“Heaven on Earth”
Reviewed 7 May 2014

The Cliffs at Princeville is the quintessential location for North Shore visitors. There are all the amenities one needs to experience the tranquility of the Kauai. The proximity to beaches and hiking trails is superb. For those looking to remain on the property, the pools, tennis court, grills, putting greens and croquet grounds offer plenty to do.

The 1 bedroom unit is furnished tastefully. The essential elements are all there for entertaining others or hosting a romantic dinner. The grounds are immaculate and the staff is the best I have ever encountered. For those looking for space to spread out, the units are more than ample. With two bathrooms, a full kitchen, dining area and living room, these units spoil you from ever wanting to stay in a hotel room or suite again.

For those looking for outings, there are plenty of opportunities to explore Kauai by foot, horse, boat, bike or helicopter. The beaches are beautiful and the scenery is spectacular.

I warn you, once you stay at The Cliffs, you will have a new yardstick to compare all other locations by.

Room Tip: Buildings 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 for great views. Buildings 1, 2 and 3 for peace and quiet.

Our unit 4201 building 4 was awesome with an ocean view, two bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen close to everything and very comfortable. Staff was very professional and helpful (Sabrina, Sarah, Desiree' and others. Activities presentation was extremely helpful and the evening reception was very well done. Only regret is that we would have liked to stay longer.

We stayed a week during April. The grounds and 1 bedroom unit were clean and well maintained. The unit was very spacious. Kitchen was stocked well. One thing I did not like about the unit was that it was a handicap room so there was a bench in the shower and light switch was low along with the sink. I just have a thing about a handicap room when I'm not handicapped. We did not have an ocean view and had heard that the ocean view was only available for timeshare owners, and rightfully so if they are all booked up but there were some that was empty while we were there. The front desk and concierge staff were great and very helpful in planning our week. I thought the swimming pool was a little small for the size of complex, but we where not there to be by the pool so it was not that big a deal. They do ask you for 90 minutes of your time to listen to their timeshare offerings but was no pressure. We chose not to do the presentation.

Aloha,

Thank you for taking the time to write of your stay. I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us. Thank you also for your feedback on our ADA unit. The Cliffs is a mixed use property consisting of timeshare, long term renters as well as whole unit owners. Of complex 130 are timeshare units. This maybe why some of the units appeared not to be occupied during your stay. I was very happy to read your comments about our staff. I think they are pretty fantastic!

Thanks again for staying with us and do hope you will come see us again.

We had a 1-bedroom on the first floor of bldg. 4, and had a partial ocean view. Very nice to just walk straight out to the grill, or access the pool and "library" right across the street. Kitchen was pretty well-equipped and we cooked a number of meals for 4 there. Furnishings were lovely and for once there was lots of storage in the bedroom. Housekeeping couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. The units have 2 bathrooms, both small and both with tub/showers. The ability to get a breeze through the unit was excellent, and two ceiling fans were just right. We didn't miss the AC at all. A couple of hooks for clothes or towels would have been nice, but overall this was an excellent place to stay in Princeville. Some units have no view at all, though, so we were lucky. Ask for bldgs 6, 7, or 8 for the best chance of a killer ocean view. Ask for an upper floor unit (many are privately owned but there are a few available) if you don't want people walking right next to your bedroom door (which is open to catch the breeze).

Room Tip: Ask for bldgs 6, 7, or 8 for the best chance of a wonderful ocean view. Some view rooms also availa...

We stayed @ The Cliffs for a week, and had a 3rd floor 1 bedroom place with a loft. The unit (building 4) was very clean & spacious with 2 full baths & 2 flat screen TV's. The view from the livingroom lanai was of the ocean & grassy area. We saw many whales breaching all week long. The lanai in the bedroom made for a great cross breeze so air conditioning wasn't needed. The island of Kauai isn't that big, so the location on the North Shore wasn't a problem to get to any of our excursions anywhere on the island. The Concierge (especially Sabrina) was EXTREMELY helpful in planning our excursions and giving advice about what to see and do on the island. The pool was nice, especially the hot tubs, since it wasn't that hot out. There is so much to see and do on Kauai and The Cliffs is an awesome place to stay.

We've done so many beach vacations, and, if you're planning to spend the bulk of your days tanning, they're certainly convenient.

But, as we've found that 3 or 4 hours on the sand is plenty, we've moved on to places like The Cliffs that offer dynamic views. They really take advantage of their location, perched on the Princeville cliiffs above the Pacific, and we saw whales every day. To make the whale watching even better, they loan binoculars and have a huge row of Adirondack chairs lined along the cliffs.

The Units: The photos didn't do justice to these tropical plantation style retreats. Lanais off the living room and bedroom (in our 1 bedroom), a smart layout and attractive up-to-date furnishings and art make this a wonderful home away from home. Unfortunately, the bathrooms are unworthy of a gold crown rated resort. Cramped and outdated, they feel like they were airlifted from Motel 6.

The Grounds: Lushly landscaped and well maintained. But are they attractive enough to warrant their own botanical tours? Meh.

The Pools. Great little zero entry kitty pool attached to the main pools. Love the use of lava rocks and waterfalls, and the hot tubs were great -- strong jets and hot enough that you get overheated in 10 minutes.

The resort complex: Tennis courts, shuffle board, putting green, playground ... all well maintained. But no bar. No restaurant. No shop. Seriously?

The vibe: Despite a weekly orientation (used to sell you on expensive excursions) and a mingle with free mai tais, there was little sense of community. Folks mostly kept to themselves, with the exception of some hot tube chit chat.

Elsewhere: The nearest beach is one of the best in the world: Hanalei Bay. You can access with a short drive to the neighboring resort: Hanalei Bay Resort. Park there and take the beach trail past the tennis courts.

The best snokling is at Tunnels. Hard to find. Look for the turnoff to the right just past the 8 mile marker.

Poi Pu is worth a trip for a nice popular beach, which also has decent snorkling.

Other musts: Wiameia Canyon (very little hiking necessary). And the Hanakapi'ai Trail at the end of the northwestern road is strenous, but worth it.

Loved the property. We were assigned our unit in Building #4 and thankfully had a peek a boo view of the ocean from our patio. The units are spacious and just lovely. The one bedroom units have two bathrooms which was wonderful when getting ready to go out. Both the living room and the bedroom have flat screen televisions. The living room has a very large sectional. Plenty of lighting AND a washer and dryer. The resort fee included wireless which was great. The kitchen had everything you would need. You can tell that this resort is well cared for. The pool is small and at this time of year, the water was frigid. For those who haven't done their Kauai homework, northern Kauai is cooler and moist. We were walking around in fleece jackets at night. They have chairs at the cliff where we had wine and whale watched. In the rules that management provides, they also ask their guests to not slam or let the doors close by themselves which I think is very thoughtful. I thought the check in was smooth and they give you a shopping card for the nearby grocery store for discounts. We had done most of our shopping at Costco and a grocery store in Kapaa on our way from the airport in Lihue. Tour book said it was slightly cheaper in Kapaa. The units also have DVD players and you can rent movies at the Red Box at the grocery store. There is no air conditioning which is fine by us. We enjoyed our stay very much.

Room Tip: Most of the buildings do not have an ocean view but all units have either a patio or balcony.
