Easy living stay! The location is good to travel from North shore to South shore of Kauai. The staff is really nice and friendly. There is a lovely garden and the whole place is clean. If i go back to Kauai, i will definitively go to Honu'ea International Hostel! Thanks xxx

We stayed for 13 days, wich was 6 days more than planned. The location is amazing and Kapaa is a wonderful little town with all you need. The hostel was cozy and homey, with a great kitchen and a small common area with a large table and couches. It was a very safe place to stay and we had no problems leaving all our stuff, incl. phones, ipads and everything behind when we went out.
The best thing though was the staff and managers! Autumn, Bill and Sunny is an amazing and loving team, who try their best to make your stay amazing. We love you guys and we are definitely comming back!

This place has improved tremendously since the last and only other time I stayed here six years ago. I stayed here for a week at that time, and when I left I had decided that I would never come back because the person running the place made me and other guests feel like we were more or less at the mercy of his mood swings and whatever new and strange rule he would institute at any given moment. In short, he was a very peculiar person who generally made others feel unwelcome and ill at ease. On subsequent visits to Kauai I decided that camping in my tent was more pleasant. This year in May I finally decided to give this palce another try because I had learned that it was under new management and read reviews from recent guests that clearly indicated that the place had changed. In the past this hostel got some bad reviews that were deserved, but I would encourage anyone thinking about staying here to consider the newer reviews from the last year or two and pretty much disregard the older ones that are consistently bad.

Autumn and Bill are the new managers, and I found them to be exceptionally friendly. They manage to run the place with a balance of order and casualness that created a pleasant stay for me. The place is clean, quiet enough, well kept, and as well run as any hostel to which I would return or recommend to others. I will certainly return in the future. I should mention that during this stay I stayed in a private room in the main house because it solved one of the problems I had on my last stay, which was not being able to get into the main house to use the kitchen until 8:00 in the morning. In the past that was a problem for me because I like to get up very early and go hiking, but most guests do not seem to be bothered by this because they tend to get up later than me.

First I should say that I love staying in hostels and have probably stayed in a little over 60 throughout the world. I stayed in the mixed dorm for one night and the bed was one of the most comfortable hostel beds. The bathrooms were very clean, and the kitchen was also well equipped and clean. I met some great people at the hostel, so really my stay was quite enjoyable... it was a little inconvenient having to stop socializing at 10 but I can also appreciate that they have quiet hours and it's possible to have some non-party peace. The beach isn't far and we hung out there into the night. Some people didn't like that the hostel wasn't beachfront, but I was actually ready to give a rating of 5 despite this shortcoming. However...

Upon check-in, the guy at the desk briefly mentioned something about how I needed to be off the property after I checked out the following day, but if I needed to stay a little time I should just ask whoever was working and it might be ok. I figured they just wanted me to move out of the room, but they aren't going to eject me from the property or something after I've stayed there for a night.

So I checked out, went for a hike and got some lunch with some of the other people staying there, and then followed them back to the hostel to have a quick beer before heading to my next spot. After a short time, the female owner came out with a clipboard and asked us our names saying she wanted to "put some names to some faces". I told her my name and that I had checked out that morning. She kind of reminded me that checkout was at 11, which indirectly implied that she wanted me to leave the hostel. She explained that it's hostel policy and it's posted throughout the property. I asked if they had an issue with someone in creating this policy, and she replied that the policy has been that way for 20 years and it's a pretty standard thing in hostels. I was allowed to finish my beer with the understanding that I would leave after this.

It was only 4 of us in the common room, so I wasn't taking up space that a guest wanted. I wasn't using the wifi. I wasn't making a lot of noise or something, just quietly relaxing with some other guests and drinking my own beer. I could understand if I was causing a problem, but for no reason other than being there after checkout I was asked to leave. She wasn't mean about it, but she was definitely indirect about it, which struck me as a little unprofessional... honestly some of the other guests were more offended by how it was handled than I was.

Without exaggeration, every hostel I have ever stayed at has offered me to hang out at the hostel the day I check out as long as I move out of the room. I've been welcome to use the facilities or leave my bags in a luggage room at every hostel I've been to. Here, I was asked to leave because I was taking up one seat on a futon while my bags were in my car. I guess I was taking up a parking space for about a half hour when there were 5 or so others available. Of course you can run your hostel however you like, but don't tell me that it's standard policy at every hostel. In fact, I checked out of a hostel in Waikiki at 10 and stayed there until 2 waiting for a flight before coming here.

I would highly recommend that you revise this policy... one of the main reasons I prefer hostels is the welcoming and personal atmosphere. This post-stay experience was enough to inspire me to check out the other hostel in the neighborhood on my next trip to Kauai. I could understand if I was some random person that a guest brought back from a local bar or something, or if I was being disorderly and causing an issue, but I really can't agree that being asked to leave was warranted in the least given that I was a former guest and pretty harmless.

Room Tip: Mixed dorm was very nice and the farthest from the common area.

This is an hostel which means no need to expect an hotel quality
but not meaning wanting to stay at dirtiest place. This place is
looking like an owners fun house rather than an accomodation.
I stayed dozens of hostels everywhere never seen an scruffy
place. Kitchen is not clean an opening at 08.00 am for to prepare
your breakfast very quickly because check-out is at 10.00
I think the bathrooms are never cleaning also there is no soap
toilet paper etc. Finally I went to rehabilitation when I returned
after seeing their dirtiness.

I am sorry you had an unpleasant stay on Kauai, but I believe you had stayed elsewhere. Our checkout is at 11am, not 10am as described.

In any event, we wish you luck on your future travels.

Reading the reviews about this hostel surprised me. Some of the older reviews have tainted this hostel unfairly. Whatever it was in the past does not matter. I was there about 3 weeks ago. It is a fun place with people from all over the World coming in to stay. I met some amazing people there and made friends, which made my stay even better. Great location. Right in the center of Kapaa. Restaurants and shops are in easy walking distance. Public transportation is available about a block away on the main beach highway. I stayed there for 2 weeks. In my opinion, it was much more than I expected. It is not a new place, but the new owners, Autumn and Bill have made an effort to make very comfortable. Not fancy, but really good enough. I slept in a dorm with bunk beds. There are private rooms available that have been newly remodeled. Thing is, how much time does the average traveler spend in his bunk? Just to sleep or take a nap, I think. Other time was spent in the outdoor common area, charging my iPhone using, the Wi-Fi, sending email, making Mojitos at my personal happy hour and chatting with people. It all comes down to expectations really. This place surpassed mine... I would return without any hesitation. Very relaxing and fun. Two weeks seemed like 2 months and that it a good thing when you are on vacation!

Room Tip: It is a good idea to book your rooms in advance to get what you are looking for.
