“Nice quiet hotel; great rooms”
Reviewed 1 December 2008

We really enjoyed this new hotel. Very nice rooms, great furniture, Westin beds, etc. This is not a mega-hotel---just one restuarant on premises. Plan to chill on the north shore.

I thought this hotel was nice, but the online presentation makes it seem much more grand than it really is. Over-all a nice hotel. Pros: Some of the staff members are extremely curteous and have excellent customer service skills. When we arrived, it was quite late and the Manager (I think) had security open up the market for us so we could get a bite to eat. The Manager of the concierge department is wonderful and hopefully the hotel will recognize her "above and beyond" service. There was also a wonderful hostess at the hotel restaurant who squeezed us in and saved our Thanksgiving dinner. We had reservations at a horrible little restaurant called Bouchons. We were told they could only take us at 7:30. When we arrived (early at 7:00), they seated "walk-ins". We were also told they would have a full menu, thanksgiving dinner, and sushi bar. As we were deciding what to order, we were told that it was only a planned menu. Then a few minutes later, the waitress came by and told us they were sold out of turkey. 5 minutes later, were told they were sold out of everything but 2 items on the menu. Basically at 7:15 they were out of food even though they had taken reservations. Diner at the hotel restaurant was fabulous.

Cons: Roosters all over the island. They crow at sunrise and there is no possibility of sleeping in on vacation unless you are a very heavy sleeper. Beaches aren't as nice as Maui. Most of the activites are on the South side of the island so be prepared for a 40-60 drive one way.

  • Liked — Some few staff members who went above and beyond
  • Disliked — roosters crowing at the crack of dawn, no beach, no spa

My wife and I stayed at the Westin Princeville for our honeymoon last month. I can't say enough positive things about the front desk and concierge staff. Everyone was so helpful! Mahea, the concierge, was especially personable and friendly to us. She remembered our names, and gave personal recommendations (I know, that's what she's supposed to do, but it was still nice). She really made our honeymoon a great one.

The hotel itself is wonderful. We had a great room in building 6. We loved the kitchenette, it was really convenient to have a fridge and microwave! The chickens (aka "Hawaiian Squirrels") are noisy from sun up to sun down, and aren't afraid to sit right outside your room to start calling out. It's like this all over the island, though, so it's not the hotel's fault. I think we only noticed it because we're not used to it.

The only aspect of our trip that we felt could use improvement is the food service. The presentation and quality of the food is top-notch, but the service was consistently slow. We realize it's a big property, but to wait for 40 minutes for two burgers at the poolside cafe at an off-peak meal time is a bit much. It wasn't crazy inconvenient, as we weren't in a hurry to go anywhere (why would you leave such a serene place?).

P.S. There are several comments regarding kids causing issues. Those people need to learn not to go during school vacation season. We went at the end of October, and saw *maybe* 5 kids our entire trip. It was very peaceful.

  • Liked — The personal service by conceierges and FD staff; cleanliness of room
  • Disliked — The restaurant service

We decided to stay at the Westin only after our reservations at the Princeville Resort were bumped for renovations to the hotel. So we didn't know exactly what to expect from the Westin. Excellent location, beautiful room with ocean views. The huge shower and whirlpool tubs were huge bonuses! I would say some of the amenities were lost on us since we were only staying for three nights - but with full kitchens and access to grills, it looked like a great option for extended stays and/or families who want to do some of their own cooking. The pool was lovely, but the pool-side service a little lacklaster. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to others.

Just back from 5 nights at Westin Princeville villa. We got a Starwoods special via the mail for 5 nights at $795. Plus gave us $185 voucher we used for Avis car rental, as well as $100 voucher to use at the resort.......food, spa, golf, etc.... Admittedly, we took the offer as it was a great deal and we had the North Shore of Kauai on our radar as a vacation must do. The location and whole North Shore area is a bit of heaven on earth. Lush jungle, beautiful beaches, golf, etc... While there they offered us another $75 voucher if we go to a 90 minute vacation club presentation.........what the heck, why not? We are sorry we took that up.....it was somewhat high-pressure and they really seemed upset we wouldn't go for it. I thought they were rude. Outside of that, the villa and grounds were really nice. Only drawback is that it is on the cliff above the beach. If you want to go to the beach you need to drive/shuttle to it or risk your neck walking down a some dangerous trail. Great location if you plan on spending all your time on the North Shore. Plenty to see and do in that area. Helicopter tour, ziplining at Princeville Ranch and hiking the Na Pali coast are must dos. The Na Pali trail is quite rigorous and well worth the effort for the views. This trail is at the end of the road at Kee Beach. If you don't need to able to walk right to the beach and can get a deal like we did, you can't go wrong. Just don't do the vacation club presentation unless you really are interested in it. The extra $75 voucher wasn't worth it.

We stayed two nights at the Westin at the end of our two week stay in Hawaii. This year we did one week on Maui and one week on Kauai. I should start out by saying that we stayed at the Westin Kaanapali last year and were less than impressed with their room accommodations. So much so that we vowed not to stay there ever again. This year, in an effort to save money we stayed at Condo's and then opted for two days at the Westin because it was a brand new facility. It was worth the wait! We really enjoyed the larger rooms (compared to Maui) which included a full size fridge, mini dishwasher, two stove top burners, a mini sink, and washer and dryer. There were also approximately 25 grills on location in various areas so that you could cook your own meals. This is a huge bonus because if you cook meals in even 3-4 nights you can save upwards of $300-500 dollars easily.

This Westin does not offer a great deal in respect to activities. They do however offer "surfing" lessons in their pool. This was a joy to watch-though I never tried it! The instructor was fun, and interacted well with his students. The instructor also offered a candid Ocean Safety class. That class taught me a great deal about the ocean that I never knew, even though I live in WA State and grew up around water. He taught how people get caught up and taken out to see easily, and that one really should check with the lifeguards prior to going in the water to check conditions. I will say if you stay here and have an opportunity to listen to him, take the 15 minutes.

We spent 5 nights at The Westin Princeville and really enjoyed our stay. Although we paid the introductory rate of $250 ($280 with tax) per night, I expected a little more for a room that normally goes for $600 per night. However, the property is very nice, the service is very good and the location is perfect if you are interested in the north shore.

The Pros:
Our flight was arriving very late and the hotel called our cell phone while we were delayed in the airport and asked if we would like anything stocked in our fridge for when we arrived. This was above and beyond in my opinion and I was happy to have the few provisions we requested. The rooms are fairly quiet, but the studios are very small. The service was great and the food in the restaurant and poolside was very good. Generally the pool was great and relaxing with the majority of the kids sticking to the "kids side" of the area. The concierge was also very good (Meadow, Jennifer and Connie were all pretty good) and know the island very well. The two restaurants they recommended (Baracuda and The Mediterranean Gourmet) were good. Baracuda was a great dinner place in Hanalei. Mediterranean Gorumet was a cool restaurant with average food - but better to check out for lunch because it is right on the water and you can't see anything at night. It's close to the end of the road on the north shore. Other pros were having a mini kitchen and being able to make coffee and have cereal on the lanai every morning. Also, free wireless and free fitness center make you feel like there isn't any "nickel and diming" going on.

The Cons:
Maybe it's me, but I am not used to sleeping right next to a full size refrigerator. It was loud and disturbed my sleep. That coupled with the air conditioner which blew so hard right on the bed, it wasn't a great sleeping environment. Although the bed and bedding was comfortable. The kitchen in the studio doesn't actually have an oven, just two small burners and virtually no counter space. It's really too small to do anything except the basic breakfast/lunch stuff. Plus, there is really no where to have a meal (only one small table). The parking situation is not great, so be prepared to walk to the upper parking lot where there is more availability. It's not really a big deal.

Overall, I would stay at the Princeville Hotel (going to be a St. Regis in early 2009) if you are willing to pay the money. But if you get a good deal, this is a fantastic property and the staff is great.
