“Good stay at the Westin”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 September 2011

We just returned from 6 nights here and enjoyed our stay. While we were initially disappointed not to have an ocean view, we loved looking out at the garden. Our couple of problems were immediately dealt with by the staff. The pool area was gorgeous. I would stay there again.

Room Tip: We liked building 5 and had a studio room.

We stayed at the Westin for four nights over the summer. We were in a one bedroom suite that overlooked the pool and pretty tiki torches at night. We loved that there were plenty of grills on the property because each night we enjoyed getting fresh fish from the Hanalei Dolphin and bringing it back to the hotel to grill. Our room was always immaculate and cleaned daily. The grounds of this hotel are stellar and the amenities they offer the guests are unlike any other we have seen from other hotels in Kauai, or all of Hawaii. We are pretty spoiled now after staying here. We have decided that we will come back to Kauai only when this hotel is available. After staying here, we just can't stay anywhere else!

We booked this property for one week using our Starpoints and we couldn't have been happier. We had a first floor garden view room in Building 7 and it was perfectly sized for my family with 2 kids (4 years old and 1.5 years old). The rooms have very good sound dampening - I couldn't hear my neighbors next to us or above us at all. While the 1 BR would have been nice, we were hardly in our room because we were too busy enjoying the resort's amenities and Kauai's awesome scenery!

The resort has a "green" option for foregoing housecleaning in lieu of a $10 voucher that can be used for breakfast at the Princeville Market and lunch and dinner at Nanea. We did this three times during our weeklong stay, picking up breakfast (Anini wrap - delicious).

My children absolutely loved the children's pool. My 4 year old had a great time going down the water slide and my 1.5 year old daughter loved the spraying turtles. We also used the Weber grill once and had a delicious grilled fish for lunch.

While there is no true access to the beach, there are plenty of beach options in the North Shore. Anini Beach is just 15 min. away, Tunnels (Makua), Hanalei Pier, and Ke'e are relatively close also. Excellent snorkeling at Tunnels!

We had a wonderful time here. Staff was very friendly, the amenities are top notch, the resort's grounds and rooms are well-maintained, and the views are spectacular. The only downside (very minor) is the parking situation, but we solved that by dropping off our stuff and kids by the entrance first and then finding a spot.

We would return again in a hearbeat!

General Princeville tips:

*Get your groceries at the Big Save in Hanalei, much cheaper than the Foodland in Princeville.
*Make sure you don't miss the fabulous seafood at Hanalei Dolphin Restaurant, don't forget to order the Rainbow Poke "Martini" and the ahi steak! For dessert, get shave ice at Wishing Well down the road.
*Don't forget about the Hanalei Farmer's Market on Saturdays - get your fresh fruit and vegetables here. Try the starfruit and dragonfruit.
*Follow the resort on Twitter @WestinPOR. They were responsive when I inquired through Twitter before our vacation.

Room Tip: Buildings 6 and 7 are closer to the parking lot but farther away from the main pool and children'...

Our stay was great!!!! We were upgraded to a one bedroom villa and loved every minute of our stay. The room was very large and spacious and it was nice to have the kitchen in our room. The staff was very helpful and friendly at all times. The pools were awesome and we loved going over to the St Regis to use there beach (they bring around some type of cold snack about every hour - our favorite was the sherbet push ups). The view from the beach is simply breathtaking and there is a shuttle from the Westin to the St Regis every hour or valet is also available free of charge. At the Westin if you decline housekeeping services for a day you get a $10 voucher to be used that day at the restaurants - we would highly recommend using it at the pool bar for Pork Quesidillas or sweet potato fries. Be sure to check pool by building six and get there early to get a good spot it has an awesome view of the ocean!

We were skeptical at first, given an awful room on check in (brick wall view), they politely upgraded us to a one bedroom with the afore mentioned a/c and parking lot view, however we could see the mountains over the a/c unit. Some things were cheesy (they gave you cards for towels and you had to turn towels in to get cards back, beach towels were inexpensive and thin).....
THEN...
we got into the Kauai mode and loved it:
PROS
GREAT rooms, new, full kitchen stocked with everything you need to cook, washer and dryer
Beautiful grounds
Great pools with service
Very nice size balcony with comfortable furniture
polite and helpful service (had a problem with our door lock and the maintenance man was very responsive and helpful... he went to the desk, had new keys made for us, brought them back and made sure they worked)
Grills... (These are wonderful. When we arrived I said I would never cook my own dinner on vacation). Then you realize how far it is to drive to everything on Kauai and this hotel has stunning views, so we actually bought steaks and veggies and grilled out and watched the sunset, met lots of interesting people and had the exact meal we wanted).
Access to St Regis beach, beautiful, beautiful beach, wonderful view, average service
15% discount on food at St Regis through Westin
nice area to exercise walk all around
CONS
pool towel check in and out
average food by the pool (but it's ok if you bring your own food and drink!)
views from many rooms aren't good in spite of the property being beautiful

Initially we thought we'd never return, by the end of the trip we were raving about the place. It is a wonderful value.

Room Tip: Look at the room before you move in. Higher floors have better views beware parking lot views

Westin, Princville, Kuaui takes you away from everything!
No easy access to beaches. More tropical remote feeling.
A short drive to Hanalei gets and on a great empty beach and little town with lots to offer. Car Rental a must.

Room Tip: Choose room according to your own preference and cost. All the rooms looked good.

Ok, here's the quick low down of this property from my previous 3 vacations out there:

Pros -
* Clean and isolated. This resort is very laid back, but the Westin does an awesome job at making you feel on "island time".
* Great for both couples and families
* Absolutely scenic location, with a picturesque sunset view
* Went in February and saw heaps of whales breaching from the jacuzzi and room
* Request the "hammerheads" at buildings 3, 6 & 7. Best view of the Pacific!
* Rooms are spacious, very good condition and comfy (kitchens are a plus...hit up Costco)
* Mahalo to the staff :)
* You do have access to some amenities at the nearby (walking distance) St. Regis, with some additional discounts provided by the Westin.
* Tons of bbq's
* Short distance to Hanalei Bay

Cons -
* Yes, its true. There are cocks (aka roosters, hens and geese wandering around, waking you up and looking for some food)! Though our most recent trip, there were less.
* No direct beach access!
* Certain rooms aren't ideal (e.g. veer away from the rooms by noisy machines...A/C units, etc)
* Gym is somewhat small in my mind, however there is a steam / sauna room

Enjoy and mahalo! Will be back for sure, asap :)

Room Tip: Hammerheads at Buildings 3, 6 or 7.
