Owner description: NTBG’s McBryde Garden is located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this outstanding garden, known for its diverse collection of tropical plants. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

The Gardens were very beautiful and had a lot of things to offer. We didn't take the tour, but found the grounds very lush with a lot of plants native to Hawaii and some that we hadn't seen before. We took a lot of photos and maybe next time will take the tour.

This is an amazing beautiful garden set in the Lawai Valley. It did look real, but a Hollywood movie setting (which it has been). We enjoyed the wide variety of plants, especially the native Hawaiian plants area. It is a nice change of pace in Hawaii to take a walk thought a beautiful forest setting, one I did not expect in the normally dry Poipu area. We were happy that our entrance fee is supporting a worthwhile cause.

One item to pay attention too is that that the tram only comes by once a hour so we cut our visit a little short to not miss it. Also, if the tram driver offers you an umbrella, make sure you take it. Most paths are not paved and we got caught in a downpour.

I arrived to late for the tours of the gorgeous grounds but took advantage of the great gift shop! Many beautiful items made by local artists.

Get on the little trolley and travel along the road past Spouting Horn until you reach a gate at the end of the road. It opens to the glorious vista of a cove with a perfect beach - sorry but you can't. But travel farther and enter an enchanted forest of flowering plants. You will want to bring water, a good hat and maybe some mosquito repellent. Thank you Mr McBryde.

**good points:
- nice bus ride with beautiful views
- the grounds are well kept
**so-so points
- had to wait 30 min for the shuttle to the actual gardens
- not as much information about plants provided, not as interesting
- wandered around, felt like there was no direction even if it was self guided
- finished walking around after only 1 hour
- no student discount, not sure it was worth the $15

probably better to do the guided tour and see more!

Thank Martha M
