The best thing about this hotel is the location. It is literally right in front of the beach. But, there are very large lawn between sandy beach and beach walk, and you will see beach, ocean, coconut trees, beyond the lawn. You can sit on the lawn, do yoga, or eat whatever you like.
Also, the location is the north end of Kapaa downtown, and you can walk to the downtown either along the beach or the main road of Kauai in several minutes to dine or do some unique shopping.
The facility looks nothing special from outside, but inside is very comfortable.
The staffs are friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: I would recommend ocean front rooms even though it is a bit mreo expensive.

This property was perfect for us. We arrived late at night and it was relatively close to airport and easy to find. Our room overlooked the water. It was amazing to see the sunrise and hear the ocean right from our bed! The room was very nicely furnished and had a small fridge and coffee maker. The hotel provides a continental breakfast and coffee which was just right for us. Hotel is within walking distance of restaurants and shopping. There is also a waterfront biking/running path right out front which extends for several miles along the ocean to some beautiful beaches and views and also into town. The hotel has bikes available for rental at very reasonable rates. The pool area is small but nice.
We stayed here 2 nights and explored the southern and eastern parts of the island from here before heading to the north shore for the remainder of our trip. It is not a mega resort if that is what you are looking for but if you like smaller properties I'm not sure you could do much better!!

We've traveled to Kapaa, Kauai 3 times and stayed in different places. This year we stayed at Hotel Coral Reef just outside of Kapaa. It backs onto the Kauai Path, and we were in the building, 2nd floor, facing the ocean. Every morning I watched the sunrise from my lanai, and then went for the continental breakfast, which had fruit, yogurt, granola, juice, rolls, and coffee. On days that we weren't doing much, I would read and watch people walk their dogs, come back from the store with their shopping bags, bike or jog, play in the lawn area between the Path and the ocean and watch the ocean. As others have said the rooms are not lavish, however, the few times we needed something done in the room, staff was there quickly to make it right. The rooms were clean, contained a coffee maker and small refrigerator, ironing board/iron and hair dryer, and housekeeping honored all of our requests. We stayed in February when there are thunder storms, and we had a lightening show one early morning with accompanying booms of thunder to start our day! Desk staff helped us make reservations for a whale watching cruise, gave us directions for sights and restaurants. Coral Reef is close to many restaurants, and Beachwalk Restaurant was wonderful. I would definitely recommend this to friends, and I would go again, especially the ocean front building with 16 rooms. There is a coin-operated laundry room available off of the office; there is a building for those who want long-term rentals (a nurse inquired when we were in the office), and a long-building facing the gazebo. And of course there were Kauai chickens on the grounds, one hen had 7 chicks that I would watch, and spread crackers crumbs around for them all. The Hotel Coral Reef has a website and they run specials at times. There is a beautiful pool with a waterfall, but just a little chilly at the time of our stay to use it.

Room Tip: Try the ocean front rooms on the 2nd floor - better views, and no worries about people walking by if...

Nice spacious, clean rooms with views, through coconut palms, over the ocean. Quiet, off the highway and conveniently located in Kapaa town. Pool, bikes to hire, good breakfast, a nice play to stay.
However, there are certainly a few negatives, which is a shame, because this hotel has an awful lot going for it. The ceiling fan didn't work and the fridge was only just-about functioning. There was an enormous TV but no microwave.
Administration could be better. We were running 12 hours late (flight delay from San Francisco) and contacted reception via e mail from SFO and through family in the UK. We received no response and no advice. Consequently, when we arrived at 2am we had to sleep in the hire car in the car park. The following morning at 7am the lady at reception gave us our key but did not acknowledge our efforts to contact the hotel, apologise or comment on our problems.
No receipt was given at the end of our visit and no reimbursement was offered.

Room Tip: Be aware that e mail correspondence is not fool-proof and response times are slow. Do make sure you...

We liked the unique characteristics of this hotel, right on the beach, kind of a retro place, beautiful grounds and an under-used pool. Free parking and free continental breakfast. The room was disappointing. Ground floor which is quite exposed to foot traffic on a common coastal trail.
There was a stick in the runner of the sliding door and assumed it was extra security. It wasn't until the next morning that we realized the door lock didn't work. When we reported this to staff, they told us they were aware and had ordered a new mechanism. We strongly believe we should have been told about this issue upon check-in and should have had an option to change rooms if one was available. Did not care for the relaxed attitude about this issue.

Although all furnishings are comfortable, the room is too crowded with it. Can't figure why they put an arm chair in the bathroom. The tub-shower combo is a very high step to climb into and could be an issue for some travelers. Disappointed with the lack of space around two double sinks and one of the towel rings was missing, leaving a tacky torn spot on the wall. The room is issued one set of towels per person and pool towels need to be checked in and out of the office.

The plantation shutters in the room are charming, but some of the vinyl panels were broken and we had to put a chair in front of them at night to keep the panels closed. That's not good.

On check out day, computers were out due to an island-wide power outage. This prevented generation of a receipt. Although I gave them my email address, we never received a receipt. The devil is in the details at this hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a second floor room as there is little advantage to ground floor.

Aloha,

Thank you for taking the time to review our property on tripadvisor . I would like to apologize for the inconvenience that you may have encountered. I have taken your suggestions and conducted an internal investigation into all items that were mentioned to insure a more positive experience when you return. The Coastal pathway has been a unique attraction for visitors and residents within the eastern region of Kauai. Our ground floor oceanfront guest rooms are approximately 50 - 100 feet away from the coastal pathway which allows each room to enjoy a sense of privacy. All procedures were promptly enacted when staff received a report of the security lock malfunction. All oceanfront guest rooms feature a collection of Tommy Bahama furniture as well as our signature whirlpool Jacuzzi tubs which have become a unique feature in which many of our guest look forward to enjoying. I would like to thank you again for your comments and for taking the time to write about your experience here at Hotel Coral Reef we look forward to your return.

I give the hotel "5" for location, value, service and "2/3" for the room. If I were to do it again, I would consider staying here again, but I would definitely get the nicer rooms instead.

The hotel has two types of units, I think - "nice" rooms in a building facing the beach, and economy rooms in a different building. I booked an economy room, which wasn't a great idea; it's just an average room. The economy rooms are close to the road, the main highway, and there was a lot of road noise; and it made it hard to sleep. Fortunately, I got some earplugs from Walmart and they helped quite a bit. The other deficiencies of the room were the lack of a desk (inside) and wifi (the signal does not reach the room even one teensy bit, you have to go down to the lobby, where the wifi worked very well); they were minor pains. On the plus side, the AC worked great in the room, as did the shower, tv, etc. The bed was soft for me but that's a personal preference.

The hotel is in a good location, right along the beach, and the beach facing units must have nice views of the ocean. It's along the Kauai (Coastal) Path, so there's a nice walk or bike path right outside the door. It's in the middle of Kapaa, so you can drive / walk to restaurants, shops in little time. Kapaa is about midway between the "north" side of Kauai and the "south" side, so it's convenient if you are exploring the entire island. It's only a few minutes to the airport.

I found the hotel staff to be super nice, but I dealt mostly with one person, and he was very patient and kind (I listened to him dealing with some difficult customers, and boy he was nice). They have a nice little pool there. I liked the breakfast, but I also found it slightly annoying that they didn't have real sugar or milk / cream (they have truvia and non-dairy creamer). I wonder why, because they have some pricy items for breakfast, like fresh fruit, yogurt, mini babybel cheese, etc. They have a few chairs on the porch and it's very nice to sit outside and have breakfast. I rented a bike from them. It was only $5 for two hours, plenty of time to do this section of the coastal path.

The economy room was very cheap, and even though the room was meh, I would consider it an excellent value. The website is a little unclear as to what kind of room you're booking, because everything seems to be described as a "garden suite". The only clue that you're booking the cheap room is the price.

Room Tip: Don't book an economy room.

Hotel was a nice location on the beach, room was adequate, beds comfortable, but that is where the positive comments end, The staff were not capable of eye contact or a smile, should not really have such an impact but the rest of our holiday in Kauai was the exact opposite (people were so friendly and accommodating) and staff can make a difference to your overall impression of the vacation. Don't ask for milk for your coffee, even though they own the restaurant attached to the hotel they won't provide it.
