We were looking for the Rustic Vintage Hawaiian experience and we did get that. Considering that these were the former homes of the sugar plantation workers, I will never again take a spoonful of sugar for granted. The metal roof made the cottage extremely hot inside, almost unbearable. Although there were ceiling fans, they did not cool the rooms. We asked for a window fan or AC and the staff said none were available. The onsite restaurant suddenly stopped serving meals with no explanation to staff or guests. There was no apparent manager onsite to ask where everyone was. Very few cottages were rented and this was high season ! Not sure what is happening here but something is.

Room Tip: As close to the ocean as possible to catch a cool breeze.

Randall Y, General Manager at Waimea Plantation Cottages, responded to this reviewResponded 21 August 2013

Thank you for your comments on your recent stay. Our property is in a very peaceful setting along the beach with 60 individual cottages spreadout on 27 acres. The result is that, even when we are full, guests find our property setting private and relaxing. I am pleased to say that we have been averaging near 80% occupancy from Aug 1st through 20th and year-to-date have a much higher occupancy than the average of hotels on Kauai. We recently closed the restaurant on Aug 1st for transition to a new restaurant operator. We expect to re-open the restaurant in a couple of months after some renovations and improvements and will be offering an even better dining experience for all customers. Meanwhile, there are several dining options in Waimea Town, including Wrangler's Steak House. If you are looking for the Manager, please don't hesitate to inquire as I am usually on property 6 days per week, though sometimes in meetings. Aside from some planned improvements in the cottages and a scheduled chicken round-up, it is business as usual at Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages. Enjoy the historic plantation experience!

I loved what an earlier reviewer said - perfect for those who prefer tranquility over bling. This is my second trip to Kaua'i. I loved the first trip too - Poipu condo, just lovely. But this is so special. Having a little cottage all to ourselves is magical. The lanai has a view of a grassy open area with the occasional amazing banyan tree, and the ocean in the distance - you can hear the surf from here too. The cottage is charming with everything we need - we love it so much we almost hate to go out to see the sights (but we did go to Waimea canyon and to Allerton gardens). Waimea town is like beach towns we see in our home state of Oregon - and we just love the west side of the island - no traffic, no rush. There are cottages of all sizes. Ours is small and cozy, but we've seen large family groups having a great time in the large cottages. The pool is near the beach and is very nice. I rated sleep quality a little lower just because of those enthusiastic roosters at all times of the night - but we actually even found them charming. The nearly constant breeze was sufficient AC for us, though our unit does have an AC unit in the bedroom. I just couldn't bear to turn it on and mar the nature sounds. We have a nice tv but to tell you the truth we have hardly had it on - again, just sitting out on the lanai and watching the birds, enjoying the gorgeous trees and flowers, and feeling the breeze with a nice beverage - far superior to anything on tv!

This is not a resort-y experience. It is more home-y. I find it incredible to experience a quiet cottage on the ocean in Hawaii - I just didn't know options like this even existed. That is why we are just loving it and I am quite sure we will be back. We are already planning our next visit.

Room Tip: As we walked around we noticed that the cottages straight out from the reception area, to the ocean, seemed like the nicest ones.

My family and I just spent 8 days at the Cottages. There were just four of us including our two kids, a teenager and a 5 year old. We were situated in, after some consideration, probably one of the best cottages on the property. Ocean views and literally a 15 second walk to the pool.

The cottage was definitely… rustic. Very old fashioned, very island-esque. No AC. This was usually okay through the night (from around 10pm to 8am), but once it starts to warm up, it gets incredibly hot and stuffy. The beds weren't the most comfortable things ever, but they were decent. The cottage also had a full kitchen, living room and two bathrooms. The baths were great- fully equipped to handle our 5 year old's nightly routine. The kitchen met all of our needs as well. There was also a barbecue outside of our unit that we had easy access to. Only problem with this was that we had to go buy our own charcoal, matches, etc. Not exactly what you want to hear at 7pm right as you're getting ready to put the steaks on.
The nightly skies were gorgeous. The cottages don't exactly face West so you can't actually see the sunset, but they face South, so you can kind of see the lovely skies created by the sunset. The starry skies though, those were absolutely lovely. With no large lights around, the view of our galaxy was very clear.
The pool is a decent size, around 4 feet deep all around. Sun chairs all around the pool facing inwards. A small pool just beside the big one is meant for smaller children. 1-2 feet deep there. The cottages also have a beach volleyball court and a large shuffleboard area. No volleyball supplied. The ocean that the cottages lay right in front of has signs all over it warning against swimming in the water. I actually did swim in it a few times, and it was quite fun. But the water is no place for anyone but a good swimmer to spend time. The shore isn't a place you want to hang out either.
The cottages were well situated. We spent our time touring the South and Western Areas of the island, going into the Canyon, and doing a couple touristy trips. With it being a short drive anywhere you want, the location is pretty good. Of course, i assume this would be the same as any hotel on the island. It's a pretty small island. But you did have easy access to the town of Waimea (5 minute walk).
So from this point on, just with the accommodation, access to the rest of the island, pool, etc. the cottages were fine. Not too exciting, but good in their own rustic way.
HOWEVER:
No one seems to advertise the roosters and chickens skipping around the area. Having been to the remainder of the island, it's obvious that there is some sort of issue. But it's okay because they aren't in huge numbers flocking everywhere. Well, in these cottages you are surrounded day and night. The idiot birds start crowing at 3am and don't stop until 7pm. They're loud obnoxious, and they seem to absolutely love the area. In the end, my daughter had to buy a pair of ear plugs because she hadn't more than 8 of the last 72 hours. We asked the management to do something, but really, it's too big of a job to expect them to clear the roosters out for one family. But it definitely IS AN ISSUE.
So there you have it. Rustic accommodations, okay experience, but the roosters were a huge issue.
We would probably not go back.

Room Tip: Closest to the pool is best, that's the most central area. Also try to get a unit that is closest to the ocean, that way you have a view of the water.

Thank you for your comments on your recent stay at our property. Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages is truly an historic experience with the opportunity to stay in an authentic, restored plantation cottage. As you mentioned, the chickens can be found just about everywhere on Kauai. Several times during the year, we round up as many of the chickens as we can on the hotel property and relocate them to an undeveloped parcel of land owned by the company that owns the hotel. We are just coming up to our next "round up". Mahalo!

We had an opportunity to stay at this place when we went to Kauai for a fundraiser golf tournament at St. Theresa School, Kekaha, Kauai. There were 6 of us staying at the Plantation Cottages.

The layout of the property is excellent. Everything seems to be "right there" - walking to the restaurant, going for stroll, heading to the beach, going for a dip in the swimming pool, etc. We used their BBQ pits to prepare hamburgers & hotdogs - very convenient. Their daily linen service was consistent. Great customer service! All their cottages come with a complete kitchen - the appliances, plates, utensils, etc.

We're looking forward to a family reunion in the near future at this very same location.

This is probably nearing my 10th visit to the Cottages and each time there is the adventure of wondering which cottage I'll be staying in. I have never ever been disappointed. All have had privacy, a bath tub and glorious views (no cars!). The location guarantees warm dry weather and guests who prefer tranquility over bling. This is a perfect complement to the Vegas-like charms of Waikiki. And I love Oahu but for me, this is the 'real' Hawaii. Use the cottages as a base for trips to the Waimea Canyon or Polihale, or do as I do; come here with a stack of books and a load of urban stress, sit on the lanai, watch the chickens, admire the wondrous trees and leave 15 years younger and happier!

Room Tip: All cottages are different. Remember direct ocean front might mean 24/7 wave action so it might not be worth the additional price.
