“Lovely stay”
Reviewed 8 February 2009

Just returned from 2 weeks in Poipu at Poipu Shores. This is the second time we stayed there and we love it.

We were on the second floor and the unit was lovely - extrememly well stocked kitchen (way more than any condo I've ever been in). We had great whale watching from our Lanai.

We were there 4 years ago and since then the facitiy did a few improvements - tiled walk ways and pavers by the pool. The facility is "older" and on the outside not very glamorous. I remember my first impression was of an aging motel, but like others have said, it's in a great setting, is clean and many of the units seem to be being upgraded so I think it's a very good value for the money

I agree with other posts that the pool area is small and a bunch of kids would overwhelm it - but that suits me. The neat thing about the pool is the view of the water - - you are on an overlook of the rock and surf. Hard to beat that.

The only downside to me is that you can't really get a late checkout on the day you leave - 12 is normal, if you're lucky, they'll give you til 1. With flights back to the mainland usually being LATE - mine was 9:35pm. , I wish they could be more flexible ....or I'd love if they would even install a shower room so you could hang out at the pool till mid afternoon and then change there. But - I guess that is wishful thinking!!!

Overall, at this point, I'd never stay anywhere else while in Kauai.

  • Liked — The setting
  • Disliked — They could spiff it up a little - and charge a lot more - guess we shouldn't tell them that!!!

We stayed in Poipu Shores 103A in December 2008. It was a 2 bedroom/2bath condo that has been recently updated. This unit is on the ground floor. The outside lanai is about 40 feet away from the ocean. It is rocky and not accessible there but the view and proximity was great. We enjoyed the sounds of the surf.

This nice thing about the location of this condo is it is close to the beaches but you also don't feel you are quite in the thick of the hotel crowd. It is more of a quiet setting. The unit had all the amenities you would expect. TVs, wireless internet etc.

For beachgoing, there are sandy beaches within a short walk in either direction. The closest beach is Brenneke beach (5 minutes walk) and beyond that 10 minutes walk or so are large sandy beaches in front of the Marriot/Sheraton.
The other direction is the beach in front of the Hyatt (Shipwreck beach). That is about 15 minutes walk. We preferred the beach down by the Sheraton. If everyone isn't into the walk you can drive close to it but parking is an issue so I would drop people off and then walk myself.
Our kids enjoyed using the pool at the condo.

We made a good use of the kitchen and also the barbecue area. If you are going to cook, stock up at Costco in Lihue and supplement with groceries from Big Save. Big Save is close to Costco.
All in all, very positive about our experience at this condo and Kauai.

Stayed at Poipu Shores 106A for eight nights. Great place to relax. The sound of the surf is amazing. When a wave hits just right, it literally sounds like cannon fire. It is just an easy five-minute walk to Brennecke beach, which has perfect waves for boogie boarding, and just a couple more minutes beyond is Poipu beach.
The kitchen is really nice with relatively new appliances. The living area and bedrooms are very comfortable. Before we left, I was a bit worried about a potential bug problem with the unit being on the ground floor, but that really turned out to be a non-issue.
Very clean and well-appointed!

We LOVED your condo 103A! It was equipped with everything that we needed - a washer and dryer, a nice kitchen with plenty of cookware, beach supplies, to name a few. We will certainly recommend it to friends and family, and we hope to return soon. It was also in the perfect location for relatively easy access to sites, stores, and restaurants. A car is a must on Kaua'i, though! As for complaints about the waves being too loud from other reviewers, we say that they are crazy! This was wonderful, and daily "swim-bys" of dolphins and turtles were icing on the cake.

We spent a week at Poipu Shores and loved it. We only saw dolphins once but spent the week staring at the turtles and the ocean crashing on the lava rock. The Condo overlooked the pool and Poipu Beach. Even though Poipu is considered crowded, the location of this condo was away from traffic but still close to the beaches. The back road/driveway to the beach made beach access easy. The waves crashing on the lava rock outside the condo was definitely loud but I loved the sound and slept peacefully through it. However the clerk said many guest complain about the ocean noise! There was plenty of room for the six of us. The condo was up to date and very clean. I'd recommend it for anyone but small children. The pool is small but the waves crashing over the railing into the pool made up for that.

  • Liked — the ocean view
  • Disliked — minor items..dishwasher didn't work..light burned out..etc.

I have to be honest: we arrived at Poipu Shores when it was dark, and our first impressions were not great--sort of like a grandparents' worn-out condo in Florida. But we opened all the windows to get some air moving, and we could hear the ocean crashing on the rocks outside our windows.

The next morning we woke up to a rainbow over the ocean. The rocky shoreline was maybe 20 feet from our window; I could roll over in bed and see only water. This is possibly the best location on the island--on a point on the south shore where in the morning we watched whales spouting as they made their way out to sea, and in the evening we watched the sun set over the water.

Even though you drive through a crowded condo neighborhood to get to Poipu Shores, once you're there it feels like you're more isolated because you're so close to the water and on that point.

The pool is very small; we only used it once because we were out exploring the beaches of Kauai. We were traveling with friends, and we had five teenagers between us. If they had wanted to spend more time at a resort pool, this would not have been a good choice because it is so small and less crowded than bigger resorts.

The island itself seemed more crowded, with more traffic, than when we had visited a couple of years ago. But we still enjoyed its beauty, especially the beaches on the west shore, the Na Pali coast boat tour with Liko Kauai Cruises, and kayaking on the the Wailua River to the "Secret" Falls (which aren't exactly secret, but swimming under them was a thrilling experience).

We would certainly return to Kauai, and maybe spend more time at Poipu Shores, just enjoying the view.

We just returned from Hawaii. We got married in Kauai. Our accommodations were at Poipu Shores 103A. The property is oceanfront. The sliding glass door opens up to grass where you are greeted by the surf of the Pacific Ocean 10 footsteps away! Unit over looks water with volcanic rock beneath. Sea turtles are always swimming right there! The swimming pool is also built on a cliff supported by the rocks. As you are swimming in the pool you are overlooking ocean at same time. Enough on the view, it's incredible! The unit itself is newly remodeled very tasteful. It is beautiful. 2 br/2ba. Beds/bedding are all new. We slept sound every night. A plus is the master bedroom has a/c. This is a rare amenity in Hawaii. Otherwise the unit has ceiling fans which work just fine. With the winds constantly blowing the unit was never uncomfortable, evne in August. Area is very quaint and quiet. Great area for walking and running. Breckens Beach is a 3 block walk. Located in the old town of Koloa, shopping and restaurants and activities are close by. Full size galley kitchen with new appliances. Washer /dryer. We cannot say anything bad about this unit. We look forward to our next visit to Poipu Shores 103A If interested go to:

ps. My parents stayed at Kuhio Shores 119 (same renter, same site mentioned above) It was just as awesome and handicapped accessible.

  • Liked — Comfort, cleanliness and view
  • Disliked — Parking is limited at certain times of the day, but there are always spots, may not be the closest.
