“Beautiful quiet retreat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 May 2014

We stayed at Hale Kua for 3 days. The location was absolutely beautiful, very relaxing, private, and tropical. The sounds of the birds and even the cows were a treat, and gave us a real feeling of belonging, in a way staying at a large resort never could. The rooms were large, with a nice kitchen and washer and dryer. Our only concern was that we never met the owners. When we arrived, there was no one at the property, and we had no idea where to go. We called the phone number on our reservation and were told which room was ours (Banana Patch), and to pick up the keys, which had been left on a table for us in the unlocked room. The location of Hale Kua was very convenient to everything we wanted to visit, but was a little difficult to find the first time. I suspect these communication difficulties had to do with the fact that we booked through Hotels.com. I would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone, but improved communications might make things easier for first-time visitors.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are very private and have wonderful views.

Our family (two adults, two teenagers) stayed at the Taro Patch for six nights. We loved that it was in a forest away from busy tourist places and yet centrally located within an easy drive to all parts of the island. We had a kitchen for cooking whatever we wanted and use of a cooler and beach equipment. After a busy day of sight seeing, hiking, or snorkeling, we really enjoyed coming back to the smells and sounds of the peaceful forest. We went on daily walks up the hill and enjoyed the diversity of trees, flowers, and birds. Bill and Cathy were wonderful hosts with good tips on things to do on the island. For those who want to get away from the crowds, cook some of your own meals, and not spend a fortune, it is a fabulous place to stay in Kauai!

How great to stay at a private hideaway in a lush, tropical forest! Our cottage was immaculate and well-equipped (kitchen, washer and dryer--even beach chairs a cooler!). Although not on the beach, it's 15 minutes away and the location is central on a small island. Bill and Cathy were so friendly and helpful; answering our many questions and providing thoughtful advice on what to see and do. In answer to the "not for sleeping" review, Kauai has tons of wild chickens (they're even at the shopping mall; no predators) and they do crow just in the morning, but that's part of Kauai. We had no trouble sleeping. We'll be back!

This property is in a nice setting, and was clean. Despite their advertisement as a Bed and Breakfast, they are not a conventional B&B, in fact they only provide in room muffins/coffee/tea to customers who book through an online service. For most customers, the breakfast is you provide and prepare your own in the in room kitchen. Don't expect a central breakfast where you have an opportunity to visit with your host and other guests.

Very peaceful during the day, but the critters mentioned by others includes chickens. Fine during the day, but when they seem to be having a crowing contest from midnight until daylight, it makes for a POOR nights sleep.

Room Tip: You can get more value and better sleep in one of the many condos on the island. If you want seclus...

Am sitting in the Cottage at Hale Kua with screened doors open to the late afternoon breezes. A storm is moving in from the south and the views are even more dramatic.
I am writing this as a response to the recent review that makes one feel as though there is a problem here at Hale Kua. I have been here two weeks. I must have read the same website as the author of the review so concerned about ants, etc. and found that one of the biggest draws to this location was that it was in a tropical forest.
There are lots of critters on this property because it is a biodiverse tropical environment allowed , for the most part as best as I can see , to carry on without toxic chemicals...except when called for in certain unfortunate situations according to the writer before me.
The reviews prior to "not for us" speak volumes for the way that Cathy and Bill run this business of theirs. The screens may not keep every forest insect out of your sight and the drains are another entry point if it is a concern and this would be a fair statement in most tropical locations, I feel.
Best of luck to the author of "not for us" next time. And for those of us that enjoy our comforts in a more natural setting, this is a worthie destination at a reasonable price. This is my third visit to Kauai and I have stayed at the Marriott and Koa Kea , after being flooded out elsewhere. Indeed comfortable but busy and the forests weren't as interesting.

Room Tip: The website is very helpful.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Hale Kua for a week this summer and loved it! I have been to Kauai many times before and stayed in the tourist areas on the beach, but I enjoyed staying here so much more. It's only a 10 minute drive to Poi Pu beach and when you come back it is paradise. We felt like we were in the jungle- listening and watching so many birds and checking out the amazing tropical landscape on the property.

I think my favorite thing about staying here was how clean the place was, without being "sterile" like a condo or hotel room. We also had a full kitchen with all the cooking utensils you could ever need, and towels for the beach, with snorkels, boogie boards, ice chests, etc.

This place truly became our home away from home in paradise. Bill and Cathy were so welcoming and nice, we want to come back every year!!

Room Tip: Coral tree unit was amazing- has 3 bedrooms and a loft!

This B&B was recommended by a friend on island for some friends of our. They loved it! The location is hidden and feels like a perfect Kauai place to stay. The rates are great, it's just a short drive to town and Lihue and very easy for accessing Poipu, the west side and Waimea Canyon. Princeville is only an hour and a half away, too. Why spend all your money on an expensive resort? Find a place like Hale Kua, meet awesome people, have great accomodations and save your money for dinners out and helicopter rides. Full kitchens help save on money, too!

Room Tip: Owners are very helpful and can guide you toward the right room choices.
