“Great Resort”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

My family and I stayed here for 7 nights and it was wonderful. The grounds are 5 Star Resort quality. The pools and beach are perfect for a vacation. The staff was always attentive and happy to respond to our needs. The food was great and at least 5 restaurants to pick from. After a few days, it can hit your wallet hard though.
Be sure to rent a car as you can explore to the island's beauty. You can also drive 15 to 30 minutes to find a wide range of places to eat.

Room Tip: Ocean view will make a world of difference.

Green Features: The hotel is eco aware. They have recycle bins in each room.

Was not quite sure what to expect of this resort given the size of the place and number of rooms. We were very pleasantly surprised. Huge grounds, superbly maintained with great ocean views from most rooms. The room itself was slightly dated but in good condition. The pools are very nice. Everything worked well and we had a great 4 days.

We spent 4 wonderful days at this beautiful resort in June. On arrival the open air lobby just took your breath away. The grounds are amazing, the staff so welcoming and our room was lovely. We were very close to the lobby on the 3rd floor which we found made getting around the resort very easy. The breakfast was very enjoyable and varied. It was school holidays when we were there and although the resort was busy it did not seem overcrowded at all. The green turtles and monk seals at Poipu Beach were the highlight of our stay. Hopefully one day we will be able to return.

Hawaii resorts are starting to be ridiculous w fees. Portage, resort fee, cabana fee, valet, parking fee...This is a gorgeous property-lush and nice, but we have been a few times over the years for conferences-garden room =parking lot view, which is finw since that is where we park, we dont eat on property much since its pricey and ehh...service ehh...concierge good and access to fun stuff is great. When kids are young-resorts with ammenities and slides are great-as they age-hmmm-maybe a condo? I want more than an average room w shower over a tub and parking lot view for the prices paid in Hawaii. Spa and pools are excellent here

Room Tip: ocean view may be worth the spend-spa is GREAT here

We spent the final three nights of our Hawaiian vacation on the island of Kauai (earlier stops on Oahu & Maui), and you could say that we saved the best for last. The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa is a remarkable property where you immediately feel relaxed upon walking in to the open air lobby. The view looks out on to Poipu bay and the sound of the ocean tells you that you have arrived in paradise. Our rooms were spacious - two rooms for a party of 5. Plenty of room to stretch out. We were on the 3rd floor which allowed easy access to the pools, lagoon & beach.
Speaking of which, the grounds are SPECTACULAR! Plenty of connected pools with lush landscape surrounding you. We had no difficulty finding beach chairs at several different times during the day. There is a winding slide which our kids enjoyed. The property also has a lagoon (sand bottom) which we enjoyed swimming in. The beach is very close by, offering substantial waves to the surfer and boogie board crowd. You could easily spend every day soaking in this "nirvana".

Room Tip: Third floor room faced the parking lot, but the landscaping was so beautiful that you never saw it...

Green Features: The hotel offers the opportunity to refill bottles from a water filtration unit located next to the ice maker. Nice service to bring chilled water down to the pool!

Lush grounds surround the property. Beautiful water features. We were in awe! The pool areas are many, and always a chair to be found even though the hotel was full. As a 50 year old that had never been down a water slide before, I can say it was a highlight! We went over and over! The lobby is beautiful and we absolutely loved visiting with the birds in the mornings! Our room was pool view on ground level with easy access to the adult pool and beginning of the lazy river. Be prepared to walk! The hotel is sprawling! We felt lucky to not be way out in one of the wings. Not great for anyone with trouble walking up hill and long distances. The self parking lot is a hike too, but we felt it was all good, as at least we got lots of steps in the day! The salt water lagoon is awesome! Our room was spacious and clean. Housekeeping, specifically Angie, did a fantastic job everyday. The lotions and shampoos were great! We had mani/pedis in the salon and both our nail techs were great! My nails still look good! Food at every restaurant we ate was all good. The summer rolls at The Dock among my favorite. Dinner at Tidepools was to die for! Breakfast buffet everyday was part of our package and did not disappoint. Several items changed daily keeping it interesting. The beach is not that great to swim, but we enjoyed watching the surfers. Take the short hike up to the top of the point at Shipwreck. Crazy folk jump off it into the ocean. I was tempted, but no go. The resort is in the best location. Short drive to shopping and activities. The entire staff were helpful, gracious, and friendly. We will come again and I can't wait!!

Room Tip: We liked being central, ground level and could walk out to the pool.

We are repeat visitors to this hotel, and this review is for a trip we took in January 2014.

One of the nice things about returning to a luxury property is having the hotel honor your room requests, or at least tell you up front if they cannot.

Since we were traveling at a "peak" time, and I know the manager of the Hyatt by name, I asked him if he could accommodate our room request during this busy time. If not, we would return to a nearby condo that we have used before. We were assured via email that our request would be honored, but when we arrived, we were taken to a much lower class of room. As with the poster below, the hotel first argued that this was the room we booked. Thank goodness for the internet - I showed them the emails from the manager and room reservations.

The manager was on vacation - astonishing over the holiday, peak week - but the assistant manager did acknowledge, eventually, that we were given a room that was about half the cost of the room we had paid for. She also acknowledged that we had been assured in writing that this would not happen, or that we would be forewarned if it was. Unfortunately, there was nothing they could do other than adjust our rate.

Beyond that, the hotel was not able to manage the capacity holiday crowds. There were problems throughout the hotel and more than one exasperated guest was seen more or less losing it at the front desk.

I will say that the bell hop staff was absolutely a pleasure to deal with regardless.

After a few sleepless nights in our room overlooking the "party" section of the pool (instead of the direct ocean front we had paid for), we checked out and went to the Marriott. That's right - I did a hotel flounce and left, which I have never done before in 20 years of extensive travel.

Interestingly, while the Marriott Poipu makes no claims to 5-star status and lacks the "wow" factor of the Hyatt, its location and staff more than make up for it. The ocean front is true ocean front, on one of the best beaches on Kauai (vs. the Hyatt's attractive but unswimmable Shipwreck Beach location). It was lovely to sit at the outdoor cafe overlooking the stunning beach and be charged $13 for a burger instead of $17, as our kids played in the lovely clear water. The staff goes out of its way to accommodate guests. The Manager was not on vacation!

Stand Up paddleboarding, surfing and snorkeling are all available there, again unlike the Hyatt where you can do none of this.

While the Hyatt used to be a 5-star property, and continues to garner great reviews, I would be shocked if it continued to maintain its market share with so many better options now available throughout the islands. Its lack of a swimmable beach and inability to honor reservations should give pause to anyone visiting beautiful Kauai. Stay at the Ritz, or the attractive Marriott. Or try something different and rent a place down by Anini Beach (if it's not winter) and get a bit more of the real Kauai vibe.

Aloha Daisynyc,
I'm sorry to hear of your disappointment with your stay with us. I know that it gets very challenging to accommodate all room/bedding requests (i.e. connecting rooms, 2 beds, etc) when we are full and I'm sorry we were not able to meet your expectations. I'm glad you were able to enjoy your stay on Kauai.
Aloha, Diann
