The 2 bedroom, 2 bath Jasmine unit in which we stayed, was spacious, clean, and came with views beyond compare. We were met by Robyn who is both sweet and attentive. The landscaping on the property is as exquisite as an arboretum. You may even be lucky enough to stay while the horses are visiting. Robyn is VERY knowledgeable and helpful. The kitchen is well equipped with all you need. Enjoy! We did!

Ekena means Eden and it sure felt like we were staying in paradise while there. The immaculately groomed 8 acre property was filled with everything and more to delight the senses. The rainbow eucalyptus trees were so incredible with their many colors naturally occuring to create a rainbow pallet. Never have we experienced so many shades of green as we looked out over the mountains and landscape. It seemed the mountains would snag the clouds as they passed over and brought several showers that passed quickly leaving rainbows in their wake. And then there were the flowers; bright reds, deep oranges, pink and white and yellow, everywhere you looked. We loved watching the moving lawn ornaments (horses) each day, especially when the egrets would decide to ride on their backs. The Sea Breeze was without a doubt the most beautiful place we have ever stayed! It is an architectural wonder with vaulted ceilings crowned with cupolas in both the bedroom and living room. The sunken tub made soaking a delight. While a large dining room was available, we chose to eat all our meals out on the fabulous deck where a cloth covered table and chairs were provided. With the fully equiped kitchen, meals were easily prepared which both saved on eating out and afforded us a more spectacular view then any restuarant could offer. Ekena was the highlight of our trip and we are already planning to return.

Room Tip: Ekena only rents one of their units at a time so you do not have to be concerned about noises. You...

Ekena is up on a hillside overlooking a valley with the ocean below. What a view. We stayed at the Jasmine suite. It has an open, island feel with a grand room that includes the kitchen, dining and living areas, then a separate bedroom, bathroom area. It is modern and well maintained. The grounds are beautiful. There is a big balcony which, of course, also has that grand view. Robin, the manager was welcoming and helpful. We loved the place. It is a few miles out of the town of Hana, so you need your own car. Bring some groceries because you probably are going to want stay and cook in on occasion. The kitchen is well equipped.

Why go to the Hana area?

It's tropical, green and fresh, has natural beauty, fewer people, less traffic, a slower pace.
Lots to do; hiking, biking, beaches, birding (different from the 'dry' side of Maui; melodious laughing thrush, great frigate-bird, ruddy turnstone) If you want to be with people, and close to the night action (other than an owl calling), Ekena and Hana might not be the best choice for you.

We wanted to cycle the Hana roads (yes, the up and down single lane windey roads) so we stayed 4 nights in the Jasmine suite in December 2013.

Why we'd recommend Ekena and would return?

It is a true getaway. If you want a private, quiet, tranquil location, Ekena is the place to relax and recharge. High on the hill, the panoramic view from inside and from the wraparound deck is nonstop. Just look at the travellers' photos.

Inhale the fresh tropical surroundings, see birds (melodious laughing thrush, northern and redcrested cardinals, cattle egrets, japanese white-eye, house finch and nutmeg mannikin), photograph, explore the flowers and insects up close.

The Jasmine suite was incredibly spacious (just like in the pictures), larger than our home, clean, comfortable. Take advantage of the fully outfitted kitchen to cook your own meals and of the bathtub (with shower) which seems to be rare in Maui.

Cyclists can bike from the door, however riding back up the somewhat steep driveway was too great a challenge for me. Cycle until 11am with almost NO traffic, and if you cycle south, the traffic is even less. Be sure to wear a rear view helmet mirror to see the traffic coming from behind.

Hana, beaches and shops are just a short drive (or ride) away. There is a fruit stand close to Ekena as you turn off the highway.

The wonderful hosts, Robin and Gaylord live on-site. The service from out initial inquiry through booking and arrival was excellent. Robin was very accommodating to our special needs, and supplied complete directions and lots of suggestions for things to bring and to see. I will not forget that fabulous avocado that Robin delivered!

Aloha amazing bikers, and mahalo for your descriptive and appreciative review of the sights and sounds of Hana and of Ekena. The distances you covered on your bicycles during your stay with us were most impressive and we loved watching you set off on a new bike adventure every morning. Thank you for taking the time to let others know how much you enjoyed Ekena and I love your photo of the Laughing Thrush. We never tire of hearing their melodious songs starting and ending our days. We do hope to see you back in Hana when another bike trip calls to you. Mahalo, Robin

We return to Hana regularly to visit the pieces of our hearts that reside there, and Ekena now holds a couple of pieces! This property is outstanding, the view is spectacular, and the home is lovingly (and discreetly) cared for by the gracious Robin and Gaylord.
We witnessed not only daily rainbows which originated on the property, and ended on the neighboring property, but also a "rain band" on the surface of the ocean, a first for us!
That view stunned us into silence, and we were drawn to the lanai at all hours, to watch the water, the sky, the stars, the birds, all the surrounding natural beauty of Hana.
The house is impeccably clean and well-appointed. It strikes the balance of luxury and comfort.
The grounds are beautifully maintained, and we enjoyed exploring the property barefoot!
The location is perfect: close to "town" yet secluded up a private drive.
If you are looking for an intimate experience of old Maui, you will find it in Hana, and, if you are wise and lucky, you will stay at Hale Ekena. Aloha!

Room Tip: Both units highly recommended.

Mahalo dear guests for such a thoughtful and enthusiastic review. You clearly love and appreciate all that Hana offers and I do hope that you will return often in the future. We have been seeing more of the rainbow bands that you described and are enjoying this addition to the other beautiful things that we constantly witness around here. It was our pleasure to have you visit and we look forward to seeing you in the future. Mahalo and Aloha, Robin and Gaylord

I don't even know where to begin on this: We stayed here a couple of years ago (have reservations to return this coming April), and I, the wife, chose the location. It looked nice in the online pics, but I figured 'who cares, I'm just there to relax for a few days'....WHO CARES? ME! It turns out that this was the highlight of our entire trip. My mother is from Hawaii and I had originally made plans for a couple of my cousins to join us in Hana but they couldn't. So my husband and I went....what a joy!!! And what a surprise! We stayed in the lower level (Jasmine) and were just simply delighted! Also, the caretakers, Robin & Gaylord are wonderful.
Last year, we went back to Hawaii to see my family and my HIghschool friend joined us. We did not have time to really spend any time in Hana, sadly, but we enjoyed Ekena so much that we wanted to show it to her. The Proprietor, Robin, was so gracious about allowing us to show my friend their beautiful property and what to look forward to the next time she joins us. I cannot say enough good things about this. Yes, the pics are nice, but they do not do justice to this wonderful place!! If you stay here, you will NOT regret it!

We always enjoy getting away from Oahu where we live We had an amazing 3 day stay in the upstairs unit. Wrap around Lanai with unobstructed amazing views overlooking the Jungle and Ocean from the top of the hill. Truly a special place. Robin & Gaylord are great Hosts which give you your space. You feel alone in this peaceful place. Wainapa Black Sand Beach is just a few minute drive. Hana is another 5 minutes or so down the road. Spectacular Beaches & Hiking are all close by. Need to prepare and bring all your own food. BBQ'g on the Lanai is recommended. Nice Furnishings / Washer Dryer is huge plus. We would go back again.
