“What a fabulous place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2008

What a fantastic stay. The condo was clean, well stocked with necessities: shampoo, dish soap, body soap, etc. Everything I needed to cook the fabulous Hawaiian food. Although there is no AC, we only had about 1 hour of a 6 day stay that it got stuffy, and that was the hour right before one of the short rain showers. The layout made it like home, the furniture was new and comfortable, the maids are spectacular. (they deserved my daily tips).
The roosters will keep you awake, but that's everywhere you go. Roosters are even in the roadway medians. A trick is to go flush them out, right before bedtime. Someone said to just walk around the side of the condo and they will go elsewhere. Unfortunately, we heard that advice on the day we left.
The condo wasn't as close to the beach as I'd have liked, but, we also paid for the garden view, not the beachside. But in the end, we were extremely happy where we were placed as, we were the end unit of the whole compound, so we never heard a car door, etc.
I couldn't think of one thing I'd suggest to these operators. It made our stay so much better than a hotel room, just to come back in the evening, kick off the shoes, sit on the couch or Lanai and sort through the day's photos or brochures. What a vacation! I will be back... not just to Kauai, but to the Outrigger.

  • Liked — Quality of furniture, layout of condo, extensive supplies included, like wine openers
  • Disliked — the roosters, but that could only be solved by sealing myself in a hotel room.. no way.

First, this property is not a hotel; it's a condo development. Each of the units (1 or 2 bedroom condos) are privately owned, but they are rented out and managed by two on-site property management companies - Outrigger and Castle. We just returned from a five night stay. We booked through Castle because they had better rates. You can, however, book directly from an owner and save about $100 a night (try a vacation rental by owner website).

The grounds at this development are amazing. There is a cactus and orchid garden that shouldn't be missed. Also, there is a fantastic (and huge) lawn that is studded with palm trees right on the beach. It was so great to go for a swim or snorkel and then rest on the lawn away from the sand. There is a stand right there that provides chairs and towels to guests.

The best meals we had on the entire island (way better than the Beach House) was at the Plantation Garden restaurant. It's not "resort food", nor is it run by the management companies; it just so happens to be on the property. Anyway, reserve a table on the veranda, and the food and drinks will not disappoint. Do not miss the appetizers; one night, we made an entire meal out of them (shrimp tempura, roast duck spring rolls, ahi sampler). Also, don't miss the passion fruit cheese cake. Our server suggested it, but I didn't have high expectations; I was very pleasantly surprised - it was amazing (although, you can skip the Baked Hawaii). Another great reason to eat here is that they source all of their fruits, veggies, and herbs locally. Great food, good practices, and fantastic ambience - you will not be sorry. But please do have realistic expectations about service. We saw several couples (from the East Coast) get bent out of shape when things were a little slow or the service was not perfect. You are in Hawaii, so relax and go with the flow.

Becasue the condos are individually owned, their conditions vary wildly. While the exteriors and grounds are well maintained, we saw a variety of interiors as we strolled by open doors. Some units are immaculate and well decorated, while others, like the unit we were in, could use a bit of updating. But in the end, it doesn't much mater, because the location is great, and the beach is amazing. It's a real gem, in that it's good for swimming, snorkeling, and beginning surfing. Many of the beaches on the island are too rough for swimming, but this one is great.

We stayed in unit 171, and it is in need of some maintenance and updating. It was, however, very clean, and the housekeeper did a great job of tidying on a daily basis. You will need to do your own dishes, which is fine (there is a dishwasher). We read many reviews that advised us not to stay in a Garden View unit because of the road and construction noise; we paid one third more for an ocean view room, but it was a waste of money. We didn't spend a lot of time in the condo, and we didn't hear any construction or road noise that would have been a problem. You might, however, hear children yelling or playing, as we did the last few nights after a family moved in below us. It's a familiy-friendly condo not a convent, so it was to be expected.

One final note - the pool, hot tub, and tennis courts are located across the street at the tennis club. It's an easy walk or drive, and we went there once. There were lots of families there using the waterslide and the sand bottomed shallow end. It seemed ideal for that purpose. There is an open air restaurant there, Casa Blanca, for drinks and snacks.

Overall, we were very pleased with our stay, and we will probably stay here again and book directly with an owner to save some money and get a unit we really like.

We stayed in a Royal Garden unit in this condo complex. Compared to other condos in the area this one was small and dark. The whole row of buildings abutted a very busy road and there was a lot traffic noise. On the first night we were awoken by car alarms three times. One does not have to leave NYC to experience this. However the worst aspect was the small, dingy bathroom that smelled like an airplane toilet after a long transcontinental flight. The smell contaminated the whole condo. We kept the door to the bathroom closed and stuffed towels underneath the door. We asked, we plead, we begged to be moved but were told nothing else was available at any price. We ended up leaving after two nights, having endured so long only because it was difficult to find other accommodations at the last minute.

If you are staying at the Kiahuna Plantation the next few months, be warned that there is significant construction noise (beeping front end loader backups, heavy trucks hauling, jackhammers, etc) going on at the east end of the property at the old Poipu Beach Hotel. This goes on from 8:00 AM to 5:00PM. I would check with the property if you have Ocean View or Ocean Front reservations to stay away from buildings 1 thru 10. You will be paying big money for a construction zone experience. Other than that, our experience has been very good with a great unit, good housekeeping, and immaculate spacious grounds with great views of the ocean. We had an internet connection problem when we checked in and they had a new modem in the unit by next day. If you plan to be out of the unit from 8-5 or aren't bothered by extraneous noise please disregard this warning.

We just returned from a 6 night stay in Kauai at the Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation. The grounds were very beautiful upon our arrival and thought that our "garden view" room was very small but bearable. The carpet in our room was very dirty. The utensils in the kitchen that sat on the counter were covered in thick dust, during my bath I discovered that the whole bottom of the shower curtain was covered with mold. The electric stove burners were very crooked making frying almost impossible. The bedroom door was broken (off the track) and the straw that broke the camel's back was when we pulled out the bed in the couch and my guy pulled back the linens. A baby sock jumped out of the sheets on to the floor. This told me that the linens had not been changed. I didn't say anything to my guy at that time because he would of been furious at that point. Some things the hotel can not avoid-all of the kids screaming all day until "quiet time" at 10pm and how you could hear everything that everyone was saying in your bulding or around your building. This is an establishment that appears to welcome children, so if you have a family with children that are staying above you, don't expect any peace and quiet.
Seeing that we arrived to Outriggers on a Saturday, our complaints about our accommendations could only be heard by the lonely front desk clerk because the manager did not work on the the weekend and there was nobody else to talk to. We waited until Monday and when the manager was still not there at 9am I called my travel consultant who then took over to find the manager and voice the complaints. Later, Monday evening, there was a message from the manager on the hotel voicemail. She went on to say, "Well, you did book a garden view room, but I see that you have several complaints. I have 2 options for you if you can give us a call." My 2 options were to move to a royal garden view or pay $30 per night extra for an ocean view. My travel consultant was upset and told me the manager was not very nice to her either. The manager told her that the only reason she had returned the call is because my travel consultant had called so many times. The manager went on to ask her, "Do you realize it is a holiday and I am at home?" "Why are you calling me? You should be calling housekeeping." Anyway, I told my consultant that I would go ahead and pay the $30 per night for the oceanveiw which was much better in cleanliness than the previous garden veiw. At the checkout we were told that the room was actually $130 per night extra-but that is another article.

What a nice stay. Our one bedroom ocean view condo was updated, bright, clean and well stocked. Large covered lanai where we watched the sunset. Great expanse of beach and helpful staff. The Sheraton and Marriott on either side provide additional meal options and the Marriott has a small convenience store.

Be aware there is a big difference between ocean front and ocean view. Ocean view has a good view of the ocean but you are a ways back from the beach.

The only downside is that there is no pool on the main property and therefore near the ocean. Guests have access to the pool across the highway at the swim and tennis club.

  • Disliked — No pool on the main property

Stayed here for a week with a group of 12 or so for my wedding. It was 2 or 3 to a condo and we were in building 15 unit 80. We enjoyed our stay and found it to be as pleasing as the year before when we stayed in bldg 11. The grounds are great and the beach is nice with a perfect location (dry in the winter) The value is excellent (we booked VRBO) with castle managing. I went through all 5 of the units everyone had rented and they were all clean and well kept. there is nothing bad I can say about these units. I would definately stay again. With that said it is a completely different experiance than staying in a neighboring hotel at $400+ a night. You may want to pay the additional daily maid service if you are used to the clean towels sheets etc.. or you may not (we didn't). We had the Plantation gardens as our reception site and it was EXCELLENT!
