“Luxury and personal service, beauty and island immersion”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 August 2012

We arrived on the island early and took a leisurely drive to Princeville with our four kids. The drive was relaxing and interesting, and we were just happy to be on Kauai. When we drove up to the St. Regis, we were warmly and happily greeted by someone whose name escapes me, but he was good. He took over for us and just pointed to where we should go to check in. Every person we encountered during our stay was like he was, some more so than others. Staff are efficient and seem truly happy to be there as well as make our trip dreamy. The setting is lovely. Yes, pool is small and it is sort of barely an infinity pool. Does not look anything like the pictures we saw. Beach is full of coral and is not extremely swimmable. OK, that said, that's it for anything remotely negative. The folks working the pool area are so friendly and helpful. A Diet Coke poolside will cost you about $7, so skip it and drink the free ice water and enjoy the occasional chunks of pineapple they pass around. The views from anywhere in this resort are amazing. Decor is island-like and comfortable but gorgeous. Flowers everywhere! I wish my mother had been with me to see all the flowers...both landscaped and wild as well as grandiose arrangements throughout the interiors. The young man, Timmy ("Timothy" on his name tag but introduced himself as "Timmy") was extremely helpful and friendly, and he even remembered our names when we passed him 3 days later!! The rooms here are luxurious but not ostentatioius in my opinion. Very clean and comfortable. (However, the bathrooms have no ventilation which is extremely odd and annoying considering the humidity.) There is this cool window thing between bathroom and bed area that can be see through or not with the click of a switch! The workout room is excellent. The running is fun and challenging, especially with rain every morning! The location is so nice...away from busy-ness but near enough to small towns to be able to get to them easily. We also enjoyed hiking around the beach area. This resort is not exciting but it is not supposed to be. It is relaxing and yet has plenty to do. I would return and so would all my family members. Oh and one more thing...I had the best manicure ever at this spa. (Thanks, Mari.) There is much more I could say about this resort but I am verbose already. One more thing, there are plenty of awesome beaches within 5 minutes driving. Aloha.

Room Tip: I doubt there is a bad room in the place.

We recently went to Kauai after 5 days on the island of lanai. Wish we had stayed on lanai or chosen another island to stay on. Friend suggested the St. Regis . The lobby area is beautiful and impressive when you arrive. The pool area is very small as is the beach area. The drive from he airport took close to an hour. We did not care for the area the hotel was in. It felt like in middle of a neighborhood with timeshare. There was not many options on things to do and we felt trapped at the hotel. The check in service was very good and agent set a nice tone.

Located near the Na' Pali Coast, this hotel has beautiful views of the ocean and mountains. The hotel is nestled in a resort that also has villas, separate spa building and a magnificent golf course. The restaurant at the hotel is expensive, as is the hotel, but both definitely fitting the elegant and luxurious ambience of the resort and the attention you receive from the staff. Yoga classes and other activities are offered and the views from the pool overlooking the ocean is calming.

We hiked the Na'Pali trail located about 15 mins or so away. It winds along the cliff edge and it was a challenge, especially after a rainstorm that left the narrow trail muddy and slippery. You must bring a backpack with you for this and fill it with frozen bottles of water, trail mix, sunscreen (you'll sweat off whatever you put on before the hike) light rain jacket and bug spray for your ankles. My husband was bitten by some exotic spider and needed several days of dr. visits in Honolulu.

The beach at St. Regis Princeville is good for snorkeling more than swimming because of all the coral. The hotel even does a snorkel class and tour for beginners complete with vests, fish ID wrist cards and surfboards for the newbies to rest upon however, the Pacific Ocean is salty enough to make anyone bouyant. For teens and adults, there are beginner surfboard classes right off the high hillside where proud parents or friends can watch while sipping a drink from the poolside bar.

I usually snorkel on my own and easily found myself far off from the resort bay. I encountered a moray eel peeking out from the coral walls at the beach itself. After a rainfall, you can even catch sight of waterfalls in the volcanic mountains. You can take a tour of the area where Jurassic Park and other movies were filmed and can almost expect a dinosaur to come trapsing across the valley.

The best sorbet in the world is found in town as well as wonderful little local restaurants. While I'm writing this, I realize how much I want to go back!

Room Tip: For absolute peace and quiet, choose rooms located in a wing far from the main building. The view fr...

This is an absolutely beautiful hotel. My husband and I stayed there for our honeymoon in one of the suites. The views are amazing! The housekeeping does a great job of doing your room twice a day. Everyone was super nice and friendly. The hotel knew it was our honeymoon but we certainly didn't tell anyone. However, they all knew and went the extra mile for us. Our butler gave us a free bottle of champagne with fruits upon our arrival. The chef at the one restaurant sent us out a free dessert after dinner. It was very thoughtful!

Cons:
We wanted to relax on our honeymoon. Beware -- there is a significant amount of kids. They were screaming and running around us on the beach at the hotel. There is no "adult only" area. Although we love children, it was not exactly how we visioned our relaxing honeymoon. We ended up leaving the beach and eventually just started going to other beaches in the local area, which we didn't want to do because we liked getting drinks throughout the day while we were laying out.
They have written that it is $20 a day for parking for our rental car. We were charged $30 a day.
We asked for a later check out because of our flight not being for another 10 hours. We asked just for another hour or two. They told us they could not accommodate us and we had to leave by noon. The housekeeping showed up at 11am, an hour before we had to be out, and asked when we were going to be leaving. It was a sad end to the trip because we felt like they really just wanted us out of there. We spent a significant amount of money at the hotel, eating there at least twice a day in the various restaurants, drinks throughout the day, room service and wine ordered at night, etc. so we were surprised that they wanted to push us out so quickly.

This is a terrific hotel for couples, the rooms are top-notch, and the service is truly outstanding, but I think there are certainly more "fun" places for those with young children. The beach is beautiful but small and is not the main attraction here. Great for those seeking a unique pristine island location - Kauai is a truly unspoiled paradise - with the amenities of a five star property. A car here is a must-have as there is nothing within walking distance of the hotel.

Room Tip: A room with a view is worth the additional cost - Kauai is visually one of the most stunning islands...

The Princeville hotel was magical at four stars and now even more amazing with the fifth star and new name...St Regis! The location demanded a five star hotel. Even if you don't stay here, you must go to the lobby and enjoy the lounge and most amazing view on any of the Hawaiian islands. Now that it is St Regis they are heating the pool to the perfect temperature....big upgrade from the previous cold (brrrr..) pool. The Sunday brunch on the terrace is still a MUST!

St Regis has really polished the main area of this North End Resort and improved the restaurants substantially as well. The rooms are also more appealing but I found some functional issues with the shower/bathroom layout. It's a bit of a walk from many of the rooms down to the pool area at the base of the hotel, but the view there is absolutely gorgeous and the pool area is very inviting. A great location if you love golfing or you want a peaceful location. The view from most of the rooms is also exceptional. I've provided separate reviews for the Kauai Grill and Makana Terrace. It would be nice, given the remote location, if the hotel could offer more in the way of entertainment (such as nightly live music).
