“Call in the exterminator & locksmith”
Reviewed 5 January 2008

This is a small, oceanfront, condominium complex with units rented directly from owners or through realtors. We booked Unit 304 from December 24, 2007 - January 3, 2008, through Poipu Connection Realty.

Sadly, this particular unit should be avoided until some major maintenance items get taken care of. Most problematic, the kitchen area is SWARMING with cockroaches. They were in all the cabinets - including the higher level ones, the oven, the dishwasher, and the storage closets. We had to go out on Christmas Day in search of roach poison to keep the little buggers in check. We're talking dozens, and those are just the ones you can see. There must have been hundreds behind the woodwork. The realtor told that the unit was visited by an exterminator every three months. Time to increase the visits or change exterminators.

Next biggest problem is that the screen door to the lanai (deck) has had its lock broken off and cannot be secured. We were told by the realtor that the owner had "elected not to repair" this door. Without any safe or secure place to leave passports, money and valuables, etc., going to the beach or on a hike becomes a lot less enjoyable. The screen over the kitchen window had been pried out of its frame, and that window also could not be locked. But if you opened the window, mosquitos would get in through the ill fitting screen.

There were many smaller problems that we could live with, but which showed a real lack of concern about upkeep. It's sad that the owners of this million dollar condo (an adjacent unit is for sale priced at $999,999) cannot keep up with basic maintenance from small matters like changing the batteries in the smoke detector, the tv remote control, and the answering machine to fixing a broken shower head in the master bath. One of two toilets was also not working on arrival, but somebody did come to fix that on the second day of our stay.

Kauai is a true paradise, and other units in Poipu Palms may be in much better condition. But unit 304 is not the place to have a fully enjoyable holiday, at this time.

We stayed in unit 104 for aweek in early May. This was our second trip to Kauai and not our last. While we enjoyed our accommodations the first year, our stay at Poipu Palms has become our reference point for a perfect vacation. The condo could not be beat, and the view could not have been better. What a magical place! If we could make a living on Kauai we would relocate tomorrow, this is how staying at Poipu Plams made us feel. If you want a quiet romantic place to stay you will not do better anyplace in Kauai! We will return to Kauai and we will stay at Poipu Plams.

From your front deck you can watch the turtles and dolphins swimming right below. Just off shore, humpback whales swim by, especially early in the morning. This is a very quiet complex, so if you are looking for lots of action, this is not the place. Great place if you want a romantic getaway, or a deck to sit and enjoy the view. Condos 101, 102, 201, 202, 301, 302 are set back from the shoreline about 20 yards. For the best view condos 103, 104, 203, 204, 303, 304 are right on the ocean edge. The condos are very comfortable, with all the amenities you could ask for in this type of setting. This is not a 5 star hotel, just a great place to kick back and relax. We would go back in a heart beat!

Stayed at Poipu Palms #103 for one week in January, 2006. Found reviews at this web site and decided on trying this condo community. Could not have been happier. This unit is literally 100 feet from the ocean. Wake up/go to sleep hearing the sound of the ocean. This particular unit is pushed out in front of the others so you literally cannot hear/see other units. Clean, bright, well designed condo. Every closet in stocked with something you could think of needing. Pool is not for swimming as it is way too small. Views at sunset are to die for! If your looking to be pampered like at the Hyatt, don't stay here. If your looking for a nice place to stay, reasonably priced, close to everything condo, unit #103 is your kind of place. Thanks Kevin, plan on coming back soon. P.S. a room A/C would be a welcomed addition.

Was there in December--unit 104--we watched dolphins and whales--if you want to see turtles--it is the best place. A full moon was there.

This was a great place for watching whales. Saw them breaching--it was a nice place overall--it could use some upgrading--the carpet was way past the point of shabby--the furnishings marginal. But what we cared about was the great location. If you are looking for an upgraded space this is not it--this is not the Hyatt.

The texture in the carpet was soo worn out it was sad--if the owners would put forth some bucks to match the million dollar views--it would enhance the value. I watched the guy next door in 103 upgrading his unit--granite--new fixtures--I would suggest that is the place to stay.

We booked #104 for our honeymoon in early to mid-August 2005 (7 nights) and had a great time. The condo complex is located at the top of a rocky shore with a sparkling view. Our unit was in the front overlooking the ocean and the pool, and I don't think I could beat the view or the amenities. Our unit had a washer/dryer, which was great because we could pack lighter and still have fresh clothes. Few buildings on Kaua'i have air conditioning, and while the condo had many fans, it would have helped to have some cold air blowing in which to relax in the mid-summer. That said, I would go back in a heartbeat.

Make sure to avoid the restaurant (Brenecke's Broiler or something like that) on the beach at Poipu - very overpriced and food is not very good at all. The best meal we had on the island was Pomodoro's, which is outside Poipu.

Absolutely fanstastic!!!!!!!!

We booked two weeks here during Sept 2004 immediately prior to our wedding. What a beautiful place, quiet and very relaxing

The condo was on the ground floor (#103?) and was a 2 bed/2 bath unit. It was rented via the owner and was spacious and very well appointed. The welcome pack contained coffee, fruits, Macademia nuts, cookies etc.

The unit we were in was not a/c, however being so close to the ocean and with ceiling fans it was not needed.

The lanai overlooks the ocean and the small pool and is relatively private. The pool is quiet due to there being only 12 units in the complex (we were the only people in the pool most days). The pool is located on decking directly next to and above the ocean. Expect to see turtle feeding on the rocks below the deck, most mornings at breakfast we were treated to large pods of dolphins swimming by. There is no beach access from the complex, however Poipu beach is only a few minutes walk/drive.

Plenty of good quality restaurants nearby (not really walking distance though)

Overall a great location, great accomodation and the chance for a bit of dolphin spotting (if you are lucky) We will be back soon
