“Great location and tropical surroundings!”
Reviewed 17 March 2011

The Kauai Inn is situated approx 5-10 mins drive from Lihue airport. You have to drive by the docks to get to it (which made me think I'd taken a wrong turn!!) but the location and surroundings are actually very nice. We chose this hotel for location more than anything else as we knew we would be out and about everyday exploring all the wonderful things Kauai has to offer. It is about the half way point of the main highway with The Na Pali cliffs at one end and Waimea Canyon at the other. We even managed to walk to the bars and restaurants at Nawillliwilli one evening, it took about 20 mins and was a welcome walk after a large meal!

The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable and we slept very well most nights-the only disturbance being the roosters which are unavoidable everywhere on the island...!!We also had a fridge and microwave, tea and coffee were available by the pool all day and there was a vending machine for sodas.

The breakfast was nice-bred, pastries/cakes and fresh fruit-the only complaint was that it was only served between 08.30 and 09.30 which was
a) a little too late some mornings (especially when we wanted to hike and avoid the midday sun) and
b) too short for a hotel of this size-The tables filled up rather too quickly meaning that when we did have a table outside we felt quite rushed so someone else could use it.

I would definately recommend this hotel for the comfort and beautiful surroundings and location in terms of exploring the island. If I were looking for somewhere to relax by the pool I would stay somewhere else!

Whilst it was certainly a strange location when we first arrived heading through what appeared the dockyard...In reality it was a great place to explore the island from. We found the staff and whole experience excellent...if you want 5 star luxury this is not for you...if you want a friendly, well kept good value for money lodging where nothing is too much trouble you have found it right here!

A reasonable breakfast , this hotel gave us a large room with flat screen tv and the most comfortable bed of our 3 week Hawaii stay

We had room 209 which was second floor (topfloor as this is a low rise building) set in an oasis with a small pool and well kept grounds

WE hope we can revisit Kauai and will certainly stay at the Kauai Inn if we do!

We needed an easy and affordable place to stay for one night. The bulk of our trip was spent on the north part of the island and our flight was leaving so early that we decided to head towards the airport the eve of our return flight home. Kauai Inn was recommended to us so we stopped in, made a reservation, gave them our credit card # and explained to them that we wouldn't be there right at 3pm for check in. We went on our merry way, enjoyed Kauai and thought all was well. When our final night was upon us, we went to check in and they said they had "lost our reservation" and that they had "tried to call us" and maybe we should have given a "credit card # if we we're serious about booking a room". REALLY????? YOU LOST OUR RESERVATION? BUT YOU DIDN'T LOSE OUR PHONE NUMBER. HOW DID YOU KNOW WE DIDN'T GIVE A CREDIT CARD # IF YOU LOST ALL OUR PAPERWORK? We left totally confused, just then we checked our call log on our cell phone and they did call us 10 MINUTES BEFORE WE ARRIVED. We ended up spending a couple hours finding another hotel (which cost us over $200, and we were only in the hotel for about 10 hours). The staff at Kauai Inn boasts they are 4th generation inn owners and that they love their guests but they could have cared less that they screwed us out of a room hours before our flight was supposed to leave.

Dear Seattle Ladies,

We sincerely apologize for the error in your reservation made in person at our Kauai Inn. After researching and questioning our front desk staff, the only explanation we have been able to figure was that evening, our front desk person began to input your name, phone is next, into our system then guests came to check in. With a check in she closed your input, planning to return, maybe more check in's, maybe stapled your green reservation form to a guest folo. To this day all we have found is your name and phone number. Donya, our manager, said she did stay late and found you ladies a room at the Kauai Beach Resort, three miles from Lihue Airport. The room at Kauai Beach Resort was considerably more expensive than The Kauai Inn's. If you would please fax a copy of your room charge for your stay at Kauai Beach Resort, we will reimburse you for the difference you would have paid at our Kauai Inn. Our fax number is 1-808-245-3004 attention to Donya and/or Jami McKnight.
On your next visit to Kauai, we would like to offer you a 50% off discount on your first two night's stay should you give us a second chance. Fortunately this has never happened before and we now have safe guards in place, leaving a couple vacate rooms so this does not happen to any guests again. Again, we sincerely regret the stress and inconvience we caused you both. We are late responding due to our tsunami evacuation and related concerns. One of our staff had his wife and young daughter visiting relatives in Japan during the earthquake. They were boarding a ferry when the earthquake hit. They are safe and back on Kauai with a front page article in the Garden Island newspaper about them and their experience.

Sincerely,

The Kauai Inn Staff &

My new bride and I stayed at Kauai Inn for a total of 6 or so nights during our 2 week stay on Kauai. The Inn was very relaxing for us and offered a reprieve from our adventures around the island (surfing, camping ect...). The staff was very gracious and helped us in recommending snorkel spots and a fishing charter. I would definitely stay at the Inn next time we are on island.

The owner got greedy and changed my price when I wanted to change my reservation. The hotel policy says no penalty as long as changes are made more than 72 hours before arrival but the owner got way too greedy and ignored her own policy. I made the reservation through her because that way, she said saved her 25% on agents commission. Be careful when dealing with Jamie Knights, the owner of Kauai inn.

Aloha Hashen,

We are sorry for you continual dissatisfaction regarding your 21 day reservation booked in October with Jami McKnight. Your original reservation was a King room for two adults plus a crib for your twin babies. You had received a sale rate which was on Expedia in October. All guests are told about The Kauai Inn's 3 day prior to arrival cancellation policy, plus it is in our email confirmation.

The morning of your call to change your reservation, our manager, front desk person and myself attempted to accommodate your 3 day change, arriving earlier than scheduled and cancelling 17 nights. The Kauai Inn has been running 97% fully booked, thus we did our best on a few day notice to upgrade you and your family to a double room with a lower rate than commerical or Kamaiiana with no change for the crib. When I spoke with you last, you were going to call us back. You did not call to cancel and we held your room for your family with a crib set up on your scheduled arrival date.

We at The Kauai Inn do hope you and your family had a wonderful vacation on our beautiful Island of Kauai.

Sincerely,

The Kauai Inn

This is a truly lovely hotel. Well looked after. The rooms were larger than average, with a very comfy king size bed, refridgerator and microwave. The breakfast of fresh fruits and breads was delicious. It is quiet and secluded, and about a mile away from the town of Nawiliwili which is where the small beach, bars and restaurants are situated. (This for us was the only downside). The town of Lihue, where the address says it is located, is another few miles away. This was a little misleading. The staff were very friendly. The hotel had internet, but it was a little temperamental.
