“good location, ok rooms, not so good service”
Reviewed 6 January 2012

stayed here for a week, location is good, but if you are planning on eating out you better rent a car. very limited dining at this hotel.
we reserved an ocean view but were NOT given one an according to them one was not available. We paid for a 2 bedroom with kitchen, and finally after 4 days of arguing we got one.
cleaning staff were good, rooms and sleep quality were great
Hotel is good but aging

stayed at marriott in Oahu last year and that was a much much better hotel and reception staff.
we didnt have any issues with timeshares as we simply declined their offer and freebie and they never bothered us

It'll be a good spot if you get a deal

We return here most years as time share owners, splitting our vacation between Kauai and Oahu. This resort sports beautiful grounds and pools; a short walk to a lovely beach; a poolside terraced restaurant and a casual (Duke's) and fine dining restaurant (Portofino) within very short walking distance; a first-class fitness center; excellent and immediate service ("at your service" means exactly that); and more. The rooms are smaller and less deluxe than those at KoOlina on Oahu. We lock off our timeshare in order to get two weeks instead of one week. We are not fond of the studio size room, mostly because of the Murphy bed which we must fold into and out of the wall daily. Being in our 60's, we appreciate quality mattresses, and this mattress is sub-par. Also, the kitchen area and under-counter fridge means eating out mostly. Our 2nd week, we stay in a slightly larger room with a regular bed and again, a bar-size under-counter fridge. If you prefer eating meals out, the small room and kitchen accommodations would not be problematic.

We had booked a room at the Marriott for one night prior to checking in to our resort in Kapa'a since we are members of the Mariott timehsare system. Where we actually stayed was in the new Lagoons timeshare section, which is somewhat remote from the hotel and older timeshare complex. This was a very nice high-end time share unit, much better than the old time share rooms which were carved out of the original hotel after Marriott purchased it. It has the advantage of being away from the very crowded and noisy hotel complex but is accessible via shuttles or a healthy hike. This makes it great to have all the hotel and restaurant facilities available but not obtrusive. We found the designer furniture very nice, but it needed some re-arranging to be functional. Staff were very polite and helpful, and we would like to stay longer the next time our travels take us to Kauai

Room Tip: Note that the pool is at the extreme west end of the complex, so if you are a pool person, ask for a...

The marriott kauai beach club hotel & resort was the perfect place to stay for 1 week in Kauai. First of all, the property is gorgeous, from the hundreds of koi in the pond near the lobby, to the huge swimming pool, private beach front, and perfect views. The rooms in the timeshare space are nothing to "call home about" but had all the creature comforts of home including; 2 fridges, 2 flat screen tvs (1 in bedroom and living room), couch, balcony with table and chairs, large bathrooms. The actual location of the hotel is also very good. It is located in Lihue on the east coast of Kauai pretty much in the middle of the coast. This means it takes about 1.5 hours to get to the south part of the island where the Pu'u o Kila Lookout and about 1.5 hours to get to the north part of the island where the st. regis is. My wife and I spent most of our days at the pool and always had a chair with great sun exposure, lunch we recomend going to Dukes, do not eat at the poolside bar/ restaurant, its not that good. Dukes is much better, and attached to the hotel, only about 400 feet down from the pool. Great place, hoping we can go back next year to celebrate our 1 year anniversary at this property!

We traded for a time share unit and I was a little skeptical due to some of the negative reviews I read. When we checked in, we were very concerned about the noisy ice machine accross the hall...Tip...simply have your fan on constant instead of auto and the noise is muffled from the hall and other rooms. The pool and beach are amazing. There is generally a beach volleyball game you can join in. Dukes Barefoot Bar had great happy hour from 4-6. Great burgers and other happy hour food makes for a reasonable dinner and the Hula Pie is a MUST try. WOW!

The linger longer is great if it is available. We had to move rooms but understandably so....we were in a time share unit that was being rented that night so they moved us to a hotel room just down the hall. VERY NICE and worth the $75 charge when you have a late evening flight.

We were in a garden view room but honestly, if you spend much time in your room, don't go to Kauai for vacation. The island is beautiful and we were rushed to get everything in during the one week we were there. The Mauna Loa hlicopter trip was the highlight of our trip. It is just accross the street in the shopping center with the green exterior. They will take you on a private tour for 2 - 3 people and everyone has a window seat. Go for the doors off option!! I am very scared of heights but was not scared a bit.

Great location...we spent a couple of days on the north of the island and a couple on the south. The most you will have to drive is about 1 hour to get anywhere on the island.

We stayed a week in the timeshare portion in the oceanfront Kilohani tower. We had a 1BR 2 bath unit. It had a king bed in the bedroom and a decent murphy wall bed in the living area. Much better than a regular sleep sofa.

Pros: great view, newly renovated in 2008, beautiful pool, plenty of pool and beach chairs without "towel reservations" going on, Kalapaki beach great for swimming and stand up paddle boarding, good location to explore both north and south sides of the island. Also, Duke's had good food and happy hour specials. And the Beach Hut past Duke's toward the road on the beach had great cheap hamburgers.

Cons:

Ventilation in Kilohana Tower - the ventilation in the Kilohana tower was awful. The hallway on the 9th floor was horribly musty with no windows to open and no airflow at all from the ventilation system. The first room we were given had mold and peeling paint in the bathroom (likely due to poor ventilation - no fans in bathroom only air going in/out from the non-working building ventilation). The second was a bit better but given the building itself was poorly ventilated the room was only decent when both balcony doors were open. We complained twice to the front desk about the ventilation and later in the week we could at least hear a fan running in the hall, but it wasn't much better. It's a shame as they are nicely renovated rooms. I don't know if they are cheaping out on electricity or have a larger issue. The other towers we were in didn't seem to have this problem and were ventilated and A/C'ed in the enclosed hallways.

Parking: It's not as big of an issue as some say. The first lot is about 50 yards from the lobby entrance and my guess is the furthest spot in the second further lot is less than150 yards away. But the lobby is far from many of the towers so maybe it feels further to some. We had no problem when we were just coming and going. The issue I had was there is no place to drive up and drop your groceries or beach toys near your tower. And there are no "guest use" carts available unless you want to tip the bell hop $20 every time you want to buy groceries, sodas, beer, etc. Given the size of the resort and lack of ability to drop off items near the villas there should be some complimentary carts to use to haul your groceries.

Summary - we would definitely stay again. But I'm not sure I would stay in the oceanfront Kilohana tower. The view isn't worth the horrible ventilation. The 3 star rating is for the poor ventilation in what is otherwise a great property.
