Let's start from the very beginning: we chose this hotel because we wanted to avoid a big and chaotic chain hotel to enjoy at its fullest our honeymoon trip.
As Travaasa belongs to the Preferred Boutique program that we extensively used before, we were so looking forward for the great and lovely tailor made service that a boutique hotel can deliver.

We then booked through our travel agent a garden cottage and added the meal plan for 150$ per person/night that would have included all the meals, soft drinks and snacks throughout the day. All-in, our 4 nights stay came up to a total of 3.000$.
I did email the hotel in advance to let them know we were on our honeymoon trip and to arrange transportation from the nearby airport.

Finally the day we land in Hana arrives! But, to our biggest surprise, no one was there waiting for us. As mobile phones don't work there, airport staff was kind enough to call the hotel and check if they were coming. She said they were on their way and it should have been fast as the hotel is just 7 minutes away.
After 20 minutes no one was showing up and the lady offered to call them again.
At the end, they eventually arrived almost 40 minutes after we landed and when we joked with the driver if they had forgotten about us, she coldly replied "Ah no, you know, it's Friday night and we are busy with other guests". I was a bit stoned at such an answer but decided to let it go: keeping honeymoon mood was more important than challenging a rude driver.

Checking-in was smooth, albeit no congrats or cheers for us being honeymooners as other hotels did along our trip. Still the property looked so beautiful, in its great green environment that we were so sure that we would have enjoyed our stay so much.

Let's talk about the room: it's like entering grandma country house with furniture and fabrics that look 20+ years old. That could be even fine (taste is so subjective) it it was clean: especially the bathroom was in poor conditions. Bathtub was partly black and the tiny shower didn't give a sense of clean at all, at point that wife just used it while wearing flip flops.

Still, honeymoon mood, we agreed grant everything else would have compensated this flaws: we were at travaasa to enjoy its location, tranquility and boutique hotel tailor made service.

Even at this they failed really badly:
- service at pool was almost non existent: we went there in the afternoon and no staff was around for almost two hours. We didn't know which loungers were free, nor did have any towel. Ended up after 20 minutes wait, we just found one last unused towel in the little cabana and grabbed a couple chair that look unoccupied.
- same happened on the pool bar: just a sign that they were busy assisting guest and to call whatever number to get help
- we asked concierge help about a SPA we read about on internet. He simply shrugged his shoulders saying he didn't know anything about it and when we asked him to help us finding out more, he stated that hotel policy is for him to give info/book just hotel facilities.
- last straw came ad dinner though: we were showed a table and sat down. After a good 20 minutes no one was taking care of us, we tried to catch a waitress's attention. Even before we could say anything she just said "I'm busy with other guests, please wait". That's was enough, especially because two of her colleagues were already preparing tables for breakfast. And to make experience more enjoyable, one of them threw leftover water from other guests' glasses into the plant next to us. Shocking.

That was enough. We went to front desk and requested to be contacted by a manager the very next morning. He did and - even if he didn't look too interested why two guests were willing to leave earlier - he helped us to do all the paperworks.
Before leaving, as lunch was already paid in our plan for that day, we requested the picnic box they offer as an alternative. After being scolded that such a request should be done minimum 3 hours earlier, they said it was impossible to accommodate our request as they were busy because over 100 Greyline tourist were going in for lunch. Probably I forgot to mention before but, yes, Travaasa the tranquility and serenity oasis that offer a peaceful environment away from big chain hotel, everyday accommodates tens of people that do the Road to Hana bus tours... Truly boutique hotel style. Especially when a customer pays 750$/night.

It would truly deserve just one point for rating. But the location is really amazing and so it's the property. Everything else is beyond terrible and reading other reviews and the answer managers give (you don't get connected with Hana) made us really happy when we left this hotel earlier.

Aloha maclover_it,

First of all, congratulations on your recent marriage! Hana and Travaasa Hana is a very magical place to celebrate this special occasion and unfortunately, this was not the case for you. I appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences with us, even though it was not as expected.

My sincere apologies for everything that has happened, while you were our guests, and for your early departure. I have shared your comments with our team and it is our hope that we will be given another chance at sharing the true Hawaiian experience with you sometime in the near future.

We rode our bikes to Hana from town and treated ourselves with an overnight stay at Travaasa. We were not disappointed. The Sea Ranch Cottage was spacious and had that open-air island quality. Bathroom was large with separate tub & walk-in shower. Amenities were great -- especially the local bars of soap. This is the first time I've had whole-bean coffee offered in the room with a coffee-grinder. Can't get any fresher than that. The ceramic coffee mugs and assortment of glasses were much appreciated. We loved the "adult" pool and jacuzzi, overlooking the ocean. Very serene location, and a pavilion for yoga/core exercise classes in the morning was a nice treat -- included in the price of the room. We loved our stay, our muscles were pampered and bodies rested before our ride back to town the next morning. Definitely worth a visit -- next time we'll plan 2 nights! :)

Room Tip: Definitely stay in the Sea Ranch cottages. Much better location than average rooms and very private.

Aloha makawaomaid,

Congratulations on your recent bike ride to Hana and Travaasa Hana! I drive that road quite often and can only imagine doing it by bike. The road to Hana is beautiful and one of a kind and by bike, I am sure you see it in a different light.

Yes, the Sea Ranch Cottages are very popular, relaxing, enjoyable and the amenities make it complete for a perfect stay. Just listening to the waves, makes for a soothing night’s sleep.
I have shared your Travaasa Hana experience with my team and we look forward to your return soon.

Warmest Aloha,

My wife and I stayed there a couple of weeks ago for three nights, and it was truly a magical place.

First, we couldn't imagine not staying in Hana after that very long (yet beautiful drive). It certainly helped break it up and you could take extra time if you wanted to knowing you didn't have to turn around afterwards.

In terms of a place for decompression and time to think, there is nothing better. There are no TVs or Internet in the room, in addition to no A/C as well. If you need any of those three, do not go. Nothing wrong with that, but this just wouldn't be the place for you.

The spa was gorgeous, and although I did not get anything, because my wife purchased a package I could stay there all day and enjoy the private jacuzzi, steam room, lockeroom, and cold bath plunge. Of note for men, please try the ice bath cycle: steam room for 6 minutes, plung into the cold bath, drink water, go back to steam room for 6 minutes, plunge in cold water again, drink water, than jacuzzi for 6 minutes, then cold shower. It is unbelievable.

The last thing I will say is that the people made this place magical. From the very start when they upgraded our stay free of charge due to under-occupancy, to telling us about their life and families, to always asking how are we are doing, it was done in such a way that felt less like a chore and more of an honest desire to know and please about their guests. The hotel can stand on its own, but the people are what drive the value and joy you will receive after staying.

Quick list of things to do: Thai restaurant less than a block away, hike to the 400 ft waterfall and 7 sacred pools, black sand beach, and natural fresh water caves.

Room Tip: Just call ahead and ask which are the best rooms for breezes. With no A/C, having a breeze at night is important.

Aloha Mark K,

Congratulations! You have survived the road to Hana. Your visit would not be complete without experiencing that drive, although the plane ride is very scenic too. Definitely, one day isn’t enough to enjoy your stay with us – too much to do.

Not having a/c, internet and television allows you to tune in to each other and to go out and enjoy the cool breeze and beautiful surroundings that Hana has to offer, and yes, it is not for everyone. For those that do enjoy it, they come back to Hana repeatedly and we hope that this will be the case for you. The staff, as well as the community, makes our guests experience most memorable.

I have shared your comments with my team and it is our hope that you will come back to visit us some time in the near future.

Warmest Aloha,

We only stayed a night but wish we had built in at least another day to take greater advantage of all they offer. Early morning yoga and core classes were great. They have a Wellness area where guests need to be 16 or older. The pool and amenities seemed nicer than the ones on the 'main campus'. In reading the reviews my sense is that the nicer rooms are on the wellness center side. We stayed in a room (#32) that was spacious but could have used some updating. Bedding wasn't very comfortable. Also, ask what they think about letting the sliders open in back of the room and only using the screen slides. The screen slider doesn't lock but it would have been cooler to use screens instead of just fans. The kids (teens) liked all there was to do. Hamona Beach was fabulous and so nice they lend out boards, chairs and towels without additional charge.

If you are looking for a large, crowded resort with Las Vegas style entertainment and shopping, do not go to Travaasa. If you want quiet, calm, serenity, beauty, relaxation, and outstanding service, this is your place.

My husband and I considered our time at Travaasa our "splurge," but considering all that is included, it really didn't end up costing much more than our big resort in Lahaina, where they charged extra for things like yoga classes and chairs on the beach. The experience in Hana is far superior (for us) as well--you feel like you're in your own private retreat since you are in a little cottage instead of a high rise. We splurged on an ocean-view sea cottage with a hot tub and felt like we'd gone to heaven. If you can do that, by all means, do. However, the views from the other side seemed good, too, and I can't imagine being unhappy anywhere on this property (if you are, you probably aren't meant to be here).

When you look at the restaurant menu prices, you might be put off initially. However, everything we ate on site was of outstanding quality, and their appetizers are large enough to make a meal for someone without a huge appetite. We did prefer the nearby food truck for breakfast, but otherwise we liked eating in the resort restaurants.

I thought the rooms were beautiful, so I don't know if they've been updated since previous reviews (some of the sea cottages were closed for renovations during our stay) or if that person just has bizarre expectations. The linens were of good quality. I do prefer a softer mattress but that is true in most hotels. I loved the robes in the room (although my husband's was a "shorty" robe on him), and drinking coffee out of your Travaasa mug on your patio breathing in the ocean air feels incredibly decadent.

I enjoyed all the activities we did and chatting with the staff, many of whom grew up in Hana.

This is really a special place. If we are lucky enough to return to Maui, we will spend all our time here.

Room Tip: Splurge on a sea ranch cottage if you can, but don't be put off by the reviews of other rooms. From reading them, I expected them to be in a high-rise style building. The entire resort is single-story and I can't imagine any of them are bad. We had 507 and loved it--it felt private while still having a beautiful view.
