This was our first trip to Kauai. We traveled to Maui 7 years ago, stayed at the Sheraton, and had a wonderful experience. We considered staying at the Sheraton in Kauai, but couldn't justify the extra $$$ for the difference. We reviewed at length the accommodation opportunities, and after spending much time on Trip Advisor reading many other reviews and deciding what we wanted to experience on our vacation, we decided on the Kauai Beach Resort. We made this decision based on the central location, the value we were getting for the costs involved compared to other resort options, and the general rating of other reviewers who had stayed here. We reserved our 9 night 10 day (Sept. 2012) stay directly through the KBR. I spoke to an extremely helpful and friendly reservationist (Ann) who was located at the property. She reserved for us exactly what we wanted (pool side, ocean view, 3rd floor) with even more upgrades upon our arrival. She took our 1 night reservation deposit and sent e-mail outlining the room package with car rental, the amount paid on deposit, and the amount due upon arrival. When we checked in, we found she also threw in the breakfast buffet, and had given us a certificate for a free dessert for our Anniversary celebration. Upon checking out (we had a 9PM flight departure) we were allowed to extend our check out time by 5 hours. Additionally, the amount due at check-out was even less than what we had expected with all the additional amenities we received including no extra charge for the extended last day. The service and hospitality of all employees we encountered at this resort was exceptional in helpfulness and friendliness. We have traveled to many places, (we are a 60's couple), so this wasn't a first time opportunity to vacation in a resort. We consider ourselves to be experienced travelers. My husband and I realize that there are many expectations based on what is important to each vacationer. We were admittedly at times, concerned with some of the reviews regarding this resort. We can honestly say that we were not the least bit disappointed with our choice, but acknowledge that not everyone is looking for the same things in their vacation expectations.
We traveled to the North Shore and the South Shore. It all depends on what you want in your vacation. We were glad to have decided on the East Shore, as it was so convenient to any direction we chose for the day. And, with the variances in the different areas, and all there is to see and do, we were glad to not be in the extreme of either direction. We were anywhere we chose to go within 45 minutes at most. It was very convenient to the airport, beaches, shopping, etc. We were happy we chose to rent a car (included in our resort reservation), as we used it every day. This resort is not within walking distance to anything nearby. We did not find that to be a problem. Many have complained about the daily parking fee. That is waived if you've rented a car through the resort. Also, the distance to the parking lot that others have complained about... that was laughable. If that was a genuine complaint by some, they must be accustomed to not walking anywhere as the distance is not even worth commenting on.
This is an older resort, but we found it to be a positive as it seemed to retain a more Hawaiian atmosphere. On that note, it was very nicely updated with flat screen TV's, very comfortable bedding, and nicely furnished. We had plenty of room for storing our things, and didn't feel we were confined in any way. It had a nice size bathroom with plenty of counter and sink space with drawers to store items. We very much enjoyed our private balcony to relax on and the mini fridge to enjoy some drinks when not at the pool. We enjoyed the quiet atmosphere and never felt like we were on top of others when we were trying to read or converse. There wasn't the usual saving of pool chairs with towels. There were plenty of chairs, shaded areas, and various pools and hot tubs to enjoy. We found everything to be very clean and well maintained. The landscaping was well manicured and beautiful. We are beach people, and yes the beach is not favorable for swimming. This was probably the one disappointment we would say we encountered. However, we knew that this area was not favorable for swimming before booking. It has a lot of lava rock, and the currents can be strong. However, it is nice to walk along, and you can get in shallow areas to cool off. There are areas here within short driving distances to go and enjoy the water, however it would have been nice to enjoy that opportunity on the premises.
We ate on the premises quite often. The breakfast buffet offered much variety. I can't imagine what else you would want. There was an omelette station, fresh fruits, pastry, the usual hot offerings, cereal, (hot and cold), etc. To rate the restaurants with lunch and dinner fare is difficult, as it's a matter of what you are looking for. We found the offerings to be varied, well prepared, and a good value. Again, I would imagine where you live and what you consider to be expensive is a matter of opinion. We found the food was worth the amount being charged based on what we encounter in other vacation areas. We were well pleased with the dinners, lite fare offerings, and the hours of opportunity to be able to get whatever you might be hungry for. One evening we simply chose to go to the dining room to have the fresh soup and salad bar, (which was nicely presented) as we were tired after a long day and not all that hungry. There is a steak and seafood buffet offered on Sat evenings for $45 per person. It was quite good with many choices including many types of seafood, a carving station, salad, sides, and dessert.
We realize this is lengthy, but we felt the overall experience we had here was worth the comments. Of course there will be those that will find things to complain about. That's why we are all different, so obviously you can't please everyone. But, in all fairness, the things we've read on here after vacationing there and experiencing this resort for ourselves, we believe that some of these issues are made by those that just have to complain about something no matter where they go. In summary, for the value and what this resort has to offer, we were extremely pleased with our choice. The helpful, friendly attitudes of all the staff we encountered from the front desk, housekeepers, wait service, etc. was one of the things that stood out most to us. We were quite impressed with how many of the staff from the bartenders, hosts and hostesses, waiters and waitresses, would remember your name and greet you by name whenever they encountered you. There is a sign that hangs over the employee entrance that says "Through these doors walk the best employees in the world". This appreciation of their employees shows, and we commend them for what they are doing. We could have easily spent approx. $1,000 more had we stayed at the Sheraton (for example), and I'm sure that is a very nice resort also, but we got to spend our extra $$$ for other things we enjoyed (tours, etc.) and yet had a wonderful experience in a resort. On the days we chose to not venture off the premises, we very much enjoyed all this resort had to offer. We hope these comments help others with their decision as to where they would like to stay. Just keep in mind what is important to one traveler may not necessarily be of high importance to another. Again, we were very happy with our choice based on what we were hoping to experience. We were not disappointed and if we get the opportunity to return to Kauai, would absolutely stay here again.
