“Lush gardens and Updated property”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 May 2014

We arrived at night and the entrance and lights are beautiful. The property felt warm and welcoming. But I was disappointed that the hotel didn't have the wow factor. My friends had warned me that the hotel is nice, clean and has beautiful green areas... But it is not a luxurious, wow kind of place. They had recommended the grand Hyatt in Poipu for part of our trip but it was booked the whole time we were on the island... So we took a day trip down there just to check it out and enjoyed a delicious meal there. And it is amazing. Gorgeous. With tons of pools and a salt water lagoon too. And you can hear the waves and go to the beach. Here at the westin princeville.... You can see the ocean from the cliffs pool but we're pretty high up so you cant hear the waves. You definitely need to see the st regis though. It has absolutely amazing views. Like wowowowowow. You can take the westin shuttle there or just drive and valet.... There's no fee to valet..... Just tip. The Bali hai view is really stunning. That's why we stayed on the north shore. For these green lush verdant mountains. It truly is breathtaking. We came in May and it only rained for maybe 30 minutes while we were here and just sprinkled here and there. Mostly sunny and very warm. It almost felt sunny like the south side of the island. And although the westin is not a wow kind of hotel.... It is clean. Updated and pleasant to look at. The kitchens have granite and stainless steel fridge and the soft yellow painted walls lend a welcoming feel. The pools are beautifully maintained and have gorgeous black rocks around them and some with waterfall features..., which I love the sounds of the waterfalls. So soothing. Some of the other properties around here.... Wyndham and others look a bit tired... At least from the outside. Hanalei farmers market on Saturdays are awesome. The longan fruit was almost out of season ... But was sooo delicious. Wish I had bought more since the main market food land didn't have it. Oh, and the organic market in hanalei has good sandwiches and smoothies. A very small version of a whole foods market. Definitely come and enjoy the north side of the island. If you want wow... Stay at the st regis on the north side or for wow on the south side.... Then the grand Hyatt Poipu. If you want quiet, mellow, and nice with the occasional meal in or at the BBQ then the westin princeville is for you. Mahalo.

Green Features: Lots of recycle areas on property. Big thumbs up for being so environmentally conscious.

Dear Shirleysmile: Thank you for providing a review on the experience you had as you visited the various resorts around the island. It is nice to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and we appreciate your comments about the resort being updated, clean and well maintained. Our guests at The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas enjoy the comforts of home including the spacious accommodations and that all of our units have fully equipped kitchens, whirlpool tubs, DVD players, the Westin Heavenly Beds & Baths, sofa beds, complimentary high speed internet access, no resort fee and more. Throughout the resort, guests enjoy the 4 pools at the resort in addition to the lap pool at the Makai Course which is for the exclusive use of The Westin Princeville guests and a small community group. We also have Nanea Restaurant, Wailele Bar and the Princeville Market along with the 20 Gas BBQ grills located around the resort. We are fortunate to have a wonderful partnership with our sister Resorts, the St Regis Princeville and Sheraton Kauai Resort in Poipu where our guests may dine at their restaurants and charge back to their room account at The Westin Princeville. We appreciate your feedback and hope to see you on a future return visit. Mahalo and Be Well!

As others have said, the Westin Princeville Villas are not a high-intensity, rush-rush location. And, yes, there is rain on the north coast of Kauai, especially in winter. But we were there for 16 days in January, and there was significant rain on only four days. We had beautiful weather for the helicopter ride (highly recommended), for golf, and for sightseeing.

The villas are spread out in 6 buildings (2-7; 1 is for administration and sales). We were lucky to score a great unit in Building 3 facing the ocean; 2nd floor has a better view; 1st floor has a patio where you can walk right out on the grass and peer over the edge of the cliff (fenced off for safety). The quiet pools are small, tucked away and very serene for adults, although there isn't the service there that is at the main pool. At the main pool there are many, many seating areas, nicely spread out, and a number of grilling and eating areas (there are also very nice grill areas scattered throughout the resort. In general, you are more likely to see the ocean in any building if you are not on the 1st floor, although not all buildings have an ocean view.

We attended the resort orientation meeting held every Monday morning by the bar, and scored both Starwood points and Prince Course golf discounts in a raffle. Some local vendors also described (briefly) their tours and activities there.

We felt it really does help to have a car, since the eating options at the resort and the nearby shopping center (there is a courtesy shuttle) are limited; the best non-driving option is the pricey but lovely St. Regis (also a Starwood property--so you have reciprocal beach privileges and can charge dinner to your room). There are two lovely restaurants there, with views of the bay and the sunset.
The market at the shopping center is well stocked and really pretty reasonable; don't miss the ice cream shop next door.

The concierge staff was very helpful; we had a billing problem that took quite a bit of effort to resolve, but the staff went to the extra effort to get us what we needed to sort things out. There's a nice workout room, business center, and guest lounge inside the main building, where a deli/store and the Nanae restaurant are located.

We found several good places to eat in Hanlei, just 10 minutes down the hill (Postcard Cafe, Hanalei Gourmet), and enjoyed the Tavern at the Prince golf course. After 3:00 you can rent a golf cart to ride around the course (without playing golf) and take in the gorgeous views and the lovely homes.

All-in-all, a good place for kids, and also for couples that want to spread out and eat in sometimes. Furnishings are fresh and very comfortable, and every unit has a balcony or a patio. All baths have both a separate shower and a tub, much appreciated.

Room Tip: 2nd or 3rd floors have better views; there are elevators, though they may be a distance from the roo...

Green Features: There was a good recycling program in place, both in the rooms and around the premises.

Aloha coloradofan82: Mahalo for taking the time to write a detailed review on your recent stay at The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas. We are delighted to hear that you had an enjoyable stay with us and had an opportunity to experience the pools, BBQ grills, restaurant and other facilities. Also that you participated in the Vacation Kick Off which is an informational event hosted by the resort every Monday morning that provides our guests with information to help them plan their island experiences and congratulations on also winning some of the door prizes. Thank you for recommending The Westin Princeville for a place to stay and we hope to welcome you back soon. Mahalo and Be Well!

Laid back low key resort makes this very Hawaiian. Although you have all the amenities you need the resort is lacking in restaurants. The staff is courteous and helpful and is always willing to go above and beyond. But if you are looking for the "wow" factor this resort is not for you. Located on the cliffs in Princeville you do not have direct beach access. Also, Princeville is on the wetter side of the island so visiting in January is not recommended unless you like rain! If you are a golfer, this resort is adjacent to a wonderful course with gorgeous views. Fortunately, we have been to Kauai before this visit so having the rain did not dampen our spirits but I don't think a January visit to Kauai is recommended for sun worshipers.

Dear Gary C: Thank you for the review on your recent stay. We appreciate your comments about the courteous and helpful staff and how they are always willing to go above and beyond. We are located on an ocean cliff so the resort sits 200 feet above the Pacific Ocean. Although we are not a beachfront resort, there are some of the most beautiful beaches located nearby and within a short drive from the resort. The staff has a Beach Guide which outlines these beaches and includes information such as facilities, driving directions and ocean safety information. We hope to welcome you back on a future visit to the islands. Mahalo and Be Well!

We stayed overnight to use some coupons. The makai golf course was great, with great service. Wish they still used Hawaiian springs water though. Nanea Sunday brunch was very good. Sushi, crab legs, and prime rib. Nuff said.

Never having been to Hawaii before, we decided to accept a "promotion" from the Westin properties to come to Kauai. These are the things that come in the mail when you are a frequent traveler, and have status with loyalty points, and we have always thrown them away. We were skeptical, but actually called the SPG 800 number and spoke to an agent who assured us we would not be forced to "sit through the usual pitch." They would "highly encourage us," but there would be no high pressure.
So, we agreed and booked our trip. Prior to arrival, we had numerous "check-in" phone calls from the staff at Westin to make certain we felt ready for our adventure. We were assigned a personal concierge who made arrangements for excursions and they were able to be charged to our room. Nice touch!
Upon late night arrival to Lihue airport (east shore), we got our packaged Avis rental car (easy breezy), and drove an easy hour to the property on the North Shore. We were exhausted, and the check in process was easy and welcoming, so we got to bed at a decent time; after receiving a complimentary upgrade from a studio to a one bedroom suite. There were no rooms in the "TA recommended" buildings of 6 and 7, but we were happy in building 5. Our room was bigger than we needed, but we appreciated the ability to stretch out during our stay. Lovely view of the pool area (not too loud, really), great breezes from the balcony, and had all the kitchen and amenities one would need.
We were scheduled to meet with our personal concierge on the morning of our 1st day, and she was helpful and courteous (Malathy). After getting all of our excursions together (see separate reviews of Captain Andy's and Princeville Ranch Zip Express) and discussing several recommended restaurants for our stay, she politely encouraged us to attend the 90 minute "informative presentation" on SPG properties. We declined as we were not able to attend (we scheduled almost every minute of our trip), and no one stalked us or called us; which we appreciated greatly.
This property has 4 pools, with two being small pools with hot tubs tucked into corners. These are designated "quiet pools" where children are not really welcome, and most people respect the serenity and beauty of the spaces provided. {One note for the management...the hot tub near building 6 was WAY too hot for most guests}
Another pleasant surprise was that people respected the "don't put your towel down for 5 days to save a lounge chair" request. While the property seemed busy, there was always ample seating near the pool. You may not have a tiki tent, but you will have a seat.
Staff here is attentive and friendly. You don't always have service at the far away pools, but they are a quick walk back to the pool bar and amply stocked "Princeville Market" which has a variety of snacks, wine, cold drinks, Starbucks coffee, and fab smoothies! They also carry "dinner fare" of fresh fish and chicken for grilling on the MANY pristinely cleaned Weber gas grills around the property.
The WESTIN has a sister property (5 star St Regis Princeville) down the road from the hotel. They provide free shuttle to this property, and Westin guests have complimentary valet parking, use of the St. Regis beach (there is no beach at the Westin), and discounts at the restaurants and spa. While we did not see the beach as something spectacular, we did not avail ourselves of the on the hour shuttle to the St Regis beach.
We did, however, eat at the St. Regis' Terrace restaurant for a lovely breakfast buffet (see separate review), and the view was beyond anything we had seen in Kauai. We were able to charge our breakfast to our room at the Westin. Again, easy breezy.
My husband also took advantage of the discounted fees at the Prince Golf Course. He is an avid golfer, and said while the course itself was challenging, it was the most beautiful course he had played to date. What an amazing surprise addition to our vacation.
Toward the end of our trip, we made arrangements for a slightly later check out, and were also offered the chance to reserve a complimentary hospitality room (45 minutes) so we could prepare for our overnight flight back to mainland USA. This is such a GREAT touch for those of us who take the 9:55 pm flight out of LIU to LAX. It allowed us to enjoy a full day at the property on our departure date.
FYI: If you want to be 'where the action is," (and we use the term "action" loosely) make certain you have a rental car to get you to the islands busier south side. We were happy at the laid back north side. Kauai is not the place to shop and bop. Come to experience, adventure, and relax!
All in all, a wonderful stay for our first trip to Hawaii. We hope to return in the future and would consider the Westin experience again.

Room Tip: Definitely get a 2nd or 3rd floor room for more privacy.

Green Features: I was happy with the recycling program at this hotel. Recycling bins were everywhere, and they only did one full linen service on our room during our week stay (unless requested at an additional price). We had one additional towel refresh, with encouragement to reuse towels to save water

My husband and stayed at the Westin for 8 days. The staff was very friendly. The grounds are super clean. The view from the grilling areas are magnificent. Just one thing, don't expect the resort's staff to give you directions on how to get to certain places. They won't. Overall, the Westin is great!

We are here for 5 nights. Checked in on May 4, 2014. I am a frequent traveler and staying here with SPG points.

I woke up this morning to discover 11 insect bites on my arm and 5 on my leg. Both on the right side of my body.

I called the front desk and they sent a manager on duty and security to take a report.

I requested a new room immediately and not hassle with pest control, etc. Did not want to bother with further inspections during our vacation. Also, my wife is 5 months pregnant and want to ensure all is clean for her.

Let's see what happens with next steps by this hotel's management.

Aloha Justfix,

Thank you for choosing The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas and for sharing your experience thus far. We take pest control very seriously at The Westin Princeville and had our third-party pest control experts thoroughly inspected your villa with negative findings. We invite you to reach out to a manager on duty should you have any questions or wish to discuss your experience further. We hope you will consider joining us again in the islands and look forward to welcoming you back soon. Aloha.
