What a wonderful place! We had Unit C110: a ground floor three bedroom/three bathroom poolside villa… But poolside in name only ~ which delighted us immensely. Located farthest from the pool and in the direction of Poipu Beach, this building (one of six poolside villas) was perfect because only lawn and open space filled our view to the Southwest… no other units in the way, and thankfully not as much noise from the screaming children in the pool. We could walk out on our lanai with a glass of wine and enjoy the grass beneath our toes and a nearly unobstructed view down the hill toward the sunset.

Kudos to Ann and Tawni who were so very helpful with our reservation. They answered all our pre-reservation questions so quickly and then provided a discount car rental code which saved us a bundle on our SUV for the week. Unit came complete with coffee filters for the coffee maker, dish soap for washing up pots and pans, laundry detergent for the occasional wash, and beach towels. Beach chairs, noodles, and boogie boards were all available from the clubhouse. Bathroom soaps and shampoos were hotel-sized, so be sure to bring your own.

Only a few minor complaints. Most notably, the amount of foot traffic noise that could be heard coming from upstairs renters was more than insignificant. We assume they weren’t trying to be noisy … but with wood floors, you have to know that just walking around is loud. And half the time we were vacationing, there were little kids upstairs – prone to running around before their bedtimes. Oh my! Thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-thump……

Finally, the unit as a whole is great. But the cleaning crew or general maintenance crew, for which you’re charged a very pretty penny, should be conscientious of some much needed repairs: burned out bulbs; loose curtain tie-backs; kitchen knives which need actual sharpening, not just steel-straightening; lack of candles in case the power goes out (which it did while we were there); missing television from one of the bedrooms (cord was just hanging out of the middle of the wall??)…. Just odds and ends that makes this a 95 instead of 100, for what that’s worth.

Previous reviews have the property pretty well covered in all its nice aspects. I did not encounter several of the negatives that others have described and will comment on those first. We stayed in a second floor unit. The top unit was occupied, and the overhead noise did not bother us at all. (I can imagine if there were a bunch of kids it might be a concern.) A previous poster said that the lanai was small, and I am sure that he or she was talking about one of the other developments because the lanais here are the best I saw of any of the condos at Poipu. There was plenty of room for six people to eat around the table, along with a couple of lounge chairs and plenty of extra space. I also loved the quality of the furniture they had out there. We spent a lot of time out there and I don't expect to find a place with better lanais. Finally, the pool was perfect for us. I guess if you are used to very warm water, it would feel chilly, but being from Seattle, we spent a lot of time in the pool (an outdoor pool is such a treat to a northwesterner) and found it completely comfortable. I also thought the spa temperature was perfect.

VPK was almost perfect for us. I loved the large amount of space. We were there with my parents and two children, and never felt even close to cramped. I loved the plantation house architecture which was perfect for throwing open the windows and letting the tradewinds come through. We don't like air conditioning, and were never even tempted to turn it on. (mostly we wondered why anyone would prefer it to the amazing cool fresh outside air.) And this is where our only problem lies. With the windows open, we heard the air conditioning compressors nearly round the clock and especially at night. I'm sure if we had windows closed and were using the air conditioning it wouldn't have bothered us. Our particular unit had five compressors out one window and then five more on the end of the next building out another. There were just a few running, and I can't even imagine how loud it would be in the summer when it is warmer and the place is more booked. As I walked by other complexes along the greenbelt, I envied how quiet they were, and then when approaching VPK, I'd hear the constant hum from a distance.

I think this is going to be my biggest challenge in finding a place to stay on Kauai in the future because all the lovely new places have a/c. If it weren't for this, we would certainly return to VPK. I am sure that very few travelers would mind this (no one has ever commented on it before me, after all), but wanted to let those like us know.

Aloha annimag,

Thank you for taking the time to share with us your comments. We're so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. We think our architecture and spacious accommodations are unique in the islands and we're proud to offer air conditioning as one of our many amenities.

Thanks, too, for addressing some of the concerns posted by other guests. We've installed rugs in many of the rooms, reducing the noise level others had mentioned. The lanais are the biggest on the island, and many people mistakenly refer to other properties in their review, so we appreciate you commenting on both.

You may be interested to know that we have carefully considered your comments regarding the air conditioner noise. Although no other guest had ever mentioned this issue, we've determined that it is a valid point and we are in the planning stages of moving the air conditioner processors to the opposite side of each building to reduce noise.

We've also contacted a new energy-efficient manufacturer of smaller, high capacity processors which are almost silent. These would reduce energy costs for us and provide a better overall guest experience.

Thank you again for your review mentioning this concern and encouraging us to become even better at what we offer to our guests. We look forward to welcoming you back for another stay with us the next time your travel plans include Kauai.

Mahalo and Warmest Regards,

Gary

We recently stayed at the Villas for 7 nights. We stayed in D300, 4 bedroom on the top floor.

First of all the customer service for the complex was great, we were upgraded for free when another group wanted to stay in our 3 bedroom an extra week. The check-in is seamless, the grounds are well kept and the pool was great for a condo complex (including all day sun, this is a big deal if you have ever had to swim in a pool which is covered by shade half the day.) Our elevator stopped working and was fixed with a call within hours. The beach gear is in well used but functional condition, I loved that it was free and self serve.

The condo itself was made up of large bedrooms, multiple full bathrooms, dual location AC control and 2 decks. The kitchen is high end, it is showing some wear, the dishwasher stuck a couple times and the fridge needed a deep clean but overall no complaints. The decks themselves were nice but didn't really maximize the views (the bedroom had the only ocean view) and on the top floor the solid railing require you to stand to really see the scenery unless you are really tall. The living area is smaller but comfortable.

The beach is why you come to Hawaii, while it's walkable, it's more than 5 minutes unless you speed walk. On average it took us about 15 minutes to get down to poipu beach with 2 kids, longer coming up.

Overall, if you are staying in a condo on the south shore the Villas at Poipu is a great option. The pool exceeds condo expectations, the room is great, the views are pretty good, the walk to the beach is ...well a walk.

Room Tip: Great for families. We had a 4 and 8 year old and a grandma.

Several couples rented a 5 bedroom villa in Kauai last summer and were not disappointed. A fairly short walk to the pool and hot tubs made this a good resort however we'll likely pick a location nearer the ocean.

We spent the first week of April at The Villas at Poipu Kai B 210. The villas are spacious and well appointed. I loved the kitchen, beautiful and had every gadget you could possibly need. The rooms were large and uncluttered, we had tons of room to spread out. The master was delightful! Large bathroom and closet (we put a pack-n-play in the closet for the baby and had plenty of room for clothes & suitcases). It was great to have access to all of the beach toys, boogie boards, bags, etc. No problem with parking by our unit. Grounds are beautiful & well maintaind.

My only complaints/concerns were lots of scuff marks on the walls & it felt like the floors were always dirty. (Small things, I know, but I am a mom) The noise from the pool was loud at night we discovered that many folks were using our pool and staying at other places. We could hear the people walking above us, that was very loud so bring ear plugs. The walk to the beach is beautiful and the green belt is fun to run around with the kids. I did not take into account that it is a down hill walk & that returning was more difficult with a little one. No ocean view, I thought we might have a slight distant view, not from this unit. I know these are small things to be concerned about when you are on vacation. I did tons of research & planning (traveling with extended family, toddler & 9 year old) but this was things I wanted to know.

Room Tip: If you want quiet stay away from the pool & on the top floor

First let me start with the good:

We stayed in a 4 bedroom condo and the we loved the layout/amenities in the rooms. We cooked the majority of our meals in the room and loved the kitchen. Had everything we needed (exluding food of course) The bedrooms were nicely decorated and comfortable. We had 3 balcanies and each had a nice view. One of the balcany had a really nice ocean view as well. really nice to have an elovator do directly to the room. Never seen that before.

Now for the bad:

-The AC did not appear to be working properly so each room was really cold.
-Becuase this conplex has plenty of kids, the pool area is active early in the morning. If you don't have kids and like sleeping in past 7am, this may not be the place for you. We also noticed that a fair amount of people who use the pool are not guests of the hotel. Each day we say unsupervised kids cross the street from another complex to use the pool.
-10am checkout time. We were able to get an extention til noon, but since most flights are in the afternoon, the 10am checkout can be a real inconvenience.

Room Tip: try to stay on the top floor and away from the pool. Heard lots of noise compaints.

We stayed in a 2nd floor 3 bedroom/ 3 bath unit and totally loved the accommodations. The attached pictures tell the story. The only thing we didn't like was how noisy the villas were. Every morning around 6:00 a.m. we were woken by the hyperactive kids above us running around their unit and on a few evenings people sitting outside on their patios drinking could be easily heard. These units have zero soundproofing, so if you're looking for peace and quiet these villas could be a problem depending on the occupancy. Really liked the storage room where you could get beach gear (chairs, boogie boards and umbrellas)on your way out. The Plantation Gardens and Roy's were our favourite restaurants. Parking was plentiful and always available.

Room Tip: Stay on the top floor!
