Chuck took us on a guided hike of the Waimea Canyon. He picked us up from the hotel in Poipu and talked the entire way to the canyon about the countryside we were driving through. Then we hiked through the canyon for about 60-90 minutes, stopped at a beautiful overlook for lunch, then hiked back. Sure we could have followed hiking trails through the canyon on our own, but we wouldn't have gotten nearly as much out of it. Chuck knows a lot about the geology of the area, as well as about the flora and fauna. We also discussed the agricultural history and prospects for the island, the impacts from the last two hurricanes and the struggles of the endemic species. Invaluable, if you're trying to understand Kauai.
