I had the BEST hotel experience of my entire life last weekend when my husband and I stayed here for our babymoon last week! I've never had such white glove treatment and from every staff member we interacted with. It's sad when you're surprised or delighted with good service these days but it is hard to come by. I was blown away with the kindness and attentiveness of the staff here. I seriously felt like we should have paid more to stay here. The grounds were beautiful. The pool area is amazing. The food was great and the service was out of this world! I can't say enough great things about this place!!

I've thought long and hard how to write this review. The hardest decision I made was whether to stay at the St Regis or here. We opted for the Grand Hyatt.

First let me say the location is perfect. This REALLY is the sunny side of the island. When it was raining everywhere else it was always sunny in Poipu. That was a definite highlight.

Our initial impression of this property was it was too big for what we usually like. Check in was smooth and our room was ready within about 30 minutes. We paid for a Deluxe Ocean View Room and after staying in the same room type at the Fairmont Kea Lani in Maui the week before we were utterly disappointed. The view we were given was not good at all. We were on the 5th floor and could see a little of the pool and some ocean through many trees but just not worth the money! One of our favorite things during vacation is to sit on our balcony and enjoy a bottle of wine each evening. We were really unable to do this most of the trip because the balcony we had was not very private. It was really upsetting. When we laid in bed all we saw was other balconies and people looking in on us because of where we were located. So we were forced to shut the curtains many times. It was disheartening. However we didn't complain and just dealt with what we were provided.

The room itself is very comfortable and adequate for what we required.

The resort itself is really beautiful. The grounds are very lush and the pools really amazing (albeit we only used them for 45 minutes the day we were leaving!). The lobby is gorgeous, especially when they have the musicians playing.
The beach is nice but alas with so many choices on Kauai we didn't use it once except at sunset. Its pretty fun to watch the surfers in the evening!
DO NOT miss the hiking trail that begins on this beach. It is truly amazing. We hiked all the way to the Caves and it was really nice. Gorgeous views! Bring lots of water and sunscreen!
We did eat at the Italian restaurant, Donderos. The food wasn't very good. This is in comparison to some amazing restaurants on this island. It was our first night and our appetizer was overcooked and entrees just weren't what we expected. The service was just adequate. Because of this experience we opted to cancel our last night at Tidepools to dine elsewhere.
Breakfast was included with our stay and we really did enjoy this each morning. There is a large buffet and omelet station. Get there early or it gets pretty busy.

We used the concierge many times and each and every time we used them they were very helpful. They had some very knowledgeable people that were always in a good mood.

We actually loved the vendors in the lobby they brought in each day. They quality of items were amazing. So that was always nice as we walked to and from our room.

We worked out at the gym and besides the long walk getting there the gym was well equipped and really nice to use.

The parking is a little bit of a hassle. The lot is HUGE! We opted not to use valet and self park. It’s quite a walk especially if you get one of the last spots. 2 of the nights we couldn't find parking anywhere in the whole lot and they allowed us to Valet at no cost which was nice. We are young and in good shape so the walking didn't bother us but may be bothersome to others.

So why the 5 star review if we didn't like our room or view, the food wasn't perfect, the resort was a little too big, etc? Well that's the funny thing. This place just grew on us. Kauai is such a beautiful place. We were up before 6am every day and out the door as quick as we could to hike and explore the whole island. We did end up spending several of our days up around the Hanalei area because it really is so gorgeous, but honestly we were very delighted when we got back to Poipu. We just loved the location. There are so many great restaurants right around the hotel. There are groceries, shopping and other amazing beaches so close. We also loved how we were about halfway in between Hanalei and the top of Waimea Canyon, both taking about 75 minutes to drive.

We try very hard to withhold judgement until the end of any trip and this time was no exception. Yes our first impression was a little disappointing especially coming from the amazing Fairmont on Maui. We sure would've loved a better view from our room and more privacy, but in the end it didn't deter our vacation. As the week went on we started to appreciate this property for what it was. Yes its big and crowded, but its also really beautiful and always sunny! There is an amazing golf course across the street. I played 18 holes late in the afternoon in less than 2 hours and was back in my room in less than 10 minutes! Also, the staff throughout the entire property were all very delightful. Overall, its just a really nice, happy place to visit. Yes there are faults but not enough to damper any visit!

Finally, I cannot compare this to the St Regis. We went there a couple times and that property really is the epitome of a 5 star resort. It feels much fancier and upscale. However, some people may not want that. I do know when its sunny in Hanalei there isn't any prettier place on the whole island. So if you do choose to stay at Grand Hyatt make sure you do sunset on the outdoor terrace at the St Regis one evening. It is truly spectacular!

We hope you find use in this review. Bottom line is if you do choose the Grand Hyatt you

Room Tip: Deluxe Ocean View may not be worth the money
