“Sunset Kahili #506”
Reviewed 22 January 2010

We loved this spot. This is an older five storey building overlooking the south coast of Poipu, fabulous views from the lanai over the water and views of the mountains and rolling hills to the north out your front door and kitchen window. This unit has been recently renovated in a tropical island style with lots of fun touches. It was very spacious, lots of storage, full kitchen including a washer and dryer. This unit is rented for two. The bedroom is separated by shoji doors from the living room. A large bathroom with lots of picnic extras in the closets, books, beach mats, chairs, beach towels, really everything you could want. Very quiet, staff and residents all friendly. Assigned parking spot. We stayed here for a week renting through Poipu Beach Vacation Rentals/Kauai Vacation Rentals. It was perfect for us and in a great location. Beautiful spot to watch the sunset every evening.

Unit 501 SUnset Kahili has the best view on Kauai and is the best eqiupped 2br, 2 ba condo at the Kahili. Quiet, comfortable, well furnished and you sit on your lanai (or even in the unit)and watch sea turtles, whales and dolphins. Often looking toward the mts you see the island's Waialeale. Those dolphins(a huge pod) swim by everyday.. Spinner dolphins. 2 blks from the beach(Poipu and Brennekes) and you look right at t them along with views of Niihau from the unit and lanai. Kitchen is well equipped, can wald to great restaurants.. Perfect condo

Stayed here from 9/15 to 9/22. Rented from Kauai Vacation rentals, who left the fans on and some goodies in the fridge. The condo was well thought out, with a comfy bed and plenty of storage space. Full stove in the kitchen and a full size refrigerator. Lots of cooking equipment . View from the lanai of the ocean. Very quiet complex which was fine with us.You have an assigned parking spot. The work on the building was only from about 8 to 4 or 5 weekdays. Being from the East Coast we were up by then. Easy walk in the morning with our coffee to see the turtles near Poipu Beach.
Some negatives with the unit. Needed some refurbishing like new new curtains or curtain rods in the bedroom. Needed blackout curtains to keep the sun and heat out during the day. Think you could get a better view from higher up. Pool closed at 8pm, which we thought was a little early.
All in all the condo was in a great location and the grounds are immaculate. We would consider renting there again but maybe not the same unit.

No desire to dis this establishment, which more than other places I've read on Poipu seems to inspire a lot of genuine affection - so have recommended it and given it highest marks. But just wanted to post a warning - there are some major renovations scheduled for this building, may want to inquire about it before you book up. (POSTED AUGUST 2009).

My husband and I rented this one bedroom condo through Kauai Vacation Rentals and were really pleased with it. This immaculate and spacious condo is beautfully furnished, has a very comfortable king bed, and features many "extras" including a flat screen TV, beach mats and chairs, binoculars for spotting turtles in the ocean down below (about 100 yards) and any cooking accessories you could imagine. The kitchen and bathroom had recently been upgraded with granite countertops and the small balcony overlooking the central pool is perfect for having drinks or eating dinner while watching the sunsets. This condo complex is within walking distance to Brennecke's and Poipu Beach which was great!
The only major flaw was that noise carries pretty easily due to the L shape of the condo complex, meaning that we could hear conversations taking place in the pool or conversations from other balconies. It was never too bothersome for us, however, but it may have been had we wanted to sleep in.
There was some very loud construction occuring during our stay and we did ask Kauai Vacation Rentals to move us which they did promptly. But overall we loved our stay at Sunset Kahili #203 and would definitely stay there again!

Stayed for 1 week in December 2008

Great overall experience : Clean, pleasant decor, fully stocked kitchen, new appliances including washer dryer, large bathroom, comfortable king size bed. Condo owner has taken great care.
Excellent booking experience with management company R&R Rentals.

Really loved the screened windows on each outside-facing sides of the condo. Made for a fresh ocean breeze at night. With sound of the ocean made for heavenly sleeps. No A/C and no need for it - at least not in December.

Would stay there again in a heartbeat. Great location just 5 min walk from Poipu beach. 5 min walk to the east is a gorgeous 3 mile walk along the beach and ocean cliffs to Hyatt and beyond.

Some things to know. No problems - just to know.
- Perfect for a couple or perhaps up to 2 small children (pull-out sofa)
- Bedroom has a sliding door divider (not a hard wall)
- For better ocean view, look at higher floors
- This is partially over the pool and partially over the parking lot.

We spent one week in unit #507 and I think we got way more than we bargained for...in a nice way!!!

I want to list the pros and cons:

Pros:
1. Awesome location at a superb price. We had an unobstructed almost 180 degree view of the pacific ocean from our 5th floor balcony and windows. In the night you could be lulled to sleep hearing the waves crashing below.
2. Very friendly staff. They helped us figure out what would be the best beaches to visit.
3. A small pool exists on the property. I didn't try it out, but from the looks of it, it looked pretty good.
4. The property is just one 5 storey building, so its not like you have to walk miles to get to the rec. room or pool. Its just downstairs.
5. A rec room is provided downstairs. They have books and video tapes and dvds you can take to your room upstairs. A few board games also provided.
6. The unit was spruced up really well, with a full kitchen, very nice furniture and even a flat screen tv. Oh, and I forget to mention...the best thing...wireless internet connection.
7. Beach umbrella, beach chairs and snorkel mask provided in the unit,
8. Some beach toys also provided.
9. Very clean and well maintained unit.
10. Lots of beach towels, bath towels and kitchen towels provided.
11. Reclining chairs and table provided on the balcony.
12. At 3am there was a wonderful, wonderful view of the full moon shimmering over the water of the Pacific Ocean. Very beautiful!
13. Poipu beach park and Brennecke's beach are just a walk away. (unless you've got little kids and then would have to drive)

Cons:
1. The biggest con I found was that we could not leave the sliding door to the balcony open, b'cos we have a two year old. The balcony has railings...a two year old can't really squeeze through them, but then with kids its better to be safe. If you've got adventurous kids you'll have to keep a sharp eye out to make sure they don't climb on the balcony furniture and lean over the edge. Luckily we were able to manage fine.
2. The entry to the parking lot is a bit tricky. You have to have your car come in at an angle from the far right side of the entry way. We had arrived at night and didn't know this. The far left side of the entry way is a little too 'high' and the underside of our car hit it while coming in, causing us to need to have our rental car exchanged. But once we figured this out, it was ok. We did tell the guy at the reception that the should really post a warning there. Maybe they will.
3. There is no housekeeping done while you're visiting. They only clean the unit before you start your stay and after you leave. If you want housekeeping done while you're there, you'll have to request the housekeeping crew to do this. They charge $25/hour, but they do a very decent job. All kinds of cleaning supplies are also provided in the unit so this isn't really a problem. We only had to have 1 cleaning service requested in our 1 week of stay.
4. If you want to change your sheets and towels you'll have to take them downstairs and have them exchanged between 8am and 4pm. But this self service is also built into the price so we didn't think this was a big issue.
5. The office is open only between 8am and 4pm. We didn't have to make any emergency calls, so I don't know how that works.
6. The rec room is open only till 8pm.

  • Liked — Beautiful view. Very laid back place, gives you the feeling that there's nothing pressing in the agenda. Felt like a vacation :-)
  • Disliked — The safety issue on the balcony
