Our Hawaiian tour guide, Domi, was the ultimate best tour guide ever. He taught us all about his island, then playfully quizzed us as we drove along the north shore about things he had previously taught us. We learned so much and he even taught us some of the Hawaiian language and customs. He is so knowledgeable about the land, language, and customs and even "preached" to us about the importance of Aloha (to love one another). As a group we chose to have home cooking for lunch, so he took us to a small Home cooking restaurant in the shopping center in Waipouli. The Macadamia Nut pancakes, bar none, were the best I have had anywhere. My husband ordered Loco Moco (an island favorite) and when we were all finished (there were ten of us) Domi collected all our scrap food and took us to his home, where he fed his pet pig, Omar, and let us all "pet" him for good luck. Within 1/2 hour we spotted Spinner Dolphins at the Lighthouse in Princeville and we were so excited to see them. We believe that was our good luck! The tour lasted about 8 hours total, so would probably be best suited for adults, older children or couples. We also toured several beaches, Hanalei and Domi took us to see "Puff the Magic Dragon" there, which is visible from certain points on the island. Truly a fantastic, fun-filled day with Domi and The Best of Kauai Tour, North Shores.

three parts to tour: plane ride, boat ride, and van tour. plane ride was good,he tried to go around and give everyone on either side a view. fern grotto boat ride-fair at best. the van tour was simply a waste of money. the driver kept showing us the old road and where it had been. when he took us down a portion of the road and showed us the remains of an old post office, I thought he had lost it !! I know I had lost money and the day! the best of Kauai is only in the Kaapa and Princeville areas-definitely not the best tour. his only redemption as a guide was he took us to country kitchen restaurant in Kaapa. at the end he even had the audacity to suggest a tip amount for himself. save yourselves from this tour

Great way to see Nawiliwili. Our guide, Domi Ragsac was fantastic, giving us language lessons and Hawaiian culture & history lessons and keeping us engaged. There were 8 of us in a very comfortable & roomy van. I can't imagine a better tour guide than Domi...he even took us to his home so we could see his pet pig which he fed with scraps from our lunch. And by doing this we got to see what neighborhoods in Kauai look like and not just the tourist views. For lunch he took us to a truly local little inexpensive restaurant where the servings were large and delicious. Everything described in their web site was delivered and MORE! Because of this tour my wife and I want to come back to Kauai for more than just a day off a cruise ship and when we do this tour will be on my list of things to do.

We had the pleasure of spending the day with Steve today! The tour lived up to its reputation. The narration was fun, interactive and informative. Being hosted by someone who grew up in the area added rich insight and appreciation for the uniqueness of this beautiful island. Of special note was learning about how the island has changed due to weather, modernization and changing economic factors. As you can see, this tour was not only a great way to see beautiful hidden treasures, it was also a historical journey.

Steve is obviously well respected and well liked. Everywhere we went he was greeted warmly and we were felt invited.

Something to keep in mind, you will experience a slight delay at the boat tour waiting for the plane riders to arrive. Although this wasn't a problem for us, it is noteworthy. This was a great time to explore the area.

As our title indicates, this is a Must Do on our Kauai List. Enjoy!

Steve gave a good presentation at the first-morning briefing at our timeshare, so we signed up for the “combo” tour, which included an airplane flight around the island by AirVentures. The idea was that people would be taken to out-of-the-way places we hadn’t seen even if we had been to Kauai before (and we’ve been here a dozen times). It was Steve who picked us up at 8 a.m. along with about seven others also staying in Princeville. Steve grew up in Kauai and regaled us with his memories of buildings from the 70s and how they, bridges, agricultural fields, and roads had changed. He drove around neighborhoods in Princeville where albatrosses were guarding their eggs, then along the east shore. Our group was divided into two parts for the “rides”: while one group took Smith’s boat cruise up the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto, the other flew over the island in a small fixed-wing aircraft. Then we switched. After that we stopped at a small restaurant in Kapaa (Kountry Kitchen) where we paid for our own reasonably good lunches. The main stop afterwards was at the Kilauea lighthouse with views of the adjoining bird sanctuary, with nesting red-footed boobies and other exotic birds soaring overhead or diving into the sea. After a brief visit to Anini Beach, we were back “home” by about 3:30 p.m.

Steve is knowledgeable and personable, making a great effort to learn everyone’s names. He can point out hidden waterfalls, wild pigs, and vacation homes of Hollywood stars that we never would have seen or known about on our own, despite our many trips to the Garden Isle. In fact, we had never done the boat cruise to the Fern Grotto, despite its popularity – it was pleasant enough, though the grotto itself and singing of the “Hawaiian Wedding Song” fell short of spectacular. We had previously seen the island by helicopter and thought the fixed-wing view would complement that earlier experience – and it did. The helicopter ride is an expensive but amazing adventure. The less-expensive airplane ride provides an overview of the whole island, enabling you to understand the geographical relationships of the different parts of Kauai. So it was fine for us. But if this is your one trip to Kauai, helicopter is the air trip to take.

“Best of Kauai” is really a misnomer. From our knowledge of the island, the most impressive parts are (1) the north coast section from Hanalei to where the road ends at “Bali Hai” and (2) Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park. Neither is visited on this tour. Nor, for that matter, the beautiful, sunny beaches from the Poipu area to the immense sandy beach at the going-clockwise end of the highway on the west end of Kauai. To be fair, there is no way that one could cover all of that on a one-day van tour, even if it were extended another couple of hours and the river/air trips were dispensed with. Nevertheless, this is really a “Some of the Best of the East Coast of Kauai + Survey of the Island by Air” tour.

There were some annoyances. The airplane flight of 50 minutes was short compared with the “longer than an hour” that was promised. We had to wait in a sunny parking lot for nearly half-an-hour after our Wailua River trip before Steve returned. Steve promised that he would take us to some spots in the lighthouse/bird sanctuary region that could not be visited by regular tourists…but there were regular tourists (at $5 each) everywhere Steve took us.

Particularly irksome were Steve’s continual religious, right-wing, anti-scientific views that he interspersed with his commentary throughout. Though he acknowledges that “some people” think Kauai is millions of years old, he prefers to believe it is just 6000 years old. He thinks man-made climate change is a joke. There is no reason for scientific illiteracy to be part of a tour like this. The final sour point was at the end when Steve explained that an appropriate tip for him would be 10% - 15% of the full cost of the combo tour. Well, we took the tour at the discounted price. (In Kauai, you should rarely pay the full cost for anything – the “full cost” prices, even in the supermarket, are basically fictitious, or for the naïve. Of course, even the discounted prices are generally very expensive by mainland standards.) In addition, we had already tipped the pilot and should hardly have to tip Steve again for the plane ride, which accounts for nearly half the cost of the combo tour. We tipped Steve a bit more than half of what he wanted us to pay.

Overall, the combo tour was pretty good. But our Captain Andy’s whale-watch/sunset/dinner cruise to the Na Pali Coast was spectacular and a much better deal.
