We had originally booked our trip with North Shore Charters for the afternoon of our second full day on the island. It turns out weather was not in our favor, but we received a call from Janelle (sp?) late in the afternoon the day before we were scheduled. She initially moved us to that morning as there would be a better chance the weather would hold up but it ended up not working out. We had the ability to reschedule for the morning of our fourth day on the island and the weather held up that time.
So first of all, we were appreciative that North Shore Charters took into account weather and our safety as well as working with us to be able to take part in this activity while we were on the island.
We absolutely loved it, too -- so very glad it worked out. Check-in was at 7:00 and we were coming from Kapa'a so it was less than 40 minutes to get there. We swung by a bakery kitty-corner to the office for coffee and a quick bite (I'd make sure they are open before relying on that, but it worked out for us).
Janelle got us checked in and then once everyone was checked in (14 total) she drove us about 10 minutes to where the boat was docked. From there it was on -- Gary was the captain and Asher the assistant (I apologize if I got spellings wrong, or completely messed up a name), both of whom were incredibly friendly and helpful. Gary gave us great views, stopping along the way, and shared with us information about the various sights. No picture can do this justice, the views were truly amazing. The snorkeling at the end was really just a good rest from the boat as the views were mediocre, but we were told that'd be the case beforehand, something to do with the water movement / weather / something this land-locked tourist can't exactly recall.
While the ride out was pretty smooth, the ride back was choppy. But note that is not a complaint! It was FUN! Just know you're going to put in some physical effort on some part of the trip and you'll enjoy yourself. You may feel it a bit the next day. But for us, it was so very well worth it. We will be doing this again next time we go to Kauai, it's that simple.
