Waimea Plantation Cottages
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 14 August 2014

It depends on what you're looking for. As other reviewers have stated, this is a very different kind of property than the big resort hotels like the Sheraton or Marriott back in Poipu. WPC consists of a collection of wooden, frame construction, 1940s vintage cottages laid out a beautiful beachfront setting, just on the western edge of the village of Waimea. The cottages vary in size, and are all the former living quarters of sugar plantation workers; these cottages were moved here after the sugar plantations shut down. This is definitely a ‘get away from it all’ place, but the most important thing you need to understand is that these cottages are RUSTIC. Other reviewers have mentioned bugs and spiders (not just webs) and if that sort of thing bothers you, don’t stay here. On my most recent stay I shared my cottage with at least three small gekkos. Since you will have your windows open at all times to get whatever breeze might exist, you will also experience a LOT of bird noise, most notably from the free range chickens that are literally everywhere. Many times roosters have awakened me in the middle of the night, because they don’t necessarily wait until dawn to crow. Some reviewers have also said the furniture is worn (true) and the places are clean (in my experience, sometimes yes, sometimes no). Some cottages have a window air conditioner in the bedroom, others do not, and it gets stifling hot during the daytime without a/c. All the units I’ve seen or stayed in have a full kitchen with stove, microwave and full sized refrigerator (no dishwashers) and the units come equipped with a basic set of cooking utensils, pots and pans, plates, glasses and silverware. My cottages have had regular 12 cup coffeemakers, not those cheesy one cup drippers most big hotels have switched to. Maid service comes every few days. Some units are larger than others, and there are a couple that are actual houses. They all have nice porches with outdoor furniture. There is a pool, a sand volleyball pit, a shuffleboard court and of course the beach, although the beach right at the cottages isn’t a very good one for swimming, because the Waimea river just to the east dumps muddy water into the ocean here. More on beaches below. The property also has a sports bar, Kalapaki Joe’s, which is a typical sports bar with good beer and fair food (see my separate review). If an outdoorsy, rural, rustic place to get away from it all is what you are looking for then this is the place for you, but be aware of what you’re getting and what the local area has to offer. Waimea Canyon is the only real attraction on this side of the island. Now about those beaches: There is a nice beach at MacArthur Park on the west side of Kekaha, about 3.9 miles west of WPC, or you can drive all the way to Polihale State Park at the end of the road to the west. It’s about 13.5 miles to Polihale. I do not recommend trying to go to Polihale unless you have a four wheel drive vehicle. The gravel/dirt road suddenly turns into deep soft sand, and you will get stuck. Going the other direction from WPC (back toward Lihue), you can find nice beaches in Poipu, which is about 18.5 miles away.

Room Tip: Make sure to ask for a cottage with an air conditioner

Quiet, calming, relaxed. Come to this side of the island for more sun and less traffic and little that is touristy and kitschy. If you are looking for the Hawaiian "night life" this is not the spot for you. However, if you are going to Hawaii to truly "get away from it all" then this fills the bill perfectly. Nearby the cottages are amazing beaches and scenic attractions like incomparable Waimea Canyon. We loved our cottage and saved money by barbecuing fresh fish on our grill and then spending time walking along the beach. The office staff was great and very helpful. Our cottage was exceptionally clean and well appointed. We had a dream vacation at the Waimea Cottages and are already saving for our next trip there.

Stayed here with my parents and boyfriend one night. I am 4th generation Filipino-American whose family immigrated to Hawaii to work on pineapple plantations. My father said the way the cottage was refurbished was eerily close to the way he remembered the actual plantation homes of his grand-uncles and aunts. Unfortunately, we didn't get a room w/ A/C during a fairly warm summer evening, but the pool was a help, and the winds did cool the house down overnight. Happily the back porch and backyard were a nice, comfortable, cooler place to hang out. The house was so cute and the provided toiletries were great. Having the beach right there to walk to and listen to the ocean was wonderful. Lazing in the hammock was my favorite. The whole property made me immediately relaxed and feeling like I was in another time. I do recommend this property, with the right expectations (and get a unit w/ A/C if your family is sensitive to the weather). Also, Waimea town is pret-ty sleepy, so plan to hang in using the kitchen, or at the hotel restaurant which isn't bad. Wranglers Steakhouse is nearby for dinner too, and has delicious entrees (though temper expectations for the sad "salad bar").

Room Tip: Get a room with A/C if you visit in the summer and are sensitive to heat.

We just returned this morning from a two night stay in cottage #75. The bedroom is showcased in one of the management photos. The cottage was very sweet and very clean. The historic feel of our cottage was fun but would not want to stay longer than two nights due to the lack of things to do in Wiamea. For the price, we would have preferred to stay longer in Poipu and cut our trip to Wiamea to only a one night stay. I also was not aware of the fact that the beaches along that coast are not suitable for swimming so that put us at the pool the whole time we were outdoors. The pool was shared with about eight very loud children who were streaming in and out of a cottage located at the pool the whole time we were there. There seemed to be a lot of visitors at this cottage because there were several cars and trucks parked there, near the pool area. We didn't feel like were were at a resort at all. If the price were reduced, I could see this as a funky family destination, but to market it a resort didn't really work for us. Since we had a little girl along the experience was fairly good.

Room Tip: Get A-C, stay away from pool in case there are a lot of kids visiting from town.

This is the place to stay when you want an authentic, relaxing, peace filled experience on Kauai. It is a very different type of resort than the Hyatt, Mariott, etc. It is amazingly quaint and charming. We had such a great family experience. I truly felt the heart of Kauai. We loved playing in the pool (perfect for my kids ages...3-12), playing outside in the grassy field, and drinking our morning coffee on the outdoor lanai. The smell of plumeria and the sound of the ocean was delightful. There were many chickens and roosters that beckoned us awake early...but we found it charming and felt it added to the atmosphere. We slowly enjoyed our morning coffee and then got an early day to sightseeing...perfect! I can't imagine staying anywhere else! Just bring bug spray...the mosquitos are a bit ferocious!!!

greetings,

family of four from Montréal stayed at waimea plantation cottage for seven nights in June 2014.

we booked an oceanfront two bedrooms cottage thru the hotel website.

the property grounds are absolutely beautiful. large park like area right on the waimea beach, massive trees all over the place, banyan, monkeypod trees, etc...cottages are scattered all over the property which has a very quiet and family buzz, no noise, super quiet, just hear the waves during the night. the site itself is absolutely awesome.

we were assigned cottage 69 right next to the pool. the cottage is awesome. two large bedrooms, two very large bathrooms, a nice kitchen area fully equipped and a living area.

a very large balcony with direct ocean view, absolutely marvelous...large japanese like thick wooden sliding doors to access the large balcony from either the bedrooms or the main living room.

the cottage itself was very roomy, very comfortable, very clean. Yes you are in the tropics...so yes you will find some ants, some spiders, some beetles, etc..even some nice gecko sometimes in the house...but that`s life in the tropics, if you can`t deal with this, than don`t book this property !

we asked to get a BBQ so that every evening we could cook our nice meals outside with ocean views and nice sunsets...how better could this be ?

since we were next to the pool (like litterally a few meters away...) we were getting the wifi signal from the pool network, very convenient.

the cottage had A/C units in both bedrooms and this was definitely necessary to have good sleep quality because it is hot and dry on the South west coast of Kauai. Without A/C it would have been difficult to get good sleep quality. I don`t know if all cottages have A/C, so check with the property when you do the booking.

staff is very nice and helpful, every three days they service your cottage and do some basic cleanup.

the hammoc right next by the beach laid between two coconut trees is just superb, my two Young adults would be running mad dash to the hammoc to relax and do some reading.

with the rental you get a card to rent DVDs from some sort of automatic machine which we used most of the evenings.

the beach itself is not swimmable (big waves and surf, reddish water due to the nearby waimea river run-off) but the beach itself is very quiet, you can take long long stroll and you will meet a jogger here and there and or a local doing some fishing, but that`s it.

If you want to swim, you need to drive 15 minutes to salt pond beach park in hanapepe, there you have a beach lifeguarded where you can normally swim and do some boogie boarding.

this is a very good base if you want to explore the waimea canyon area and the koke e national park, we did several day hikes in the park, and those were really superb hikes (but demanding, lots of elevation gains and losses, so this is some serious hiking).

you can as well quite easily reach the poipu area in 30-40 minutes drive where you have several interesting beaches, nature walks and golf courses - the poipu bay golf resort is fantastic...

the only reason for not giving 5 stars was that we had some issues with the internet service - was down 24 hours... and the price tag for the rental is somehow on the high side, but these are my only drawbacks, me and my family would go back there any time with great pleasure.

We were excited to stay at the plantation cottages based on the pictures they show. This is false advertisement! We booked a two bedroom cottage, what we got was a cottage with a bed in every room, each with its own large web and spider - cottage #31: Arachniphobia!
We were moved to cottage B- a little better but not much. Still lots of spiders, shower stalls were comparable to shower stalls found at a camp ground.
We looked at cottage D-no air conditioning, small rooms, and the hallway door was broken and up against the wall. Again, not very well maintained like cottage #31.
We were moved to cottage #68-This was a little better. This one had a Victorian feel to it with the old furniture, so we decided to stay. BUT it did not have a full kitchen like the pictures show. It has a full stove and fridge. No cupboards for storage, the sink and counter top was made of sheet metal. There is a butcher block for a cook-prep station. Don't bother to take a bath in the master bathroom, the tub has a broken drain hole and won't fill up beyond 4 inches of water. The bathroom sinks are barely sitting on the pedestal and can be very dangerous. We were trying to give this place a chance and stayed. Our first night was not bad. Since this cottage does not have AC, and would get hot as hell, the only option is to open all the windows. In doing that, be prepared not to sleep as you become a feast for the Mosquitos and all kinds of flying insects that easily get through the "Original screens from WWII." No matter what we did, nothing worked to keep them away: a ton of repellant, the bent fly swatter in the room they give you, and masking tape in an attempt to cover the holes in the screen. what they don't tell you is that you will need a fogger, mosquito net to cover your bed, cortisone, Benadryl, mosquito repellant and to sleep fully dressed! We were up at 3 am killing Mosquitos, which by now were very full with my blood! Each one killed left a mark on the wall. Marks are still there. Don't let the pictures fool you into staying here. The grounds are beautiful, the cottages are the nice from the outside, but if I wanted to deal all these problems, we would have gone camping instead. The other reviews stating ALL cottages have been remodeled and have a full kitchen is untrue. Those people are either relatives or were paid to give this place a good review. Shame on Aston for false advertising these cottages as something beautiful when they are a true nightmare! For a little more money ($25.00), we got a beautiful 2bedroom condo in Princeville with a breathtaking ocean view!

Room Tip: Ask for the room they show in the pictures. If unavailable, leave and go elsewhere .
