“Perfect North Shore Cottage”
Reviewed 24 April 2008

Pure relaxation and the most peaceful week of my life. I stayed in the Cottage which has a view to the ocean. The finer details of the artwork on the interior walls are an inspiration. The owners understand the essence of life and my accomodations were an oasis of tranquility. The sounds of the wind in the trees were like the waves of the ocean. Ho'okipa beach is the greatest show on earth for windsurfing and it's just down the road. Great communication with owners to set up a short notice stay. The whole experience was ideal. We've visited Maui many times and this was the first time we've stayed on this side of the island and not in a resort area. We loved it here - even though it's a little out of the way, it's more than worth it for the peace and tranquility. The Hibiscus apartment was roomy and clean, and had all the amenities you need, including a fully equipped kitchen, which we utilized often. The ocean view lanai was lovely, and Anjali's artistic touches were fun. She and Ken were very accomodating and greeted us with fresh fruit from their beautiful tropical grounds. We also enjoyed the neighborhood, which was strictly residential and provided some great walks past lovely homes and empty fields. This is the perfect antidote for traffic-y, over-built and over-priced West Maui. The small town of Paia has some good restaurants and shops, and Mana Foods is a terrific health food store with great produce and a deli with lots of yummy things for picnics and takeout. We also enjoyed Cafe Mambo - loved the curries. A great place to eat is Haillemaille General Store, close to Makawao, and Main Street Bistro in Kahului (stop for lunch on the way back from the Io Needle.) Another don't miss - Swap Meet in Kahului on Saturdays, next to the Post Office. Great crafts, produce, jewelry, etc and fantastic prices. We found the beaches (Baldwin, Baby, Hookipa) much more beautiful than West Maui, although they can be windy. Very fun trip to Tedeschi Winery - take your time, stop at Kula Lodge for lunch, check out the protea farm and lavender farm, and enjoy the upcountry scenery. The wines are not bad either! Beautiful views and another perspective of the island. The only thing to be aware of regarding this property is the apartment and studio are located in the downstairs portion of the home of the owners, which is not really clear from the description and photos. However this was not a problem as you still feel very private and Anjalie and Ken are very respectful of your privacy.

Myself and 3 other choir members spent the week of March 9-16th at the 2 bedroom Apartment at Hibiscus Hideaway - Beatiful tranquil spot with all required amenities, including a beautiful swimming pool and an excellent serene hostess in Anjeli-who also does a remarkably accurate palm reading!! It was a pleasure to stay at this location/Joan Turner

Our little Maui get-away was perfect - out of the the tourist zone, but within a 45 minute drive to Lahaina & beaches. It was easy to explore the volcano, nearby north shore scenic areas and the parts of Maui where ordinary Hawaiians live.

We loved our private lanai and the fact that you felt so removed from the two other units and the owners on the property - it felt like your own private retreat. The decore is unique and fun. We enjoyed the salt-water pool and of course the wonderful vista of the Pacific Ocean. A couple higher-end restaurants are 15-20 minutes away, plus some casual ones. The kitchen works for simple meals.

We are very grateful for this review.
We would like to add that these guests stayed in our smallest unit, the Swaying Palms studio. We are five to ten minutes from several North Shore beaches ,waterfalls, shopping and fine dining in the towns of Haiku, Paia and Makawao and 15 miles from the Kahului Int. airport on the road to Hana

We were so lucky to find Maui Ocean Breezes! We've just returned from our second trip to Maui. The first time we went, some 20 years ago, we loved the island, but felt that our stay on Kaanapali was a bit "artificial" compared to the rest of the island. Having traveled to other Hawaiian islands in the ensuing years, we decided to return to Maui, but wanted to experience a more laid back, non-resort stay.

The Hibiscus Hideaway at Maui Ocean Breezes was the perfect fit. Its location on the north side of the island got us away from the resort crowds and artificiality. The close-by towns of Paia and Haiku provided all the best food, without the resort costs. Little shops in town were fun to browse through, and the liveliness of the people in Paia perfectly balanced the peace and tranquility of our "home" just minutes away.

The Hibiscus Hideaway apartment was perfect for the two of us. A comfortable sitting area, kitchen, and beautiful bedroom, all of the amenities we needed or wanted, wonderful, whimsical decorating, and a fantastic patio outside with dining table, grill, and comfortable chairs for lazing the time away. Our hosts had beach gear available, and we took boogie boards, beach chairs and umbrellas with us for our forays to the beaches. It was great to come back to Ocean Breezes after a day of adventuring, take a swim in the gorgeous pool, and sit back and relax on your patio as the sun set.

Anjale and Ken were what I consider to be the perfect hosts. Anjale greeted us the first day with local fruits, and a great list of recommendations for food, fun, scenery, etc. Her one page list of recommendations was about all we needed to enjoy our stay. Another day, Ken was helping a neighbor pick some grapefruit from his small orchard, and the neighbor sent Ken back with some for his guests.

If we get a chance to return, I would love to stay much longer, truly make it my home for a month or more.
