We spent 5 wonderful nights in Unit 136, a nicely-decorated 3rd floor condominium with 2 stories, 2 bedrooms, and 2.5 baths. It was absolutely amazing to be right on the oceanfront with the waves crashing just feet away. The living room/dining area, bedroom and master bath (and of course the lanai) all had views of the sea. We were constantly spotting whales and their spouting. Full kitchen and washer-dryer made us quite self-sufficient and it wasn't long before we felt fully at home. The grounds were restful and extremely well cared-for and the pool and hot tub were a delight after a long hike (as was the ocean, just steps away). The staff was very accommodating and gracious. Aileen, for example, helped me source a bouquet for Valentine's Day. The location of the property, despite being right on the water, allowed us to easily walk to shopping and dining spots. This is a beautiful, comfortable, uniquely situated resort and we would have no hesitation staying here again.

Room Tip: I'd recommend a third floor unit if at all possible.

My partner and I spent an amazing 2 weeks at the beautiful Whalers Cove resort. The resort is very well maintained with beautiful landscaping and is immaculately clean. The staff are always smiling and very friendly. The views are amazing as you are right on the water which makes it great for seeing turtles, watching the whales breach, and of course, catching the most stunning sunsets! The resort is centrally located within a short walk or drive to a number of beaches, shops and restaurants.
We stayed in Unit 130 which is a 2 bedroom, 21/2 bathroom condo on 2 levels that would sleep 4 comfortably. It has been renovated to a very high standard and has everything you need for enjoy your holiday. The tasteful Hawaiian decor is a nice touch.
We are from Canada and have noticed that Kauai is not the first choice Canadians make as they usually select Honolulu or the island of Maui. We encourage Canadians and all other nationalities to visit the beautiful island of Kauai and treat yourself with a stay at Whalers Cove Resort!!

Room Tip: All the rooms have some sort of oceanview. A very, quiet resort.

Our second visit and we love the views, location, and staff ...but- some of the units are terribly out- dated. There needs to be a truth factor when you call to rent a place. On our first visit our unit was beautiful, this time - not so much. You need to be told about the condition of the unit you are renting and they should be priced according. Homeowners assoc should enforce remodeling. Too bad because the whole place should be great.. but buyer beware . We had # 136 - needs a total rehab

We had not been to Kauai since 1988, ( pre Iniki) and never had a desire to return until we went back in December, 2013, and stayed at Whaler's Cove Resort, unit 133. We traveled with our best friends who for the last 12 years always rent unit 135. I can't even begin to describe Whaler's Cove. Our unit was beautiful and so comfortable. It included top of the line EVERYTHING! As owners of art glass and beautiful photography on canvas ourselves we truly appreciated and enjoyed the owner's beautiful decor in this unit. The view of the ocean from our balcony was mesmerizing. We were also impressed with the office staff as well as the gardener! What a beautiful garden of orchids he maintains. We are returning to Whaler's Cove, unit 133, in July and will make it our vacation destination every year from now on.

Just got back from a fabulous week at the Whalers' Cove on the beyond beautiful island of Kauai. We stayed in Condo 211 and couldn't have been more pleased. This condo is very spacious, clean and has everything you need for a great time away from home. We especially enjoyed all the local themed artwork and furnishings which were very fun but tastefully done. The master bathroom is huge with a fabulous shower and jacuzzi tub offering a great view of the ocean via a two way mirror in the living room for privacy. This is one of the deluxe condos and is in the building situated behind the pool on the ground floor. That being said, your ocean view is still top notch from the very large lanai and the incredible landscaping actually allows you some degree of privacy even given the location. While using the lounge chairs, you can't even see the pool deck, just the beautiful ocean and tropical vegetation. We were lucky enough to see whales every day. There is no sandy beach access here but fabulous beaches are just a short drive away. There is however, wonderful snorkelling to be had via a staircase accessed from the 200 building's parking lot and a short easy climb down some lava rocks. You enter the water in a small cove with a beautiful small waterfall visable at the far end. Visablitly isn't great in the small cove but it is a very short swim to gain access to the larger old Koloa Harbor cove which has great visability and tons of fish and other sea life to be seen all along the rocks boardering the condos. This area is also known for turtles and did not disappoint! Even if you don't snorkel, make sure you at least go and check out the small cove from the top of the staircase or the guardrail in the back of the parking lot for the 200 building, especially 1st thing in the morning or near sunset, and I am sure you will be able to spot at least one turtle swimming around or sunning on the rocks. A real treat, for sure! This is our second time to stay at Whalers' Cove and can't wait to come back! We love the quiet, non-resort feel and the welcoming, wonderful staff help make your vacation one you won't soon forget.

Room Tip: We have also stayed in the 100 building which is oceanfront and a little more private, especially on...

Whalers Cove Resort is a gorgeous property sitting right on the ocean's edge. It is of older construction but very well maintained with stunning views. We were entertained daily with whales frolicking in the ocean and enjoyed the view from a huge lanai with well appointed outdoor furniture perfect for sun bathing. Unit 122 is a lovely and spacious unit loaded with beautiful art, 2 bedrooms, a nice dining and living room, 2.5 baths and a very functional laundry center. This is a "Deluxe Waterfront" unit which has ocean views from both the dining room and living rooms, the bedrooms are located in the rear of the unit, away from the crashing waves with a cool breeze that blows though in the evening. There is a brand new 70" Samsung TV in the living room and a new 46" Samsung in the master bedroom. The master suite is roomy, has a California King bed that was very comfortable and linens of good quality. The very furniture is very nice and fits the room perfectly. Master bath is huge walk-in shower with 2 heads and the deep, jetted tub affords a wonderful view of the ocean through a one-way mirror. We did not use the 2nd bedroom - it's has twin beds, full bath with tub and shower and a huge closet. We stayed 2 weeks and, upon departure, booked the same unit for 2 weeks next January. New, comfort height toilets would be a great addition to this place but, other that than minor issue, this a perfect place to rest and rejuvenate!

I stayed in Whalers Cove for 10 days this past November and rate the experience a 3.5 / 5.

Pros
1. beautifully situated property next to sea turtle habitat overlooking ocean
2. well-built and very well maintained property - orchid gardens, constant grooming of property, nice structurally designed units
3. pool area was designed for optimal sun during day overlooking ocean and was typically very quiet
4. one of the nicer properties in Poipu; (Hyatt is too large and wasn't aesthetically pleasing; Koa Kea is a 'chotchy' or trendy boutique hotel retrofitted into an older hotel with limited lobby / dining facilities, which didn't work for me as I walked the property)

Cons
1. No exercise facility; no immediate beach access
2. Property was quiet, maybe too quiet
3. Unit I stayed in and others I viewed online have outdated decor. Kitchens & bathrooms should be remodeled and decoration updated from the early 90s
