Koa Kea was absolutely amazing. It was recommended to us by Denise Perkins at The Tropical Travelers. From the moment we stepped out of our cars we were treated like royalty. We were greeted in our room with a bottle of champagne. The hotel room was beautifully decorated and seemed to have every gadget you could ever want or need when staying away from home. L'Occitane toiletries were also a plus. Red Salt restaurant was delicious, but a bit pricy. Tuesday-Saturday the hotel offers an alternative with freshly rolled sushi, some of the best sushi we've ever had! Outdoor area is beautiful, the beach is not great, but it is a very quick walk to beaches just aside of the hotel. All beaches in Kauai are public so you never have to worry about stepping on a private beach. There is a nice lawn area next to the pool and bar with very nice chairs where you can lay out if you don't feel like going to the beach. Such a wonderful place. Thank you Denise at The Tropical Travelers for the recommendation!

This was the last of the three hotels on our two week Hawaii vacation. Did we save the best for last? Yes and no....
Yes, for modern decor, personable staff, and convenient location.
No, for room size and beach access.
We arrived on the " day of the hurricane " , so the pool area was not set up and the beach bar was closed. We were given a room upgrade from garden view/ground level to second floor/partial ocean view ....no one was housed on the ground floor because of flooding concerns.Although this upgrade was much appreciated, a complimentary welcome cocktail would have helped take the edge off a stressful arrival! We seemed to be the only guests in our wing during our entire 5 night staying so our visit allowed quiet and privacy. We had dinner at the on premises restaurant Red Salt , a pricey choice but not a good time try and find other options due to the storm. My meal was an excellent offering of Ono , a local fish, but my husbands pork chop was less than stellar. The service was polished and the setting lovely.
When the pool finally opened after the storm passed the setting was perfect, plenty of big fluffy towels, enough lounges and umbrellas and a sunny ocean facing lawn area . However, beach access is not perfect:you need to use a small rocky path to the neighboring hotel or take a boardwalk stroll to the overcrowded Marriott property next door.
The staff is professional and friendly . No waiting on line for front desk/concierge help, everyone is more than ready to answer a question or book an adventure . By all means, follow their recommendations. We found all of their choices to be top notch.
We really loved the cool low key atmosphere of this beautiful boutique hotel.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms may lack privacy.

We avoid the large hotel chains where possible so for our stay on Kauai decided to go for this small hotel. We made a good call , from the time we arrived until departure we enjoyed the ambience / style and particularly the attitude of the staff. We had booked an ocean front room which was very well designed with a good sized bathroom etc. The front desk staff were extremely helpful in assisting with booking tours / restaurants etc. and the valet parking guys were good fun. There is a small pool but the beach in front is very small but it is easy to walk either way to bigger / better beaches. For drinks / casual food there is a small bar kiosk close to the pool.
Overall an excellent small hotel with great staff.
My only comment would be that the main restaurant - Red Salt which is excellent is inside with no Al Fresco dining option which would be complete the whole package.
Not cheap but would recommend as the best hotel option in Poipu

Room Tip: 2 Ocean Front blocks , the block to the west ( we were in room 247 ) is likely quitter as not as clo...

This is a lovely and quiet resort with impeccable understated modern tropical decor. The staff is full of smiles and try to remember your name and itinerary, and the building and grounds are impeccably maintained. The well-heeled clientele are low key and respectful to each other. I appreciated that the staff was trained not to hint for tips.

But I can get those qualities at a great four-star boutique hotel. When I stay at a 5-star boutique hotel I expect the type of individualized, impeccable service you can't get at a large resort, since you aren't getting the amenities a large resort can offer (multiple restaurants, a great beach, sports facilities, perhaps music in the evenings).

The car valets are wonderfully welcoming and were always cheerful and helpful. We arrived too early, so had to wait in the lobby for 3 hours before a room opened up. When it was available, they took us to the room and then left, but did not explain how to work the room or the hotel schedule which is why I always thought they take you!

Housekeeping was inferior. They kept forgetting to replace our toiletries so we ran out of bath wash even though I called to remind them to restock it. They did not clean out our shower stall for three nights even though we asked them to. We asked for slippers and they were not brought for 2 nights. The carpet was not vacuumed for 3 nights. I called the front desk and they were more than apologetic but no one ever followed up to make sure they were done. The bed mattresses were already sagging and not particularly comfortable.

Frankly, none of these things impacted our enjoyment of our trip at all, but they are representative items that "the extra polish" you would expect to justify a 5-star hotel rating and price were just not here.

The location is okay, but is not directly on a usable beach. We were on the ground floor. Particularly if your room balcony does not face the inner garden, the gardens are not very pretty and sparsely planted;,definitely get a higher floor to avoid looking at the lack of ground plants.

The Red Salt restaurant on the premises is definitely trying to provide some creative cuisine in Kauai, but failed to impress us. I got the macadamia nut covered port chop; the nuts were in large chunks and overwhelmed any other flavor.

The breakfast buffet was extremely limited, but it was still convenient to have breakfast on premise and prices were very reasonable. "Full breakfast buffet" was the continental buffet with the addition of ordering any single a la carte item from the menu.

We would not stay here again and we expect to stay at the Grand Hyatt next time.

Room Tip: Avoid ground floor rooms, awful looking landscaping

We just completed a 5 night stay at the property in late July and are very pleased with our decision to spend a little more on the Koa Kea after the reviews here on TA. The room was wonderfully quiet, clean, and comfortable and we were glad to catch the tip on here about requesting a higher floor. We called about a week before arriving to request that and were given an Ocean View room on check-in that was on the third floor internally facing the pool/courtyard and as close to the ocean as you can get without the upgrade to an Ocean Front. Spectacular 180 degree view of the ocean and the sunset over the Sheraton across the beach.

This was the first leg of a four island, two-week trip so the onsite coin-op washer/dryer came in very handy (another great tip on TA). On that note, of the four hotels we stayed at on this trip, including a Four Seasons property, this was our favorite. Although we opted to hang with the locals at Kalaheo Cafe, Da Crack, and some other great restaurants on the east side for meals, the onsite restaurant looked good and was always full. If you get the chance to visit during Summer, do the Na Pali tour leaving from the North Shore (only operates during the calm season), regardless of it being an hour drive from Poipu. We’ve done the tour before on the big ocean cats leaving from Port Allen and it’s an entirely different/better experience.

I loved this hotel! The staff was kind and always seemed to be on top of your needs. Quite a few days, the room was cleaned TWICE!
The bathroom was beautiful marble and white, very modern look to it.
The room itself had a coral/beach theme like the name of the hotel. I would highly recommend coming back here if you like a quiet atomsphere and a modern look to your hotel.
The only downside is the bar was extremely pricey (pool side) with drinks being $14 and up.

This place is 10 stars, not 5!! Words alone can't express how my husband & I feel about this hotel.... So far we've only been to 5 different countries, stayed at approximately 17 different luxury hotels across the U.S. & other countries and the Koa Kea is ranked #1 on our list so far. This PLEASANTLY small Boutique hotel is right on the beach, has beautiful rooms w/the most comfortable bed you'll ever sleep on (seriously, I tried hunting down & buying the same mattress), perfect pool, EXCELLENT restaurant/food, and the service is ridiculously OUTSTANDING!!! No lie, the service at this hotel is the absolute BEST I have ever witnessed.
FYI: this perfect little hotel is FOR ADULTS/grownups/couples aka NOT kids, not even teenagers. This place is awesome for a truly rewarding relaxing experience, please do not ruin it by bringing kids!
Attention Koa Kea: THANK YOU for NOT adding a slide to your pool or any of those big resort shenanigans! :)

Room Tip: This hotel is for adults (not kids) so if travelers stick to this agenda and keep this hotel quiet...
