“Polynesian Paradise”
Reviewed 30 December 2013

We have stayed at Maui Tradewinds three times, the fourth time just this last November. What a joy it is to have Maui Tradewinds as our temporary home when we are in Hawaii. The house was immaculate and stocked with everything we needed (clean linens constantly, our favorite teas, our favorite cereal and crackers, extra pillows, cleaning supplies if we wanted, beach necessities, everything was provided). The view off the deck is absolutely gorgeous—we had dinner/snacks there every evening. Turn your head slightly to the right; there’s the ocean. The bed (master bedroom) was so comfortable, it was like sleeping on a cloud. The location of Maui Tradewinds can’t be beat—close to Paia (interesting shops, Mana Foods (best co-op in the world—their salad bar has the most flavorful vegetables I’ve ever tasted), surfing, turtle-watching by the ocean every evening, and world-class restaurants (think Mama’s Fish House, and then don’t just think it, go there)). Even though Maui Tradewinds is close to amenities, it’s also extremely quiet. Very peaceful sleeping.
The hot tub out on the deck (overlooking paradise) is comfortable and CLEAN. Dinner can be grilled behind the cottage, complete with tiki torches. Inside the house, tap water goes through an extra filter. So in case you usually drink bottled water, here you don’t have to (an extra benefit).
Because of all of Bev and David’s attention to detail, all we had to do was relax and soak up the Polynesian paradise. The relaxed state-of-mind induced at Maui Tradewinds lasted all the way through the holiday season for me. Can’t wait to go back!!!

I have been to Maui many times and have come to love the Haiku Upcountry area away from all the high rise hotels in the West. Having lived on Oahu and traveled to most of the other islands, I find Maui the most beautiful. And I have now found the most beautiful way to enjoy this island: by staying at the Maui Tradewinds. To be able to sit in any room and look out over the jungle, up the slopes of Haleakala, see the stars at night and birds by day...this is my idea of heaven. The hosts, Bev and David, designed a lovely home away from home with every amenity imaginable. You really feel like you are being "hosted" when you are there with their attention to detail and beauty and their personal warmth and consideration for your well being. Come prepared to stay; after a few trips into the more touristy areas you might decide, like I did, to unplug and give yourself over to island time.

Over the last 35 years of vacationing in the islands, we have stayed in a variety of cottage rentals. We prefer the "aloha" local experience to staying in a resort. Bev and David's Tradewinds Suite, is without comparison. The privacy, the spa under the stars, the ability to barbecue fresh, local fish in your own yard and then eat under the light of 3-sets of Tiki Torches as well as lounging on a hammock for two. Best part- showering outdoors - again in you own private setting with a 180 degree view of the Real Maui. Immediately upon our return in October, we booked another 15-days for May 2014- Maui Tradewinds No Ka Oi!

This was my first visit to Maui. I found and booked the StarWind Cottage online, and arrived with fingers crossed hoping the reality would be as good as the photos and reviews promised. It exceeded my expectations. What a great place -- airy, clean, beautiful views, and comfortable, pleasingly attractive furnishings. It even passed my personal litmus test, with a bedside lamp I could read by!

The hosts have thought of and provided just about every amenity a guest could possibly need. Picnic cooler? -- check. Scotch tape? -- check. Cotton blanket, since I'm sensitive to acrylic? -- check. Coffee filters? -- check. You name it, Bev and David have thought of it, and it will be found in a logical spot right where you might keep the item at home.

As others have commented, Bev and David are the perfect hosts. They checked in occasionally to see if we needed anything, were friendly and responsive when we had questions, but were never intrusive. The entire visit felt like staying in the home of friends. We enjoyed all their suggestions and recommendations -- Mana Foods in Haiku for delicious deli takeout, the Saturday swap meet, Holo Holo Private Taxi Tours for a fun and informative afternoon tour, Troy for in-room massage.

For our last evening, we cancelled dinner reservations at Mama's Fish House, preferring to enjoy one last sunset on the deck with Mana Food takeout. All in all, the absolutely perfect getaway vacation spot. I can't imagine staying anywhere else when I return.

We only booked a few days here, as we weren't sure what to expect, but wish we had booked it for our whole holiday.
The setting is beautiful and quite private. You can watch the sun come up behind the mountains, and set behind the West Maui mountains. Haleakela seems at your fingertips. It was lovely to laze in the hot tub and star-gaze.
The cottage is beautifully decorated and very clean. Everything you could want is there. We even had fruit from their own garden.
Bev and Dave are very friendly and do everything possible to make your stay enjoyable.
When we left, we came over to the west side of the island and didn't like it very much. We wanted to come right back, but alas! it was booked.

Tastefully decorated with beautiful green surroundings.Smoking is allowed on premises. Torches are lit upon phone call request. You will only have towels washed during your stay. Sheets will be removed upon request and you make the bed with the clean sheets that are left behind. All kitchen appliances that have a cord are outside-coffee maker, toaster, etc.Pots and pans are in the kitchen-very inconvenient for cooking. The foam pad on the bed is "GROSS". Tiny ants are very hard to control-crawl on food and counter. Hostess will call on the phone when she is not feeling well to tell you she is taking the day off. The hot tub and outdoor shower are exposed to the owners windows. I do have pictures that I have taken and will share if you send an email. Maui is expensive and I will try to be helpful in your planning.

David and B, Owner at Maui Tradewinds, responded to this review, 10 December 2013
We certainly regret this guest’s dissatisfaction, but this disappointing review poses a dilemma for us. Etiquette, in the hospitality field, generally obliges management to respond by publishing an apology for the guest’s poor experience, promising to use their feedback for improvement, and refraining from debating the validity of their criticism. In this case, it may be appropriate to depart from that formula.

These guests stayed with us for two weeks. From time to time, during the course of their visit, we asked if they needed anything. Their consistent reply was that they were enjoying themselves, and there were no complaints. However, early in their stay, they asked us to remove the foam mattress top from their bed, because they wanted a firmer sleeping surface.

When they checked out, the guests volunteered that they had “a great stay”, and thanked us for sharing our home with them. When we inquired as to whether anything didn’t meet their expectations, the only thing they mentioned was their dislike for the plastic mattress casing. That casing is helpful for sanitation, in the tropics, and it is normally covered by a foam mattress top. Accommodating the guest’s request to remove the foam top had exposed the mattress casing.

Instead of replying to each point in detail, we direct the reader to previous reviews, which will provide an adequate perspective for interpreting this guest’s comments.

Relax. This is all about relaxing. Bev and David are the perfect hosts. They provide the peace and serenity and yet anticipate every need. Their place in the hills (just a mile up hill from the ocean) is so beautiful. Spotlessly clean, meticulously appointed, and with views of the mountain and the Ocean is is hard to imagine any place better on this earth. This was our third trip to Bev and David's. The first trip to Maui was to the Four Seasons. Yes, the Four seasons is nice, but can you really relax when you are paying those rates? We will return for a fourth, fifth, sixth, and so on adinfintum
