“Big Disappointment”
Reviewed 16 May 2013

We were really looking forward to our first return trip to Kauai since we had been there for our honeymoon, but were very disappointed in our stay here. The view was fine and the pool was fine, along with being relatively close to a small beach and park. The rates were fine. Unit was well worn, towels smelled bad, and dishes, glasses were quite old and dirty. The place had definitely seen better days. But you get what you pay for I guess. Dealing with the not-so-bright owners of the place was probably the biggest letdown of the whole trip. I would steer clear of this place.

Unit 302 was a great place to stay. Mike from R&R realty, the manager of our condo, was friendly and very helpful while we were there. The view from the lanai was outstanding. We could watch the whales and sunsets from the Lanai. Best for couples, although our son had no problem sleeping on the fold out couch. Easy walk to the beaches and restaurants. The kitchen was a bit outdated, but the rest of the condo had been updated (bath, paint, new wood floors).

THE unit is Unit 501. view down the beach, up the beach and of the mountains and Niihau. The 2 br, 2bath unit is comfortable, charming, and the kitchen has every ketle etc you would ever want. The rental agency is Kauai Vacation Rentals and the price is a bargain.Provides secure internet cable TV and phone. If you look at the picture of the SUnset Kahili it is the top floor unit on the far right. There are lots of books about Kauai, its plants, whales (which you can watch from the lanai) and general flora and fauna. It is light and airy and an absolute joy.Short walk to Poipu beach

Room Tip: If it is available 501.. upper floors more expansive views

We enjoyed staying here for our 20th anniversary. Everything you need to feel at home. The view and distance to the beach is amazing. Only one other condo between you which you are taller so you can see right over it. We picked out dolphins in the water one morning. So enjoyed the pool and the quiet accommodations. Parking is great and you can walk to the beach for a swim or your morning walk. Would definitely recommend to anyone! Only downfall is no Wifi unless you go downstairs in the lounge area. But hey your on vacation not supposed to be online right??

Room Tip: there isn't a bad room, I would prefer to have one on 3 to 5th floor for the view of the ocean.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in April 2012. Unit 301 has an ocean view from the master bedroom, living room, kitchen and balcony. The unit had all the comforts required for 2 adults and 2 kids to stay 2 weeks. The sound of the ocean and birds were very relaxing. We found the ceiling fans adequate for cooling with all the doors and windows open.

The building was built in 1969, so it is a bit dated, but well looked after and clean. The pool is cleaned every day as are the common areas of the building. There is assigned parking within the complex. Suite 301 shows its age, but is comfortable. The 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom layout served us well.

It was great to have our own full-size fridge, washer/dryer in the suite and patio furniture on the balcony. The price is reasonable for the accomodation. We got alot of use out of the pool.

What we really enjoyed was the location. We could walk to shops, restaurants, beaches and gear rental places in 5 - 15 minutes. It is quiet with amazing views. During our stay we saw Spinner Dolphins, Sea Turtles and Whales all from the suite. It is good value for the money. I would not hesitate to stay there again.

Room Tip: I would recommend 301, 401 or 501 for the spectacular ocean view and 2bdrm 2 bath layout.

This was our fifth visit to Kauai, our first being in 1999.
We stayed at Sunset Kahili on advice of family who have stayed (and were there when we were there) in unit 203. Unless we were to book 203 we would not stay at this location again.

One positive note: 506 has an unbelievable view of the ocean and the sunsets during the winter are fabulous from the lanai.
I wish we had read up on trip advisor before we went to Kauai, so we would have known to expect the "king" bed to actually be two twins pushed together. Such a disappointment, and unfortunately really affected our sleep.
The photos on the rental website look fantastic, and the unit really isn't all bad, but the first experience with the bed was not good. The furniture was extremely dirty, and there were a lot of stains in the carpet. The drapes have rust stains on them, and the window louvers on some of the windows would not open. The towels smelled bad (dirty dishcloth bad) from the day we got there, and we bought washing soda to try to get the smell out, but once they smell like that... there just isn't any going back.
Halfway through our vacation, the washing machine broke down and we were only given the option to use a coin-operated laundry facility in another complex, which we were not about to do. Who wants to babysit laundry on vacation? They could not have another washing machine in for three weeks, because the owners wanted the same machine as before and their particular model was not in any stores on the island.

We have not yet received our deposit back, so I cannot tell you if we have a fight on our hands or not. We did not do any of the laundry on our way out (obviously), but all the supplies in the condo are still there, and we did not move any of the furniture (one of the rules - if you move the large furniture and do not put it back where it was, you will be charged!)
Not the best experience we've had in Kauai with the condo.
Kauai itself was, once again, magically paradise, and we did enjoy our vacation immensely and will be going back as soon as we can. We just won't be staying in this property ever again.

We had stayed at the Sunset Kahili in September 1985 in either 206 or 306; we can't remember which. When we decided to return after 26 years we thought it would be fun to stay at the condos again.

To start off, I'd say our stay was kind of strange as the unit and building were much like we remembered it from our last visit. Not much had actually changed. It was as if a new episode of Magnum PI would be on the TV that evening. The unit itself was clean, well maintiained and amply supplied with all manner of items we needed to make our stay just like home.

The old style TV was small by today's standards and the bed wasn't really a king but two smaller ones pushed together. The cabinets could stand an update and the carpet had a couple of stains. Nonetheless, we loved the unit. The quaint charm mixed with the wonderful ocean views, complete with palm trees swaying and turtles swimming by below along with panoramic views of the island from the kitchen window made new memories for us at the Sunset Kahili.
