and the jetted tub was the perfect solution for the exhaustion that follows experiencing action-packed days of fun! It was great falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean and waking up to the views...which you could see right from your bed in the ocean-front king room.

Their on-site washer/dryer was a nice bonus the day we returned from getting soaked on a morning kayak adventure (the one day that the rain didn't move out as quickly as it moved in!). They had a cooler that they lent us which really came in handy on our daily explorations of the island. Beach towels could be exchanged easily and they had nice chairs located outside for when you just wanted to sit back, chill and take it easy. The free wi-fi worked better in some parts of the room than in others, but once you figured out where the "magic spot" was, it was easy to keep in touch with the "outside world" [I kept a daily blog to keep friends & family updated and to share pictures and details while they were still fresh in my mind!] The pool was nice and we even had it to ourselves on the day we used it. Parking was plentiful, and even though the hotel is located directly on the main highway, we rarely had an issue getting in or out. We were amazed when the traffic would stop in both directions to let us out...everybody was so laid-back on this island! They provided pastries and fruit each morning inside the main lobby...just what we needed to get us going. One final highlight was when we asked for a late checkout on our last day (without any previous notice) and it was available for a reasonable charge.

All in all, you couldn't ask for a better place to stay with such awesome views at such a good price! Don't hesitate to book your stay at the Coral Reef Hotel. We loved it.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean-front king room...great views!

This is an older property with small but nicely renovated rooms. Our Ocean view room was a double queen, nicely furnished with comfortable beds & A/C. Modern bath with a jet tub and rain shower head and blow drier. Very small, with no refridgerator (they lent us a small ice chest) and no microwave. Rooming with 2 other friends was a challenge in this tight room, but the view can't be beat and we were literally steps away from the ocean. The staff was friendly and helpful. They offer free use of beach towels, chairs and ice chests. No dining to speak of- most things are a short car ride away in Kapa'a. There is a small grocery store across the street. The "continental breakfast" was some granola bars, fruit salad and coffee. Very busy road with lots of construction traffic, but our room was quiet. After visiting other towns on Kauai, I would not stay in Kapa'a again, better weather and beaches either to the north or south. This hotel was fine for a quick stay for a wedding, but not a 'resort' experience! We got what we paid for- 3 nghts for the price of 2, just under $500 total with taxes etc.

We hadn't booked anywhere in Kauai, and stumbled across this hotel when night was appearing fast. We were very impressed at the standard and location and the great hospitality of George and Rhonda. And compared to other hotels it was great value for money and we only wished we could have stayed there longer. The room was everything we needed and we had the cheaper room closest to the main road and we could not hear the traffic at all. The local Kapaa village is very unique and has great cafes and restaurants all within walking distance.
