The Cliffs at Princeville
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 13 May 2012

With many rooms beautifully remodeled and a terrific new pool with waterfalls and two spas, the Cliffs is a great place to stay when on Kauai. Walking distance to the Princeville St. Regis and beautiful views add to the appeal. However, do not ask front desk staff or concierge for advice or assistance in booking activities. They will give you misinformation, ignore you, or worst of all, rip you off by keeping discounts that are offered by a venue for themselves. Apparently, they keep a small amount of commission on the booking for recommending you to an activity company. I've got no problem with that, but if the activity company offers guests a discount (like in those coupon books you get at the airport), the "concierge" doesn't tell you about it and keeps it for themselves. I was SHOCKED when I found this out, and the activity company that I was going to use was very surprised as well.

The housekeeping staff, on the other hand, is attentive and helpful.

This is a GREAT place to stay. Whether you're honeymooning or traveling with family or friends, it's a wonderful and comfortable location. Just stay away from the office staff...for the most part, they'll ignore you anyway.

I saw some poor reviews before going and let me tell you the folks must have been blind from the sun. We found our unit #1303 in great shape with everything one could ever need o 4/27/12! It was clean included beach chair and a cooler along with other nice touches. A great location and the staff at the resort was very nice. Nice cliff view of the ocean and right next to the Queens bath! We had the one bedroom with a loft and it was very spacious. Flat screen TVs in each room and nice DVD players and stereo. Kitchen was well equipped and really I could live in a similar unit. My thanks to the staff! The resort fee with taxes was 112.00 which included internet in my unit and the whole resort. The beds at this place are great. Really folks if you can trade for this place its a great pick!

Room Tip: The jungle rooms are great so I would not pay extra for an ocean front. The wildlife and sounds fro...

Overall, the room were spacious, nice, clean & kitchen was very well equipped. Love the washer & dryer, although we had alot of difficulty getting washer to work with heavy items like jeans. We used this as a timeshare exchange & wonder if we were made to wait on this account; we arrived a little early & although check in was 4p, we had to wait till 430 to get our room assignment, dispite many others who checked in early as we were waiting. When we asked for a late check out were told we needed to ask with housekeeping, they gave us 1 hr extra, but at 20 minutes after 10 the front desk called to remind us that check out was 10 & they didn't seem to care that we were given a little extra time.
There definately was a continuous hum, like a fan that could not be turned off in the bathrooms, which also blew cold air into the bathrooms & we could not turn it off or block the cold air.
Location was quiet & private, but had to drive or walk a mile to beach; & property was clean.
Frustrated that along with Daily resort fee, also charged $75 additional, up front resort fee for equipment we didn't use, internet that was slow, & still had to pay for daily newspaper & when we went to office to use printer to print airline boarding passes.
This would not be beach front property, but great whale watching site, it you can be om a room that faces the ocean. Car would be essential to an island like this, if you want to get to the beach.

We were pleasantly suprised after arriving in our condo at the cliffs on April 21, 2012. We were thinking this timeshare exchange would be mediocre and be the downside of our trip and were we pleasantly suprised! We were on the third floor in a 1 bedroom with loft which was plenty of space for at least 6 people with no crowding. The loft has two queen beds and there are two full bathrooms.

They offer a list of daily activities that you can participate in daily---some free, some for fees. They are able to setup most excursions listed in all tourbooks and websites. One of our concerns is that the units were not air conditioned and we were worried we would be hot. However, that was not the case at all. Many nights we had to keep the windows closed because the ocean breeze was too much. It is an quiet resort on the same main road as many resorts such as the Westin. The kitchens are filled with excellent quality dishes, and include any items you have in your personal kitchen at home. They even thought of blenders and shredders. The pots and pans are commercial quality and even though we are not on the ocean, we have a lush tropical view. The cheap looking wicker furniture we saw on some of these postings is NOTHING like what is in our condo. Perhaps they are different, but ours look like the professional pictures listed on the resorts main website.

We were upset because we were placed in building 2---as far away from the ocean as you can almost get on the property, but it has truly been a wonderful stay her. We are on the end and watch the beautiful birds, (and the crazy rooster that crows non-stop in the morning). We would certainly return here in the future!

We booked via Expedia and were assigned Unit 4205 which was spacious and looked like the owner had furnished it with a view to living there themselves.
The washer/drier was very useful and the kitchen had everything we needed though a few pots and pans were not clean.
There resort seems well run.
There is a nice quiet beach with a mountain back drop at the St Regis, around a 20 min walk from the Cliffs. There is a supermarket at Princeville but we did our main shop at Kapaa on the way up which was cheaper. However, I found the small supermarket in Hanelei seemed to be cheaper than the Princeville supermarket when we popped in to get a few items.
Hanelei town is small and pretty and has a nice cafe (sorry can't remember the name).
You do need a car if you stay at the Cliffs. Looking at other condos and hotels in the Princeville Resort, the Cliffs appear to have a good view and a good price.
At sunset walk to the edge of The Cliffs ( at bulding 8 & 9) for a great sunset view and whale spotting.
We preferred the north coast over the south coast and luckily it didn't rain much whilst we were there, only a few short showers.
The cliffs are well placed for visiting the Botanic Gardens and Ke'e Beach at the west end of the north shore and the Light house in the West end of the north shore.
We opted to take a Na Pali coast tour from the South as there was more variety in operator and were told that the swells in the north may have been preventing the operation of the north shore tours.

Room Tip: All the units appear to be different. We were in unit 4205. This was noton the ocean front as buildi...

Had a lovely stay through an rci timeshare exchange. The pool area was never crowded and the units spacious. We loved the peaceful location. My only gripe was that the bed in the master bedroom was not comfortable and I woke up with a neck ache every morning from the terrible pillows. Wish they had a couple different ones like most hotels.

What a wonderful place to call home while on Kauai! Everyone smiles and makes you feel like family here. Definitely go to the orientation when you arrive because they definitely bring good quality companies to share with you. The activities crew are so friendly and helpful. Make sure you use them to ask ANYTHING. We dealt with Sonja (sp?) the most and loved her! the condo was really nice, the pool is small but I liked that they had an adults only area to escape the little ones having fun in the pool. Everything was really clean and when we had a problem with our tv maintenance was at our door in minutes to replace it. I loved that it was in the North Shore. We had planned a lot of our activities before we arrived and mistakenly did a lot of them on the south shore. We had wished that we had planned all our activities on the North Shore because it is quieter and a little more beautiful, I thought! CHECK OUT Kayak Hanalei at the Hanalei Activity center they are the nicest and do a lot of great adventures! I love that they are a family owned local company :D
