Owner description: NTBG’s Allerton Garden Garden is located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

We toured the Allerton Gardens during a break in the rainy weather last week. We were delighted to find that the guided tour was an entertaining and relaxing way to spend several hours. Allerton Gardens is composed of a succession of outdoor "rooms", each with it's own unique theme, story and setting. Intertwined in the experience is the fascinating and eccentric story of the Allerton Family. The tour can accomodate most fitness levels but be prepared to natural paths which may feature uneven ground, slight hills and mild descents. Our guide was knowledgeable and kind. If you tour, please consider bringing the following: water bottle, mosquito spray, and sturdy walking shoes. Several reviews have commented on the costliness of the tour ($35). After the tour, the fee seems a bit more acceptable because one realizes the sheer amount of work it must take to maintain the Garden as well as the mission of organization which is to preserve and perpetuate the wide variety of plant life found on the island.

These gardens are by tour only(visit the McBryde if you don't want to be on tour). You take a 20 minute bus ride to the garden location and the total time you are gone is about 3 hours.. Ryan was a great guide, very knowledgeable and fun. Keep in mind this is not a flower garden, but has some of the most beautiful areas with foliage and water features. My favorite was seeing the trees from one of the Jurassic Park movies. Many other movies were filmed there. Entrance was $35.

We thought this was a bit expensive at $35 each for a two and a half hour tour, but decided to try it. We were very pleased. The gardens and water features are amazing. Also, the bamboo area was very interesting. I liked the statues also. You take a bus for a few minute ride from the visitor center to the actual garden and beach areas. Then you are walking for a while till the end when you board the bus to get back to the visitor center. We used bug spray but still were bitten by mosquitoes. A bathroom is available only at the beginning and end of the tour so plan accordingly. We loved the views from the bus ride overlooking the area on the way to the walking part of the tour. I do recommend the tour.

Being from IL and having been to Allerton Park in IL, I wanted to visit the garden in HI. The tour was very good but could have very easily been self guided and a bit shorter. I work in the landscaping field and enjoyed the tour a great deal but my husband was slightly bored with the tour. I could have done and seen many of the things in a time frame that fit his interests if it were self guided. That being said, our guide was very informative and allowed us to sample several of the fruit from the orchard. A fun surprise addition to our tour.

Walking distance from the Lawai Beach Resort and the Spouting Horn. The Allerton Garden provides a tour guide with both walking and bus travel. An interesting mix of exotic plant life and fruit-bearing trees, which are sampled by the tour. A little expensive, but, remember, you are on Kauai, The Garden Isle. Highly recommended.
