“Family trip to Kauai - First trip to Hawaii”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2014

We travelled to Kauai for our first trip to Hawaii. I booked the Kauai Marriott Resort on points. The grounds/garden are beautiful and there are all kinds of activities for kids. Even though the resort was booked solid and it connects to 2 vacation timeshare properties, it never felt too crowded. We enjoyed the large "flower pool" (as my 3 yr old called it) and the hot tubs. Service was impeccable from the bell desk, to check in, restaurants, housekeeping, etc. We absolutely enjoyed our stay and will come back because they were so kid friendly. Everyone there knew my sons name by the time we left. We loved the central location so we could explore all parts of the island relatively easily.

Room Tip: Kahili tower in the center have full ocean and pool view rooms.

The grounds at the Marriott were very pretty. the gardens and Koi pond as you walk into the reception area let you know right away that you are in paradise! I will say that the layout is very weird. You get out of your car at the main entrance and you have to walk quite far, go down a set of stairs, take a left, then you finally find the reception area....odd. Valet parking is not really worth it, we easily found parking on the side where apparently the public can park for free despite hotel guests being charged a daily fee. We did get a complimentary room upgrade and our room was excellent! We had great views of the water. It is on a bay not open ocean. If you want those Hawaiian open ocean sunset views, you probably want to stay down in Poipu. We wanted to explore the entire island and so this location was perfect for us. And I actually liked the scenery...the pool area is beautiful as well.

Room Tip: As others have said, try for a high floor room. Ours was sitting behind the pool looking straight ou...

We recently had a four night stay at the Resort whilst seeing the beautiful island of Kauai. The resort has beautiful gardens, fantastic pool area and a variety of dining options which allow you to either spend up or save.
The resort shop allows you to buy anything from food, drinks including alcohol, to clothing and souvenirs - very handy.
The free shuttle to the airport gave us easy access to and from our helicopter flight with Blue Hawaiian - magnificent.
Chad the concierge was very helpful in confirming our various tours.
The continental breakfast bar overlooking the pool area was very handy if you only want a light breakfast or like us had an early pick up for a tour and so allowed us to use our breakfast package before the main breakfast restaurant opened - very sensible.
Our garden view room although at an angle looked over the beautiful gardens and towards the pool, did mainly look over the loading dock rear entrance to the adjacent building - but we were not in the room much so not a real drawback.
Having actual laundry facilities that you can use yourself at a resort rather than just a valet laundry facility was very useful.

Room Tip: Check what the outlook will be of your garden view room.

I enjoyed my stay here, primarily for the beautiful, flower-shaped pool, and the pretty grounds. The staff are all very courteous and friendly. Chris, the bartender, was especially kind!

Drawbacks are the beach... It fronts the harbor where cruise ships and other commercial boats dock...not exactly the waters to share with swimmers, in my opinion! But I did see a lot of paddleboarding! Rooms okay nothing special.

If you can get a good rate, I recommend staying here. Rent a car and explore ALL the beaches Kauai has to offer. And then come home to an inviting pool!

The hotel grounds are just absolutely gorgeous. The lush garden landscape with koi pond, fountain, waterfalls, and special birds are spectacular. I walked around every single day. We had a warm, welcoming greeting with fresh leis. We did not receive a room upgrade as it seems other honeymooning couples have reviewed about. Overall, we were happy with our room that had a garden view. The rooms are spacious and modern. The concierge gave us a folder detailing the grounds as well as Kauai. We were given a voucher to make a free snapfish book. In our room we had chilled champagne waiting for us. We were also given vouchers for things such as free mai tais!

The pool is large with fountains and 5 hot tubs. The beach area is small but they have volleyball nets set up and lounge chairs. There is also plenty of chairs around the pool. Chairs were not very comfortable so I requested extra towels. Might be time for the hotel to update the chairs (Suggestion Box)*

We enjoyed the breakfast buffet and Kukui each morning as it was part of our package. Delicious, great options that were changed up daily. The staff was great and attentive. They were always sweet giving us a to-go cup with fresh coffee to take on our way. 15% gratuity is included in the package but we always gave more because they were such friendly wait staff. During our stay we also ate sushi at Toro Tei sushi bar, Kalapaki Grill (bar or pool side service) and Duke's. All were very yummy. We went to Duke's on Tuesday late afternoon for happy which had half priced fish tacos, appetizers and drink specials. The restaurant upstairs in Duke's was very delicious as well with a great view. Have to try the Hula pie which is free for staying at the Marriott!

There are some inexpensive food options off the resort within walking distance if you are interested. Try out Kalapaki Beach Hut and Halo-halo corner.

I'm not so sure that renting a car is necessary for the entire stay in Kauai. As concierge told us, you can only see 20% of the island by car, and 80% by helicopter. There is an enterprise car rental on site and Jack Harter Tour bookings in the same area.

There is a resort fee as there was all throughout Hawaii.

I couldn't use my points at the Marriott on Poipu so I decided to give this one a try. It's an older property but has really been updated. But it won't be good for everyone. The beach is lovely but no snorkeling as it has a sandy bottom. Sometimes there are good waves; sometimes it's very calm. But the pool is great. Wish there was some shade on the beach or pool. The cabanas are very expensive. There pool bar/restaurant is VERY good (Kalapaki Grill) and they'll serve you on the grassy area at the beach. The rooms are lovely (very Marriott) and the greenery and ponds are very lush. Around the corner is a small commercial area with several restaurants and the airport is very close (MUCH closer than for the Poipu hotels) The restaurant at this hotel is AWFUL but there are other options very close by. Not a lot of hotel activities and what they did have all cost additional money but, for Hawaii, this hotel is very reasonable. This is going to be our Hawaii hotel going forward.

Room Tip: Opt for the Ocean View. Worth it

The hotel grounds are beautiful. We had a partial ocean view in HaPu tower 23rd floor..... I could hear the ocean waves coming in and what a view ! The pool area is really awesome and plenty of room for all. The grounds and pool all lighted up at night is a sight to behold. The beach is also very nice there... the area is in a protected cove. The staff was friendly and the rooms were very nicely decorated and clean.
Only negative is that we couldn't get into our room until after 4pm so we had quite a wait and really wasted the better part of the day.

We had breakfast on the terrace overlooking the pool.... very casual...Little tables here and there to enjoy the morning. and we also ate breakfast at the restaurant by the pool another day when we had more time. The food was good but pricey at the hotel. We strolled over to Duke's for dinner and a Hawaiian sunset one night which I highly recommend. Get Duke's Lemonade Yum !

We really liked this hotel and would recommend it

Room Tip: ask for a high room The partial ocean view was fine
