“Unit #214 - Clean, Close to the Pool, and you can hear the ocean”
Reviewed 9 July 2014

This unit was perfect for our family. Close to the pool, full size washer/dryer, and a kitchen with everything you need. Two bedroom, two bath (two king beds). You can walk to the ocean, to the Hyatt, to the tennis courts.

I highly recommend this property. Would stay here again. Clean, well kept, great location.

My wife, two boys (16 & 18) and I stayed from 6/22/14 through 7/5/14 in unit 123 at Poipu Sands and we could not have been happier with the accommodations.

THE UNIT: This two bedroom, two bathroom condo is located in a building that abuts the street to the rear and has a view of the pool (50 yards) and ocean (1/4 mile). The back bedroom has windows that face the street, but our boys didn't report it to be noisy. The from bedroom faces the water. There is no air conditioning, but the breeze was strong enough every day and night that there really wasn't a need for air conditioning. The unit has plenty of closet space and has a washer and dryer. The master bathroom has a walk in shower that could fit six people, a toilet (in a separate room with the shower) and just outside the shower/toilet room door is a room with two sinks and a makeup table. There is no door to this room and it leads into the master bedroom, but can't be seen from the master bedroom because there is a closet in the way. A hair dryer is included, The master bedroom has a king sized bed, TV, two end tables and a dresser. There is no lack of drawer space and there are two full closets. The living room has a work table, a couch, two chairs and a TV console. Wi-fi and cable TV are included. There is a dining room table that is just off the living room and just outside the kitchen. The kitchen is a glorified galley kitchen, complete with stove, dishwasher, microwave and plenty of utensils, plates, glasses, etc. There is a large outdoor, open porch that can be accessed from the master bedroom and the living room. The back bedroom has two double beds, end tables, a dresser and two full closets. The back bathroom has one sink and a smaller walk in shower. The unit was clean, the beds were comfortable and everything in the unit was in working order. The only problems we had were (a) water pressure in the shower was kind of low, (b) once you run out of the toilet paper/tissues/garbage bags that are there when you arrive, you have to re-stock them yourself and (c) if you want the unit to be cleaned while you are there, it costs $88.00 per cleaning.

THE GROUNDS: Immaculate. The pool is centrally located and it is only open to people who are staying at the Sands. You need a key(provided) to access the pool. The pool is also immaculate. There is a single, unlit tennis court next to the parking lot that is played on a first come, first served basis. Again, you need a key (provided) to access the tennis court.

THE LOCATION: Poipu Sands is located on Pe'e Road, right next to the Hyatt and Shipwreck Beach. The walk from unit 123 to Shipwreck Beach is less than 5 minutes. Brennecke's Beach is almost exactly one mile away and can be walked away. Shipwreck Beach is really a surfing beach and the water is fairly rough. Brennecke's Beach is much more sedate and has better snorkeling. There isn't that much in Poipu, except for beaches, hotels/condos/rentals and restaurants. There are two main, tourist based shopping plazas and they are two and five minutes away from Poipu Sands by car. The closer one, Poipu Shopping Village, has a general store in it, along with a bunch of restaurants and shops. The one that is a little further away, Kukui'ula, just opened a few years ago and has more high end dining and shopping opportunities. I walked to the latter one every morning and it is less than 3 miles away from Poipu Sands. Koloa Town is about 4 miles away. Staying in Poipu puts you in the middle of Waimea and Wailua and guarantees you the best weather on the days you stay in Poipu.

LOCAL ACTIVITIES: Surfing is good almost any place you go on the island. You've got your pick of golf courses within three minutes of Poipu Sands. We payed Kiahuna three times while we were there. Kiahuna is the least impressive of the three local courses, but the fact that it is in Hawaii and not in New Jersey means that it is impressive enough. And that is especially true when you factor in how cheap it is compared to the other courses. As noted above, there is one tennis court at Poipu Sands, but there are also an additional 8 courts at Poipu Kai (a five minute walk) where you can pay to play. The snorkeling in Kauai is only fair when compared to places like Belize and the Cayman Islands, but there are enough fish and enough sites to keep your interest.

ISLAND ACTIVITIES: We (1) kayaked up the Wailua and then hiked through muddy trails to the falls with Kayak Kauai (ask for Forrest as your guide, he doesn't shut up the entire time, but he really, really knows his stuff and he really, really engages the people on the trip), (2) went water skiing and wake boarding in the Wailua River, then spent the rest of the day visiting Hanalei Bay and points north, (3) hiked up and down the Waimea canyon and then visited Hanapeppe -go on a Friday night, they have outdoor food offerings and artists, (4) drove out to the remote Na'Pali coast beaches ad spent the day, (5) took a one hour helicopter tour of the island from the Lihue near the airport, (6) took surfing lessons at Poipu Beach by the Sheraton, (7) snorkeled all over the place (8) went horseback riding at CJM Stables and (9) took an ATV tour of the Kipu Ranch. There wasn't one thing that we did that we didn't enjoy. But we enjoyed the helicopter ride, water skiing and kayaking the most. Everything, except the snorkeling, is very expensive.

FOOD: Ate at the Dolphin at Kukui'ula for a lunch and a dinner (really expensive, but fabulous), Tomkats in Koloa Town for dinner (awful), Pizzetta - twice - in Koloa Town (expensive, but very good), Keoki's Paradise at the Poipu Shopping Plaza (expensive, not as good as it should have been), The Shrimp Station - in both Waimea and Kapa'a - for lunch (50 bucks for the four of us and I had a garlic shrimp dish that was the best meal I ate in Hawaii and my boys told me that the Shrimp Burgers are off the charts good), Puka Dogs in the Poipu Shopping Plaza for lunch (delicious and different, not that expensive), Bubba Burgers at Kukui'ula for lunch (great, greasy, freshly grilled burgers and fries), Poipu Tropical Burgers at Poipu Shopping Village (OK, nothing special), Kalaplaki Joe's for both lunch and dinner (better than expected, quite frankly, and not so expensive) and got coffee and breakfast every morning at the Living Foods Market (great, but expensive).

NOTES: 1. If you book your condo at Poipu Sands through Suite Paradise, make sure that you keep them abreast of your arrival time. The Suite Paradise office closes at 7:00 pm, so if you arrive later than that you'll need to make arrangements to pick up the keys. Their office is about a half mile away from the complex, down by Kalapaki Joe's on the main road. 2. Unit 123 has boogie boards, beach chairs and an umbrella. They give you beach towels and bathroom towels to use while you are there. 3. As soon as you get there, you'll need to shop for food and sundries. Go to the Big Save in Koloa Town. It is only a five minute drive.

Room Tip: If you want to be closer to the Ocean, choose a room in the 400,500 or 600 buildings.

We travelled to Poipu Sands with our family of four and stayed in Condo 313 which was ground floor. Poipu sands is part of the Poipu Kai resort. I'll break my review up into a fed different sections.

Layout
Condo buildings 100, 200 and 300 are the first properties in and closest to the pool. Condo buildings 400, 500 and 600 are towards Shipwreck Beach and further from the pool, however only by 60 metres.
There are communal BBQ areas between the 300 and 400 block and also a BBQ in the pool area.
The grounds are immaculate.

Pool
The pool is a good sized very clean pool accessed by a security key meaning if you don't stay here you can't swim here. There are some fairly strict rules at the pool, however most people are tolerant if you are behaving. There are plenty of sun lounges to use.

Condo 313
I think we got the best condo. Ground floor meant we had direct access to the wide open grassed area behind the condos. It also meant we had direct access to the pool (50 steps).
The condo appeared new, it was clean and obviously well looked after by the owners.
This place had everything :
Wi Fi
Cable
Boogie boards
Snorkels
Tennis racquets
Beach chairs
Cooler Bags
Games for the kids

This was a home away from home

There was plenty of cutlery, crockery etc, a brilliant ice/water fridge (going to go and buy one now) washer and dryer and plenty of seating. Outside is sun lounges and another table.

If you're looking at renting a Condo in this area look no further than 313.

We stayed in unit 425 and it was perfect for our family! We loved having the upstairs to ourselves while our 2 teenagers shared the room downstairs. The unit was nicely furnished and met all of our needs! The grills on site were a big bonus. We loved the location and the view. We would highly recommend this condo!

We loved ...
- the poipu location right beside the grand hyatt and nearby shopping at poipu shopping villange and old koloa town
- the comfortable beds including the air mattress bed (kids slept on)
- the mirror outside the lanai which reflected the oceanview at the dining room
- hawaiian artwork
- ukelele / guitar
- available guidebooks, and other books
- generous supply of beach mats, chairs, snorkels
- nice cross breeze
- sturdy cutlery and plates

A few minor improvements:
- sharper knives as we used the kitchen a lot
- more beach towels and guest towels
- newer pillows and more pillow cases

But most of all.... BIG THANKS to the maintenance dude Randy, security lady Naomi and owner Bill for responding quickly with my predicament when I locked my purse inside the condo on our way to the airport (and keys were inside the condo).

Thank you for your helping me in my time of need.... ALOHA and MAHALO.

Kauai is such a beautiful place ... drive up the Waimea Canyon and take a helicopter ride with Blue Hawaiian to see the Na Pali Coast.

Another tip ... if you are arriving at night, it's advisable to bring a gps since the highway/roads are very dark and the signage is poor.

1 bedroom Garden view with loft which is in need of an update.
Upon arrival Ice maker was not working and after repeated attempts of repairing still no results. The en-suite off the master bedroom toilet was not flushing and and water continually running. One suggestion to make this suite more appealing would be replace the bed coverings with something that could be washable. The kitchen is very dated (old cabinets) and old tile on counters, difficult to maintain cleanliness. The staff have been attentive and friendly though unsuccessful.

We have enjoyed vacations here in this condo complex for over 30 years starting with our own kids and now our grandkids. We have stayed in over six different units and have enjoyed all. We have our favorites and prefer ground floor units. Most units have a great ocean view, however some of the view was spoiled when a badly designed mega condo complex was built in the ocean side. That poorly designed timeshare thing should never have been approved. The other distraction is the Hyatt Regency which was built after Poipu Sands. It dominates adjacent Shipwreck Beach, but is only visible from the 400 condos. It is also a nice design and blends into its environment with thoughtful architectural design.

What is nice about our condos: well maintained lush landscaping with lots of open space lawns, a nice private swimming pool, tennis courts, clean and functional gas barbecues, close parking, well furnished and upgraded condo units, great walking paths, walking distance to nearby beaches.
Be advised that adjacent Shipwreck Beach is unsafe for kids and only OK for surfers and expert swimmers. It is fine for playing in the sand and watching surf. We see sea turtles and whales almost daily.
Poipu Beach is a little farther away but walking distance and it is family friendly and has lifeguards.

If possible rent from owners or their agents. Avoid resort management company that up changes all sorts of things like choosing which unit you prefer.
