Owner description: NTBG’s Allerton Garden Garden is located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

Definitely take this tour! The Banyan trees alone are worth the visit. Our guide was wonderful and let me lag behind to take photos which I appreciated. It's a special place, almost magical.

Allerton Gardens is so fantastic. I frequent Kauai often over the years and I have been to the gardens about 4 times. It is exquisitley beautiful with its plantings, sculptures, and pavilions. It is nothing short of magical with its large exotic trees (part of the original Jurassic Park was filmed here). You can clearly see how this was the favorite vacation spot for Hawaiian royalty. Absolutely wonderful and highly recommended.

Allerton's Gardens 2.5 mile walking tour is a hidden gem past the craziness of Spouting Horn. When living on the island in the 70's we used to scale down the cliff and sit on the beautiful beach, once a Hawaiian Village. The tour now is very upscale with a A/C bus ride in and our tour guide was from New York...BUT he did a great job and is a scientist in his own right. He had great knowledge of all the plants, will tell you what is native to Kauai and what is not...he did a fantastic job. I think his name was Matt. Mr. Allerton traveled and the gardens are sprinkled with wonderful marble statues from Europe and the waterfalls in the gardens are exceptional. If you take the evening dinner tour you will make it down to that beautiful beach but the regular guided tour does not take you there. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it highly. It brought back my youth on Kauai when things were free and the beach was an easy climb down the cliff.

A garden preserved by Rob Allerton who created this “Art” garden for his enjoyment and now for the enjoyment of everyone who visits. Each garden room has specific instructions for the caretakers to ensure each room looks the same in perpetuity. Each room is designed to guide your eyes either up to the canopy or to the sides of the room to successive trees. Since he couldn’t paint, he used the landscape as his canvas.

Situated in the fertile Lāwa‘i Valley previously used as farmland, the gardens are now preserved.

We visited 8 rooms including the Thanksgiving room, Diana Room, Golden Bamboo, Cascade Room, as well we saw the Moreton Bay Fig Tree, made famous in Jurassic park.

Many movies are filmed here, but few other events are allowed. Truly a unique place, a must see.

We toured the Allerton Gardens during a break in the rainy weather last week. We were delighted to find that the guided tour was an entertaining and relaxing way to spend several hours. Allerton Gardens is composed of a succession of outdoor "rooms", each with it's own unique theme, story and setting. Intertwined in the experience is the fascinating and eccentric story of the Allerton Family. The tour can accomodate most fitness levels but be prepared to natural paths which may feature uneven ground, slight hills and mild descents. Our guide was knowledgeable and kind. If you tour, please consider bringing the following: water bottle, mosquito spray, and sturdy walking shoes. Several reviews have commented on the costliness of the tour ($35). After the tour, the fee seems a bit more acceptable because one realizes the sheer amount of work it must take to maintain the Garden as well as the mission of organization which is to preserve and perpetuate the wide variety of plant life found on the island.
